  • Islamic Psychology
Islamic Psychology Islamic Psychology or ilm an-nafs (science of the soul) is an important introductory textbook drawing on the latest evidence in the sub-disciplines of psychology to provide a balanced and comprehensive view of human nature, behaviour and experience. Its foundation to develop theories about human nature is based upon the writings of the Qur’an, Sunnah, Muslim scholars and contemporary research findings. Synthesising contemporary empirical psychology and Islamic psychology, this book is holistic in both nature and process and includes the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of human behaviour and experience. Through a broad and comprehensive scope, the book addresses three main areas: Context, perspectives and the clinical applications of applied psychology from an Islamic approach. This book is a core text on Islamic psychology for undergraduate and postgraduate students and those undertaking continuing professional development courses in Islamic psychology, psychotherapy and counselling. Beyond this, it is also a good supporting resource for teachers and lecturers in this field. Dr G. Welcome to the Guest Editors When I first spoke to Lesley Klaff about the possibility of JSA hosting ESA conference papers, I was not exactly certain what was involved. For several years, ESA’s roster of paper presentations was top notch and often included key conceptualizations not found elsewhere. I wanted to make certain that some of the field’s best thinkers were receiving their due. JSA was located in North America, ESA was located in Europe and the gap needed to be bridged. My appreciation to Karin Stoegner and her team for their perseverance in making such fine work available to others. The papers have in common a distinct European flavor—they are nuanced and contextual driven. Except for David Patterson, the authors are European offering their perspective from what has become ground zero in displays of the new antisemitism. Europe is also ground zero for the old antisemitism and the context of the Holocaust affords certain insights that North Americans have yet to fully understand.

  • A Prismatic Inquiry Into Sweden's Anti-Muslim Movement
© COPYRIGHT by Elizabeth Pearce 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ALLAH IN VALHALLA: A PRISMATIC INQUIRY INTO SWEDEN’S ANTI-MUSLIM MOVEMENT BY Elizabeth Pearce ABSTRACT Violence and discrimination against Muslims and immigrants from countries with a Muslim majority is a pervasive problem that is becoming entrenched in Western societies. Sweden, often considered a bastion of peace and tolerance, is experiencing the escalation of violence against these populations coupled with a growing movement to institutionalize anti- Muslim sentiments through government policy. This study explores literatures across disciplines and perspectives across cleavages to analyze the issues and processes that contribute to violence and those that promote the peaceful resolution of Sweden’s conflict. Using a combination of methodological approaches, interviews were conducted with relevant actors to bolster the analysis by exploring the sources and drivers of conflict as individuals within the conflict context conceive them. Analysis of relevant government policies and programming is also included, with a conclusion that recommends enhancing the incorporation of established theories from the field of peace and conflict resolution in policy and social programs. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Throughout this project I had the honor of working with the incredible faculty and staff of the International Peace and Conflict Resolution program at the School of International Service who furnished me with the skills I needed to holistically approach this important topic. In particular, I would like to thank my thesis advisors, Lynn Kunkle and Shadi Mokhtari, for sharing with me their extensive knowledge and unending support throughout the various stages of my research. I must also extend the utmost gratitude to the individuals in Sweden who eagerly participated in interviews for this project, sharing their thoughts and feelings on some very sensitive issues for the benefit of the research.

A series of events such as the September 11 terrorist attacks against the US, the murder of Theo van Gogh in the Netherlands, the Madrid and London bombings and the debate on the Prophet Mohammed cartoons have given further prominence to the situation of Muslim communities. The central question is how to avoid stereotypical generalisations, how to reduce fear and how to strengthen cohesion in our diverse European societies while countering marginalisation and discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion or belief. European Muslims are a highly diverse mix of ethnicities, religious affiliation, philosophical beliefs, political persuasion, secular tendencies, languages and cultural traditions, constituting the second largest religious group of Europe’s multi-faith society.

  • ON the DYNAMICS of RADICAL-RIGHT PARTIES in EUROPE by Nicolas Dimitri Tewfik Bichay
FROM RISE TO RULE: ON THE DYNAMICS OF RADICAL-RIGHT PARTIES IN EUROPE By Nicolas Dimitri Tewfik Bichay A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Political Science|Doctor of Philosophy 2021 ABSTRACT FROM RISE TO RULE: ON THE DYNAMICS OF RADICAL-RIGHT PARTIES IN EUROPE By Nicolas Dimitri Tewfik Bichay Why have we seen such a dramatic rise of radical-right parties recently, and what have the consequences been? This dissertation traces the three main stages of the rising radical- right: first, how have they been succeeding in elections? Second, after winning election, why is their participation in government coalitions becoming more common? And third, what have the substantive effects of this government participation been on the quality and stability of liberal democracy? I begin by examining the dynamics of the radical-right's electoral success in relation to the rising trend of publicly funding electoral campaigns at the national level. While public financing is often thought of as a way to \level the playing field” of elections, I argue that such policies have had unintended second-order consequences by disproportionately aiding the rise radical-right parties. I further demonstrate that this public funding policy severs the tie of radical-right performance to economic growth. This is a counter-intuitive result, as public campaign finance is often considered a priority of the left to restore power to the majority, and yet, it seems to aid those on the right fringes of the political spectrum. Given this increased electoral success, chapter two investigates why these parties have found themselves in more and more governing coalitions recently.

  • Wellbeing of Transnational Muslim Families
Wellbeing of Transnational Muslim Families This book examines the needs, aspirations, strategies, and challenges of transnational Muslim migrants in Europe with regard to family practices such as marriage, divorce, and parenting. Critically re-conceptualizing ‘wellbeing’ and unpacking its multiple dimensions in the context of Muslim families, it investigates how migrants make sense of and draw on different norms, laws, and regimes of knowledge as they navigate different aspects of family rela- tions and life in a transnational social space. With attention to issues such as registration of marriage, civil versus religious marriage, spousal roles and rights, polygamy, parenting, child wellbeing, and everyday security, the authors offer national and comparative case studies of Muslim families from different parts of the world, covering different family bonds and relations, within both extended and nuclear families. Based on empirical research in the Nordic region and further afield, this volume affords a more complete understanding of the practices of transna- tional migrant families, as well as the processes through which family rela- tions and rights are negotiated between family members and with state institutions and laws, whilst contributing to the growing literature on migrant wellbeing. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and social policy with interests in migration and transnational communities, wellbeing, and the family. Marja Tiilikainen (PhD, Docent) is Senior Researcher at the Migration Institute of Finland.
