Most rolling stock continues to be bogie cars, delivered during the Soviet era up to 1987; the great majority are of the more modern three-door layout but a handful of two-door cars, dating back to 1973, remain in traffic. In the first part of this century, some of these cars were subject to a complete rebuild within the works at and appeared in a variant of the standard red/cream livery, with black trim and a recessed front panel beneath the windscreen. Most have since been repainted into standard livery. Darnytsia works has also rebuilt two sets of T3 cars into three-section articulated units, one for use on the west bank express tramway and the other for the Kryvyi Rih express tramway. Subsequent similar reconstructions were built at KZET (a big workshop that produced both trams and trolleybuses, now located within Podilske depot). These 14 west bank cars (401-414) are designated K3R-N, feature low-floor centre sections by Pars nova and are painted in the Ukrainian national colours of yellow and blue, though some still sport motifs advertising the 2012 European football championship. These cars are designated K3R-N (or KT3-UA by Pars nova, which supplied the technology). Over 100 cars (known as T3M in the former Soviet bloc) arrived between 1985 and 1991 and the survivors may be found in operation on all routes of the network on both sides of the river. In addition, the two Tatra-Yug T6B5 units 100/1 delivered in 1994 work from Darnytsia depot. Purpose-built low-floor cars have also been added to the fleet. Car 500 was the prototypeK1M8 three-section car built at Dnipropetrovsk as a variant to the standard K1 bogie car, of which Kyiv has taken nine and others have joined other Ukrainian fleets. In addition, three similar bogie cars with low-floor centre sections (341-3), typeK1M, joined the fleet in 2012 and operate in two-car sets with a conventional K1 bogie car as trailer. Three production cars similar to 500 have since been added to the fleet (501-3) and all operate on the west bank express lines. The prototype Skt-Peterburg built 71-154M articulated car 450 is also numbered amongst this fleet. There are seven so-called 'Chestnut' rebuilds of Tatra T3 cars for use on the express tramways; these T3UA-3 cars are to be found on the east bank route (600-5) and appear in an ivory livery with red relief, whilst a sole car (750) is on the west bank network. More on the Metrolink decision to develop a high-floor tramway

How amazing is was to see in the Mailbox in December 2013 (TAUT 912) that two readers should make the very same comments that I made to Clive Pennington, the Head of Engineering, Metrolink RATP Dev, at the 2013 LRTA AGM in Rochdale, after he had given us a presentation on Metrolink. His answer then was that if they had used available funds to convert from high-floor to low-floor, the money spent would probably have resulted in not having sufficient funds for all the routes that they have built or are still constructing. I did not find this explanation convincing. Many years ago, shortly after Sheffield Supertram opened, Lewis Lesley said to me that Manchester should sell off its high-floor cars whilst it had the opportunity, and replace them with low-floor vehicles. Shortly after this comment, Manchester began construction of the Eccles route, mainly on new alignment with plenty of street running, Again, more high-floor cars were ordered from the original manufacturer. Manchester missed the golden opportunity then to build a low-floor route with low-floor cars, as Midland Metro and Croydon were then doing. A few years ago they started buying new cars. They opted The single direction only Mosley Street Metrolink stop in the week of its for high-floor again. Then they announced their intention to closure in May 2013. It was removed from the system to reduce delays: two replace all the original Firema cars with the new Bombardier nearby stops absorbed the role. Neil Pulling high-floor cars. What a great pity they did not replace all these cars in the 1990s and go low-floor then. “When Manchester's light rail system I am convinced that Manchester has made the wrong decision in retaining high-floor cars, whilst the rest of the was first planned [in 1983] , low-floor world (except USA) has gone low-floor. Peter Jackson, Liverpool (UK) trams did not exist!”

In his letter (TAUT 912, page 530), Paul Fletcher is worried or alighting at the first or fourth door of the leading unit had about Manchester Metrolink being a high-floor system. a single step from a slightly sloping platform. 34 / JANUARY 2014 www.tramnews.net . www.lrta.org Clarifications on energy storage In reply to Mr Tuddenham’s letter in the last issue, thank you for asking for clarification on items where we may have not been sufficiently clear within our article Next-generation energy storage systems (TAUT 910). During regenerative braking, the voltage rises and usually some resistors are connected at 900v for a 750v nominal system, limiting the voltage to such value. The BESS450 is designed for a maximum power of 900v and 500A, that is why the rated power is 450kW. It is correct that the onboard resistors remain in the vehicle, since we don’t perform any modification here, but they will not be used whenever the system is able to absorb the energy. In new railway systems the capacity of onboard resistors can be reduced and the wayside resistor perhaps even eliminated. You are correct that the primary function of L2 is to store energy in both buck and boost modes, but its value also determines Light rail development in Australia is gathering pace, with the Gold Coast project set to transform the city when the ripple on the current being stored. it opens in 2014. It provided BOGESTRA’s first shift contribution to special service 120 and is seen here in Essen taking the curve from Herkulesstrasse into Steeler Strasse en route to the terminus at Knappschafts-Krankenhaus.

2 Justifiable interest is evoked in this display of veteran and vintage rolling stock from lost Ruhrgebiet tramways. Former Vestische Strassenbahn 144 of 1921 is flanked on each side by members of Oberhausen’s first tramway installation: on the left, 25 of 1900, whilst three-axle Westwaggon car 322 dates from 1957 and was acquired by Mülheim-an-der-Ruhr before the Oberhausen closure in 1968.

3 Mülheim-an-der-Ruhr Düwag Grossraumwagen 227, a type long associated with this undertaking; it is seen 2 emerging from beneath the mainline railway bridges that span Steeler Strasse, on its way to Abzweig Katernberg by way of the depot-connection tracks in Herkulesstrasse and Goldschmidt Strasse.

4 Essen’s Aufbau car 888 worked three journeys between Stadtmitte depot and Bahnhof Altenessen, terminal of one of the two original 1893 routes, between Seumannstrasse and Altenessen following the route of that pioneer line. Here it approaches Altenessen 3 4 terminus, the northern limit of Essen’s metre-gauge network.

5 Mülheim-an-der-Ruhr 259 is a Düwag six-axle articulated car built in 1960 but rebuilt in 1994 to an unusual configuration with doors on both sides. Seen alongside are (from left) Essen 705, a ‘two-rooms-and-a-bath’ car of 1959, and Bochum- Gelsenkirchen 40, a double- ended Düwag six-axle car of 1968.

7 Forbidding is perhaps the best description of crane car 610, built in 1928. It is attached to flat-wagon 728.

8 Essen’s own Düwag Grossraumwagen driving school car was originally passenger car 524. In 1964 it was rebuilt to double-ended configuration for training duties and took its present fleet number, 640, in 1980.

A detailed description of all the tram routes and the wide variety of rolling stock used, along with numerous maps and previously-unpublished pictures, makes this a ‘must have’. Sarajevo – Trams and Trolleybuses By Jan Čihák This first comprehensive work on the subject describes the development of the tramways and trolleybuses in the Bosnian capital, from the opening of a 760mm gauge horse tramway in 1885 which was electrified ten years later.
