Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. -

Os oito primeiros clubes da classificação são os quatro ‘grandes’ do Rio de Janeiro e de São Paulo. Os mineiros Atlético e Cruzeiro completam os ‘dez mais’. O Grêmio de Porto Alegre é o único clube dos doze ‘grandes’ que não possui nenhum atleta goleador no escrete canarinho, mas, em contrapartida, os atletas da Portuguesa de Desportos, do Bangu e do São Cristóvão assinaram seis honrosos gols no conjunto. Both the Chinese and the Greeks, before the Christian era, as well as the Florentines during the Renaissance, played games based on moving a sphere with their feet. Tsu-chu in China, Kemari, in Japan, Epyskiros, in Greece, and Harpastrum, in the Roman Empire, are some of the names of rudimentary forms of the game that became known as football. Developed by the English starting in the 12th century, it was only in the first half of the 19th century that football acquired a set of rules, seeking to differentiate it from rugby, another very popular sport in British schools. In 1863, the Football Association was created, consolidating the rules and organizing the first games and tournaments of the new sport. -

COPA DO MUNDO DE 1950: a criação de uma cultura da desculpa Miguel Archanjo de Freitas Jr1 INTRODUÇÃO O objetivo do presente estudo é demonstrar as estratégias discursivas utilizadas por alguns cronistas de um dos principais jornais esportivos brasileiro, para tentar justificar a derrota sofrida pelo selecionado nacional de futebol na final da Copa do Mundo de 1950. Este resultado adverso fez com que o desejo de vitória expresso antecipadamente por estes literatos não fosse concretizado e na busca de tentar diminuir a frustração nacional, inúmeras justificativas foram apresentadas, criando uma verdadeira “Cultura da Desculpa”. Tal cultura auxiliou para que os cronistas tentassem influenciar os sentimentos dos torcedores, ora trabalhando com o medo, ora com a expectativa, com a confiança no futuro e em alguns momentos com o resgate de pontos positivos, mesmo diante de situações adversas, como na derrota em pleno Maracanã, diante dos olhos de 200 mil pessoas. Esta derrota aconteceu em um momento no qual o governo brasileiro aproveitava a possibilidade de obtenção de recursos financeiros que eram canalizados para o país, em decorrência de um projeto de expansão do capital internacional pós II Guerra Mundial. Naquele momento o Brasil via a possibilidade de colocar em prática o seu projeto desenvolvimentista, que tinha na industrialização a principal estratégia para superar o subdesenvolvimento. 2 Tal situação criava um clima de otimismo no país, tendo as suas expectativas voltadas para o futuro. Um futuro que era descrito pelos cronistas esportivos como sendo um momento promissor, onde a vitória na Copa do Mundo de 1950 apresentava a possibilidade de mostrar para o restante do mundo a potencialidade brasileira. -
