Escape the Madrid Heat in the Mountains of Cercedilla As someone who considers themselves a 50/50 city girl and mountain lover, I was slightly curious when moving to Madrid about where the hiking enthusiast side of me would find a place in such a massive city. I find that when most people think of Spain, their minds tend to veer more towards flamenco, sangria, paella, medieval villages, and enchanting cities. To my surprise, the community of Madrid is also home to a vast range of world-class hiking trails. I was excited the other week to be escaping the city for a day in the mountains of Cercedilla, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw the immense beauty that La Sierra de Guadarrama beholds. Getting to Cercedilla Luckily, Cercedilla is only about a one-hour drive away from Madrid and can be easily reached by train, which will drop you off right in the center of the quaint mountain town. I took a car to Cercedilla and after driving through this charming destination for a bit, found my way to the environmental office. Stepping out of the car and getting a whiff of the crisp mountain air and pine trees was the perfect welcome into the gorgeous La Sierra de Guadarrama that surrounds Madrid. If you go up to the window at the environmental office, you will meet a guide who will provide you with plenty of information and maps on the hikes that the area boasts. Choosing Your Hike The guide at the environmental office explained the map that contains many different color-coded trails, informing us of how long each would take, what the difficulty level was, etc. -

Specifically, 1,204,000 is approximately the number of boardings per contract area a winter's day in Stockholm. Since the capacity and frequency of the metro service are already quite good in this city, this thesis does not focus on improve that. Its aim is to know the assessment made by metro users of the crowding produced during rush hour. This evaluation is performed by two questionnaires, one shorter that is carried out on board and one longer, online. But before starting with the surveys, this work introduces some general information about public transport in Stockholm and it distinguishes capacity and crowding concepts. Any human behavior begins with the attitudes and perceptions that people show to any particular aspect, from which and through their preferences, they define their behavior acting in one way or another. And once they have made their decision and have chosen to use a service, they will be able to evaluate it by their satisfaction level. -

Perspectiva tras 90 años de construcción en el Metro de Madrid JESÚS M. TRABADA GUIJARRO (*) y RAÚL TALAVERA MANSO (**) RESUMEN En 2009 el Metro de Madrid cumplió 90 años de servicio. En esos 90 años la red ha crecido desde los 3,5 km del primer tramo de la línea 1 hasta superar los 300 km. El crecimiento de la red se ha ido adaptando a la situación política y económica del país, así como a la tecnología de construcción subterránea disponible en cada momento. El artículo repasa los métodos constructivos empleados en Metro de Madrid, analizando los puntos fuertes y débiles de cada uno de ellos. PERSPECTIVE AFTER 90 YEARS OF PROGRESS IN METRO DE MADRID ABSTRACT In 2009 Madrid Metro turned 90 years of service. In those 90 years, the network has grown from 3,5km of the first section of Line 1 to exceed 300km. The growth of the network has been adapted to the political and economic situation of the country, as well as the underground construction technology available in each moment. She began trips from Hastings Pier in May 1885, the year this picture was painted, taking up to 360 passengers at a time. A Painting of Steamship Carrick Castle with Hastings Pier in background. By George Mears, 1885. This Painting is in Hastings Museum. Not all the ships that worked from Hastings Pier were paddle steamers. This is the Lady Brassey at the landing stage on eastern side of the Pier. She was built in 1886 in Newcastle for the Hastings and St Leonards Passenger Steamship Co, could carry 372 passengers, and had two steam driven propellers at the rear. But she didn’t last long because in 1890 she was sold on to Amazon Steamship Co Ltd in Paraguay. The Lady Brassey moored at Hastings Pier head. (HPC006.128) www.hastingspier.org.uk 2 Paddle steamers were the preferred craft because they could operate in shallow water, were highly manoeuvrable, and so were ideal for running the seaside excursions from piers which had become very popular by the 1880s. Between 1886 and 1890 the landing stages at Hastings Pier were extended twice, on the eastern and southern sides, so that up to four vessels could be moored at a time. The Lady Brassey was replaced by the Seagull, which was really a steam tug with a passenger certificate. -

Foreword from the head of Moscow Metro 3 Events of the year 4 Performance indicators 20 Metro staff 30 Development and technical upgrade 44 Safety and security 50 International activity 56 Future development 62 1 The year 2012 can certainly be described as a year of great accomplishments, including the opening of new stations, reconstruction of existing facilities and metro technical systems. This year we have introduced a new section “Novogireevo” – “Novokosino” on the Kalininskaya line”, that allows now quick, convenient and reliable mode of transport to be provided to almost 200,000 inhabitants of the district. Besides, the metro map shows the long-awaited station ”Alma-Atinskaya” on the Zamoskvoretskaya line and the station “Pyatnitskoye shosse” in the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Foreword from the head line. The future of Moscow transport system is unthinkable without development of the metro, which plays a key role in the city’s public transport of Moscow Metro system. The Moscow Metro management carries out all the changes planned and appointed by the Moscow Government by paying as much attention to the demand of Muscovites and guests of the capital as possible. By 2020, 67 new stations are planned to be constructed. At present, we prioritize the construction of the Exterior interchange circuit line with the phased commissioning of line sections, the extension of the Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya line from station “Maryina roshcha” to the northern areas of the city by 2015. Also the construction of the new Kozhukhovskaya line from the station “Aviamotornaya” to the station “Nekrasovka. By 2017, the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya line will be formed and operated between the station “Novokosino” and the districts, Solntsevo and Novo-Peredelkino. -

At its most recent general assembly, held in Madrid, Spain, in December 2000, ALAMYS set up several technical committees to improve its operational efficiency so that it can progress as an organization and achieve its goals. This article was written by Aurelio Rojo Garrido, [email protected], current secretary general of ALAMYS and operations manager of Metro de Madrid, S.A. ALAMYS: A 15-YEAR RECORD ALAMYS was established (initially under the name of Latin American Committee for Metros and Subways, CLM) at a founding seminar held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1986, in response to the need to share concerns and experiences in this sector. Following the precedent and example of other international organizations, and in view of the shared interests of the founding countries, a pact was signed on 14 October 1987 for the purpose of going even further in recognizing the member states’ affinities in terms of both technical specifications and geography. As a result of that pact, the first meeting was held in Caracas, Venezuela, to officially establish ALAMYS. -

It was most successful. The accommodation and main centre were typical 1960s college space and served us well even INDUSTRIAL though the lecture room struggled to accommodate the numbers. The village was a delight – the ARCHAEOLOGY gardens of Cannington Court (now part of the college) were open to us and there were no less than five pubs to explore. The Conference Dinner was outside the capacity of the College so to Taunton Race NEWS 191 Course we went (regrettably not on a race night) and were served an excellent meal and at which the Winter 2019 AIA prizes were handed out (see page 19). The organization was faultless, well planned and well executed by members of the Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society led by Peter Daniel and Steve Miles. Steve established a precedent by Honorary President Prof Marilyn Palmer MBE bringing along his tribe in support – and support they did. Peter was also responsible for editing and leading the team that produced a revised version of the Somerset Gazetteer. Honorary Vice Presidents As usual John McGuiness had done a superb job as Conference Secretary and Steve Miles had Prof Angus Buchanan, Sir Neil Cossons OBE, Prof John Hume handled the bookings impeccably. -
