The study is based on interviews conducted with twenty-eight Somalis, ten Swedish officials and a focus group interview involving eight other Somalis. The thesis examines respondents’ views about their experiences and perceptions relating to the ‘integration’ of Somalis into Swedish society. The study explores how Somali refugees in Sweden orientate themselves to the prevailing Swedish system of integration. It also aims to identify some of the key factors that impinge upon their (Somalis) socioeconomic and cultural integration into Swedish society. The study reveals that there are a n umber of ‘integrative dilemmas’ confronting Somali refugees in Sweden. These include widespread unemployment; ‘unsuitable’ education; residential segregation; and, institutional discrimination – notably, in the labour market and housing sectors. The study links the inability of Somalis to ‘settle in’ within Swedish society to their ‘divergence’ from the prevailing ‘norms’, particularly in relation to ‘culture’ and ‘religion’. These ‘differences’ reflect the intensity that Somalis attach to family bonds, patriarchal gender role/patterns and their adherence to Islam (the religion most Somalis adhere to). Although there have been a number of investigations concerning immigrant integration in Sweden, this is one of the few detailed in-depth qualitative studies on Somali refugees in Sweden. This research concludes with a number of recommendations and suggestions which may assist with the smooth transition of Somalis refugees into Swedish society. Summary Summary The conflict in Syria and Iraq has resulted in an increase in the number of violent Islamist extremists in Sweden, and a significant increase of people from Sweden travelling to join terrorist groups abroad. Since 2012 it is estimated that about 300 people from Sweden have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join terrorist groups such as the Islamic State (IS) and, to a lesser extent, al-Qaeda affiliated groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra. Even though the foreign fighter issue has been on the political agenda for several years and received considerable media attention, very little is known about the Swedish contingent.

    SWEDEN 2020 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution protects “the freedom to practice one’s religion alone or in the company of others” and prohibits discrimination based on religion. In March, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) declined to hear the case of two midwives who said the regional hospitals, and by extension the state, had infringed on their religious beliefs and freedom of choice by denying them employment due to their opposition to abortion, which is legal in the country. In September, the Malmo Administrative Court overturned the Bromolla Municipality’s ban on prayer during working hours. In November, the Malmo Administrative Court overturned the ban on hijabs, burqas, niqabs, and other face- and hair-covering garments for students and employees in preschools and elementary schools introduced by Skurup and Staffanstorp Municipalities. In January, a government inquiry proposed a ban on the establishment of new independent religious schools, beginning in 2023, and increased oversight on existing schools having a religious orientation. The Migration Agency’s annual report, released in February, reported large regional variations in the assessment of asylum cases of Christian converts from the Middle East and elsewhere. Some politicians from the Sweden Democrats, the country’s third largest political party, made denigrating comments about Jews and Muslims. Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and other politicians condemned anti-Semitism and religious intolerance. The Prime Minister announced his country’s endorsement of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, including its list of examples of anti- Semitism. The government continued funding programs aimed at combating racism and anti-Semitism and reducing hate crimes, including those motivated by religion.

    ARNE FORSMAN TO BECOME SOMEBODY YOU HAVE TO LEARN SWEDISH Somali Children in Sweden This chapter explores the experiences of school among Somali students who attend an independent Muslim School in Sweden. SOMALIS IN SWEDEN Sweden has a population of around ten million people and because approximately ten percent are born overseas, it is now seen as a multi-cultural society. In comparison to other countries in Europe, Sweden accepts the most refugees in relation to its total population. Officially and politically, migrants are considered to be an invaluable resource for the development of Swedish society, both culturally and financially. Historically, migrants have made a great contribution to the Swedish labour market and without their contribution the welfare system in Sweden would not be as strong as it is today. Today, however, there are a significantly higher number of unemployed people among non-native citizens in Sweden. For many years, questions concerning migration and integration have been frequently debated in the political arena. As a result the sustainability and reliability of the government’s immigration and refugee policy has been questioned. The Swedish government has been severely criticised by the United Nations and the European Union over the deportation of people searching for sanctuary and asylum in Sweden. A long history of war and political instability has forced many Somalis to flee their country. The Somali population in Sweden is approximately 70,000 persons. Approximately 35,000 refugees have arrived in Sweden since the 1980s as they flee from war and terror in their native country. Many of these Somali refugees have acquired Swedish citizenship and others have, or are waiting for, a permanent residence permit with probably an unknown number remaining in the country illegally (SCB, 2006).

    Mental Health Problems and Healing among Somalis in Sweden* Johan Wedel I. Introduction Refugees are particularly at risk of mental health problems and they often have special needs that must be met if integration into the new country is to succeed.1 However, there is a lack of research that focuses on the refugees’ own perceptions and ideas about mental health.2 One of the largest refugee populations worldwide is the Somalis. It is esti- mated that more than a million have fled their country because of the civil war.3 Many Somalis in the diaspora experience anxiety, marginal- ization, and mental health problems. At the same time, few make use of biomedical health services when suffering. Moreover, there exists a certain mistrust of the biomedical health sector.4 In addition, many Somalis turn to non-Western healing practices when suffering from episodes of ill health.5 Somalis in the diaspora have depression and anxiety related to war, the loss of family members, and afflicting spirits known as jinni or jinn.6 This essay examines ideas and experiences of mental health prob- lems among Somali refugees in Sweden. It explores these issues from an anthropological perspective by emphasizing people’s own words about illness, healing, and well-being. In so doing, the article adds to the knowledge about how Somalis in the diaspora conceptualize and respond to mental illness. 73 Bildhaan Vol. 11 II.     A view from the wharf: historical perspectives on the transformation of urban waterfront space in Stockholm during the twentieth century Natasha Vall Abstract This article examines the development of Hammarby Lake City in southern Stockholm on a former industrial, waterfront site during the 1990s. The setting may resemble global redevelopments of urban waterfronts and docks; however, Stockholm needs to be viewed against longer cultural, aesthetic and historical influences. This includes early twentieth- century precedents rooted in civic and residential engagement with the modern and industrial shoreline. In addition, an informal human interaction with the abandoned southern Hammarby harbour evolved during the 1950s through reoccupation by an itinerant community of workers. Such forerunners have often been overlooked in dominant accounts of a late twentieth century dramatic transformation of industrial waterfronts. The article concludes that there is scope to align the theme of waterfront development more closely to the longer history of the twentieth century city. This perspective provides a useful counterpoint to the leading view of such spaces as an expression of late capitalism. 1 Stockholm has a notable vista of waterfront buildings from the early modern mercantile of Gamla Stan, the stylish modernism of Kungsholmen to the twenty first century exuberance of Hammarby Lake City. Stockholm’s old southern harbour, the rehabilitated site for ‘Hammarby Lake City’ boasts lakeshore apartments, waterside dwellings and public spaces. With vistas continually framed by water, sometimes still, sometimes moving, these have been carefully planned to draw the gaze towards the open water and the extending horizon.1 A few decades earlier we would have had a different experience.
