The preface to the second English edition indicates the important additions to, and changes which have been made in, the original work. The portrait of the wealthy freedman, lounging in his deluxe octaphoros (litter carried by eight imported slaves), is one which appears repeatedly, taking shape in the late Republic and reaching a climax of frequency in the satires of Juvenal and the epigrams of Martial, in the late first century CE. While by this stage the conveyance undeniably functions as a satirical symbol, the origins and constructedness of its role as such have been surprisingly under-examined by modern scholars. In order to excavate the litter’s developing identity, I first unravel Roman accounts of the vehicle’s origins. The lectica was repeatedly framed by Roman authors such as Cicero as an exotic import from the near east (Bithynia, in particular), only available to Romans upon their exposure, through the process of imperial expansion, to eastern softness. However, such a projection involved carefully distinguishing this “decadent” litter from already existing, sanctioned litter use: thus the lectica also encompasses a category closer to our “stretcher.” Indeed, the litter’s status as a newfangled import is belied by coexisting narratives of republican-era patriarchs riding in the lectica, usually because of injury, old age, or disability. -

Thanks are due to Andrew Banchich and Christopher Filkins for their assistance with a range of technical matters and to Ryan Post, who read and commented on drafts of the translation. ii INTRODUCTION In the spring of 2007, I suggested to four students—Sarah Brill, Emilyn Haremza, Dustin Hummel, and Ryan Post—the preparation of an English translation of ΠΕΡΙ ΠΟΤΑΜΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΟΡΩΝ ΕΠΩΝΥΜΙΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΩΝ ΕΝ ΑΥΤΟΙΣ ΕΥΡΙΣΚΟΜΕΝΩΝ, better known, when known at all, by its abbreviated Latin title, De fluviis, About Rivers. Their resultant rough version of a portion of About Rivers, in turn, provided the impetus for the translation presented here. However, while the students worked from Estéban Calderón Dorda’s text in the Corpus Plutarchi Moralium series, for reasons of copyright, I have employed what was the standard edition prior to Dorda’s, that of Rudolph Hercher.1 Only the ninth-century codex Palatinus gr. -

Henry Peacham, Ripa' s Iconologia, and Vasari's Lives A.R. YOUNG The first illustrated edition of Cesare Ripa' s Iconologia (Rome, 1603) had an early influence in England upon triumphal pageants and masques. Ripa's extremely popular alphabetized handbook was designed to assist poets, painters, sculptors and others who wished to portray personifications of virtues and vices, and human sentiments and passions, and, as has been recognized for some time, Ben Jonson made early use of it in The King's Entertainment in Passing to His Coronation (15 March 1603-04), and, in collaboration with Inigo Jones, he used it in Hymenaei (1606), in The Masque ofBeauty ( 1 608), in The Masque ofQueens ( 1 609) and in subse- quent works of the kind.* Also well-known is the fact that another English poet and artist, Henry Peacham, consulted the Iconologia while compil- ing his emblem collection M/w^rva Britanna (1612),^ and, as Rosemary Freeman pointed out in her English Emblem Books, as many as fifteen emblems in Minerva Britanna are adaptations of sections of Ripa's book. In his emblem book Peacham only acknowledges his debt to Ripa in three of the fifteen instances,^ but in his treatise The Gentleman's Exercise, which was published later in the same year,'* Peacham seems to have gone out of his way to remain silent concerning his far more considerable debt to the Italian iconologist. It is the nature and hnportance of this debt that I should now like to consider. Peacham's The Gentleman 's Exercise was a much-expanded and revised version of his earlier handbook for would-be gentleman artists. -
