Barcelona Sangria Afternoon Special Barcelona Sangria house made favorites-by the glass & carafe The history of Sangria is varied but it has its humble beginnings in Spain. The word sangria comes from the Spanish word “sangre”, which means blood. Sangria is a wine punch typically made with red wine, fresh tropical fruits, a sweetener and added alcoholic spirits served over ice. This concoction has grown to become a popular, refreshing party drink around the world. Every restaurant has its own recipe and everyone that makes it at home has their own opinions about what should be added to Sangria. The variations on the basic sangria recipe are only limited by what you want to add and what you enjoy. Although typically made from red wine, white wine can also be used and then it is called ‘Sangria Blanco’. The Cava producing region of Spain added its own variation to sangria by adding their sparkling wine, Cava. In the south of Spain, zurra is sangria created with peaches or nectarines. Because of the variations in recipes, sangria’s alcoholic content can vary greatly.

  • Ribera Del Duero
VINEYARDS OF THE WORLD Ribera del Duero ASTILLA Y LEÓN (usually known as Castile in English) is the largest autonomous region in Spain, C occupying one fifth of the total area—but it is rel- atively sparsely populated. With its rolling terrain and the occasional plateau, mostly used for production of grain crops and sheep grazing, Castile has many similarities with the Australian landscape. There are five Denominación de Origen (DO) wine regions in Castile, namely Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Bierzo, Toro and Cigalas. Ribera del Duero is located in the upper valley of the River Duero which is perhaps better known by its Portugese name, the Douro. The name Ribera del Duero literally means the banks of the river Duero. The region was only awarded DO status in 1982 even though the famous estate of Vega Sicilia (located near Valbuena de Duero at the western end of the region) has been known for its high qual- ity wines since the mid 19th century. Significant expansion in both vineyard area and the number of wine estates has occurred since the late 1980s, and today this DO is challeng- ing the dominance of Rioja in the Spanish red wine market. At present there are 15,000 ha of vineyards but the average PETER DRY vineyard size is less than 1 ha. In the past, most of the fruit ended up in cooperatives for the production of cheap rosé. Now there are more than 50 wine estates with an emphasis on Vineyards of the World quality red wine production. The oldest vineyards are found in the west of the region near Peñafiel but much of the new development is in the east near Aranda de Duero.

The voting occurs ~1 year after the vintage with the young wines already having seen ~12 months in oak barrels. Barrels were donated by Demptos, Radoux, Quercus and Cadus. Pro- ceeds of the sale of the wine will be contributed to the construction of a sub-terranean winery and support for a small community in Northern Kenya. The community has 300 fruit trees and 3600 grape vines planted of Syrah, Garnacha, Alicante and Moscatel. The wine is made all from fruit from the 2007 vintage but is not allowed to be labeled as a vintage wine given its Vino de Mesa designation.

Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier. This thesis-guide was compiled through the research of the various Denominaciones de Origen of Spain, the history of Spain, the regions of Spain and their individual histories and cultures, and, of course, the many, many wines of Spain.
