LJUBLJANA T O W N T R A I L ART NOUVEAU ART NOUVEAU - ART RENOUVEAU 2014-2017 THERE ARE NO STRAIGHT LINES OR SHARP CORNERS IN NATURE. THEREFORE, BUILDINGS MUST HAVE NO STRAIGHT LINES OR SHARP CORNERS. ANTONIO GAUDI LJUBLJANA ART NOUVEAU The term »Secession Ljubljana« (the term »secession« in Slovenia is used after the example of the Vienna Secession) is a name for the neighbourhood between the old city centre and the main train station. This neighbourhood was mostly (re)built between the years of 1895 and 1910. It includes many important and well preserved architectural art works, but its pride is mostly in the richly decorated facades, which give it a special character. On Easter, the 14th of April 1895 Ljubljana, with 31,000 citizens and 1,400 buildings, was shaken by a very strong earthquake. About 10% of the buildings had to be demolished and all the rest were in need of a restoration. The city turned into a vivacious building site, in the next decade over 400 buildings were made, many were restored, electrical public lighting was introduced in the city and the sewage system was improved. A renaissance of the city began, that left important traces in the city centre all until today. MIKLOŠIČ SQUARE The square infront of the Judge Palace was first symbolically called the Slovenian square and was made by the plans of Maks Fabiani in 1900. The park was almost completely surrounded by buildings, built between the years 1900 and 1907 and represents the most beautiful Secession ambient in Ljubljana.

These goals play an important role in promoting social progress. The key characteristic of progressive cities should be their openness to the general public and equal accessibility for everyone regardless of their gender, race, age, or social status, and under the same conditions. Public buildings with their associated public spaces form an integral part of the city. For public buildings to be truly public these should follow the same principles as the open city. And it is architecture that has the power to design such truly public buildings. Unfortunately, Slovenia has not yet recognized that it could constitute itself as a modern state through the architecture of public buildings. Keywords: state, values of social progress, public building This article deals with the topical issues of the architecture of public buildings in Slovenia after 1991 viewed through the social values of progress. The introductory presentation of the issues and key terms (state, social values of progress, public building) is followed by an attempt to find the answer to the question which principles of the modern state should public buildings reflect and enforce, using the listed references (the primary reference being an essay by Richard Sennett entitled The Open City).

Razdelimo jih lahko v štiri kategorije: (1) preskrba – naravni viri, pitna voda, les itd., (2) regulacija – varstvo pred erozijo, poplavami, naravnimi katastrofami, (3) podpora – fotosinteza, proizvodnja kisika, vezava CO2, opraševanje rastlin in (4) kultura – vse možnosti sprostitve, navdiha in regeneracije, ki jih človek išče in najde v naravi. Prekomerno izkoriščanje naravnih ekosistemov prinaša ljudem višji standard, a zmanjšuje dolgoročno preživetje človeške populacije. Tak pristop utemeljujejo z dejstvom, da vsi ti podporni sistemi prispevajo neposredno in posredno k dobrobiti človeštva in so sestavni del ekonomske vrednosti našega planeta.

  • Slovenia Have Been Remarkable
Mrak/Rojec/Silva-Jáur lovenia’s achievements over the past several years Slovenia have been remarkable. Thirteen years after Public Disclosure Authorized independence from the former Socialist Federative egui Republic of Yugoslavia, the country is among the most advanced of all the transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe and a leading candidate for accession to the European Union Sin May 2004. Remarkably, however, very little has been published Slovenia documenting this historic transition. Fr om Y In the only book of its kind, the contributors—many of them the architects of Slovenia’s current transformation—analyze the country’s three-fold ugoslavia to the Eur transition from a socialist to a market economy, from a regionally based to a national economy, and from being a part of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia to being an independent state and a member of the European Union (EU). With chapters from Slovenia’s president, a former vice prime minister, Public Disclosure Authorized the current and previous ministers of finance, the minister of European affairs, the current and former governors of the Bank of Slovenia, as well as from leading development scholars in Slovenia and abroad, this unique opean Union collection synthesizes Slovenia’s recent socioeconomic and political history and assesses the challenges ahead. Contributors discuss the Slovenian style of socioeconomic transformation, analyze Slovenia’s quest for EU membership, and place Slovenia’s transition within the context of the broader transition process taking place in Central and Eastern Europe. Of interest to development practitioners and to students and scholars of the region, Slovenia: From Yugoslavia to the European Union is a From Yugoslavia comprehensive and illuminating study of one country’s path to political and economic independence.

Ob tem, ko boste pomagali tistim, ki pomoč potrebujejo, si boste nabirali različne izkušnje, spoznavali sebe in širili svoja obzorja, ustvarjali nova znanstva in prijateljstva. Vse zbrane aktivnosti so namenjene mladim prostovoljcem do 30. leta. Veseli bomo, če svoje izkušnje in dogodivščine ob prostovoljskem delu delite z nami in jih pošljete na elektronski naslov: [email protected]. Town Trail – Secession Ljubljana ART NOUVEAU – ART RENOUVEAU 2014–2017 Walk around Art Nouveau Ljubljana, observe buildings typical of this period and answer the questions. You can start your path anywhere you like, but make sure to walk the whole path and collect as many correct answers as possible. Estimated time of the task is 90 minutes. A SECESSION LJUBLJANA The term »Secession« in Slovenia is used following the example ! of the Vienna Secession (in other European countries the terms Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Modern Style, Liberty, etc. are also used as a name for this period), because in the Art Nouveau period, the Slovenian territory was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and numerous Slovenian artists and architects studied in Vienna. The term » Ljubljana Secession « is a name for the neighbourhood between the old city centre and the main railway station. This neighbourhood was mostly rebuilt between the years of 1895 and 1910. It includes many important and well preserved architectural masterpieces. Secession Ljubljana is one of the most recognisable parts of the city and that part of our cultural heritage which put Ljubljana alongside the biggest Art Nouveau capital cities, such as Brussels, Vienna, Paris, Barcelona. On Easter, 14th of April 1895 at 11.17pm CET time, Ljubljana, with ! its 31,000 citizens and 1,400 buildings, was shaken by a very strong earthquake (its aftershocks were existing all the way to Vienna in Austria, Split in Croatia and Florence in Italy). About 10% of the buildings had to be demolished and all the rest were in need of a restoration.

CHAPTER 5 JOŽE PLEČNIK, THE REGULATION OF LJUBLJANA – CLASSICAL MODERNISM 1928-1939 B W Davies Chapter 5 CHAPTER 5 Jože Plečnik, The Regulation of Ljubljana – Classical Modernism 1928-1939 The other major developments in architectural work and town and city planning in Central Europe are not to be found in the efforts of a large number of people but in the work of one man whose architectural oeuvre enriched firstly Prague and then Ljubljana. He was Jože Plečnik; Plečnik is the central figure in a forgotten chapter in the development of international modernism. The Slovene architect Jože Plečnik has become the central personality of a so far largely ignored development taking place behind the façade of functionalist slogans of theoreticians and prominent creative personalities of international modernism including Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto.1 Plečnik had for years remained largely unrecognised even though one of his works, Church of the Sacred Heart, first drawn in 1922 (5.1), arriving at a final design in 1927, dominates a square in Vinohrady, Prague – a robust building which can stand alone or be seen as a focus for Plečnik’s work especially in the inventiveness in the use of historical, regional and even local elements in new, original wholes, ranging from minute details, to major planning projects.2 Plečnik’s return to Slovenia from the Czechoslovak Republic was by no means certain for two reasons: in 1920 Plečnik was invited by Tomáš Mašaryk, President of the new Czechoslovak Republic, to be architect in chief in the remodelling and restoration of Hradcany (Prague Castle).
