  • Discrimination Between Eggs from Stink Bugs Species in Europe Using MALDI-TOF MS
insects Article Discrimination between Eggs from Stink Bugs Species in Europe Using MALDI-TOF MS Michael A. Reeve 1,* and Tim Haye 2 1 CABI, Bakeham Lane, Egham, Surrey TW20 9TY, UK 2 CABI, Rue des Grillons 1, CH-2800 Delémont, Switzerland; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Simple Summary: Recent globalization of trade and travel has led to the introduction of exotic insects into Europe, including the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys)—a highly polyphagous pest with more than 200 host plants, including many agricultural crops. Unfortunately, farmers and crop-protection advisers finding egg masses of stink bugs during crop scouting frequently struggle to identify correctly the species based on their egg masses, and easily confuse eggs of the invasive H. halys with those of other (native) species. To this end, we have investigated using matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for rapid, fieldwork-compatible, and low-reagent-cost discrimination between the eggs of native and exotic stink bugs. Abstract: In the current paper, we used a method based on stink bug egg-protein immobilization on filter paper by drying, followed by post-(storage and shipping) extraction in acidified acetonitrile containing matrix, to discriminate between nine different species using MALDI-TOF MS. We obtained 87 correct species-identifications in 87 blind tests using this method. With further processing of the unblinded data, the highest average Bruker score for each tested species was that of the cognate Citation: Reeve, M.A.; Haye, T. reference species, and the observed differences in average Bruker scores were generally large and the Discrimination between Eggs from errors small except for Capocoris fuscispinus, Dolycoris baccarum, and Graphosoma italicum, where the Stink Bugs Species in Europe Using average scores were lower and the errors higher relative to the remaining comparisons.

THE PHYTOPHAGOUS FAUNA OF GORSE (ULEX EUROPAEUS L.) AND HOST PLANT QUALITY RICHARD LAWRENCE HILL, M.Sc. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of London and for the Diploma of Imperial College HOUSED IN SILWOOD PARK LIBRARY Department of Pure & Applied Biology Imperial College Silwood Park Ascot Berkshire August 1982 2. ABSTRACT This study of the interactions between the fauna attacking gorse (Ulex europaeus L.) and their host-plant, was undertaken as part of a project aimed at the biological control of Ulex in New Zealand. In particular, the effects of seasonal changes in host-plant primary and secondary chemistry, plant structure and foliage morphology on the seasonal perform- ance of the phytophagous insect fauna were examined. Seasonal patterns of flowering and fruiting were described. Seasonal changes in foliage water content and toughness were summarised, and patterns of growth were described. These were discussed in relation to Lawton's (1978) living space concept and other current literature. Seasonal variation in the concentrations of 6 types of secondary compounds in the foliage were described. High concentrations of alkaloids may protect vegetative buds from herbivore attack in early spring, but otherwise foliage appeared to be unprotected. Energy content and soluble carbohydrate content of gorse foliage remained relatively high throughout the growing season. Foliage nitrogen content was high at bud-burst but declined within 6 weeks to a constant low level. The insect fauna associated with Ulex europaeus in Britain was described, compared and contrasted with the equivalent continental fauna and the faunas of related host-plants.

Halyomorpha halys has not established itself in Australia, but it has been intercepted several times at the border, therefore future incursions and establishment are likely. There are few control options for this species and biological control may be a useful management method in Australia. This study summarizes the literature on natural enemies of H. halys in its native and invaded ranges and prioritizes potential biological control agents that could be suitable for use in Australia. The results show two egg parasitoid species as the Citation: Caron, V.; Yonow, T.; Paull, best candidates: Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) and Trissolcus mitsukurii (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: C.; Talamas, E.J.; Avila, G.A.; Hoelmer, Scelionidae).
