Куту- зову. Пока неясно, как «Кутузовская» икона попала к М.Ф. Кашталинскому [Тимо- феев, 2015, 282–283]. Исследователи отмечают, что «Кутузовская» икона представляет несомнен- ный интерес и с иконографической точки зрения. В частности, Я.Р. Бибарцева ука- зывает, что данная икона является «настоящей революцией в истории иконописи» [Тайна, http://www.smolnews.ru/news/182299]. В.Г. Пуцко называет «Кутузовскую» икону «исключением», исследователь отмечает, что икона представляет собой «ико- нописную вариацию гравюрной композиции» XVIII века. В.Г. Пуцко приводит несколько примеров похожих произведений, например, икона Нила Столбенско- го (1774 год). Художественный стиль иконы исследователь сравнивает со стилем В.Л. Боровиковского (1757–1825 гг.), который в академической живописной манере писал иконы и портреты. В.Г. Пуцко отмечает, что смоленский иконописец «нахо- дился под явным воздействием В.Л. Боровиковского и, может быть, даже отчасти использовал его произведения в качестве моделей». В.Г. Пуцко усматривает сход- ство даже в позах и жестах персонажей, изображённых на иконах [Пуцко, 2000]. Сотрудники Смоленского государственного музея-заповедника также обращают наше внимание на точность прорисовки деталей в нижней части иконы. Мы можем увидеть такие смоленские достопримечательности как Вознесенский монастырь, Нижне-Никольскую церковь, Успенский собор, надвратную церковь Богоматери. Подробно изображена и крепостная стена, окружающая город, а также проломы в ней, появившиеся в 1812 году в результате боя за Смоленск [«Кутузовская икона», http://www.smolensk-museum.ru/novosti/muzeynaya_zhizn/k-130-letiyu-smolenskogo- gosudarstvennogo-muzeya-zapovednika-art-i-e-fakty-130-let-predmetnoj-istorii/]. Таким образом, «Кутузовская икона» была создана в Смоленске зимой 1812–1813 годов по заказу местных жителей в благодар- ность М.И. Кутузову за освобождение Смолен- ска. В качестве основы была взята почитаемая икона Смоленской Божьей Матери и, скорее всего, гравюры с изображением Смоленска. По- дарить икону М.И. Кутузову смоляне не успе- ли вследствие его скоропостижной кончины. К нашему времени сохранилось четыре списка «Кутузовской» иконы – в Смоленске, Санкт- Петербурге, Гомеле и Москве. Местонахожде- ние ещё одного списка, вологодского (который, скорее всего, и был оригиналом иконы), неиз- вестно. Первые три из перечисленных списков практически полностью идентичны, московский список отличается и размером, и примитивной манерой письма. Teryukova State Museum of the History of Religion 14 Pochtamtskaya St., St. Petersburg, Russia, 190000 [email protected] Central Anti-Religious Museum in Moscow: Historical Landmarks (1929–1947) Abstract. The study focuses on the activities of the Central Anti-Religious Museum (CAM) in Moscow – an issue previously overlooked by historians. The article considers different aspects of its work during the brief period from 1929 to 1947 relating to the establishment and closure of the museum as well as provides an overview of the key areas of its collection, expedition, research and exhibition work. The article also follows the development of the CAM’s highly skilled research team that investigated rudimentary religious practices of ethnicities inhabiting the USSR and the gradual disappearance of these practices. The growing research potential of the CAM and the museum’s evolution from a propagandist institution into a history museum led to the renaming of the CAM to the Central Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism in 1942, upon which the museum passed from the auspices of the League of Militant Atheists into the charge of the USSR Academy

The following chapter will be divided into several subsections, each dealing with a particular element of the complex geopolitical puzzle that the Pontic region from the first decades of the eighteenth century resembled. Firstly, the focus will be on Russia’s chief adversary – the Ottoman Empire, a foe as determined and as ambitious as the tsarist state itself. Then the main features of the Crimean Khanate, as an element of the overall Ottoman military system, will be defined. However, the Khanate was a player in its own right and pursued its own interests which will also be presented in the current chapter. Next the dissertation will outline the development and the downfall of Safavid’s military and political power, followed by the establishment of a new force under the ambitious and talented Nadir Shah. The subchapter “At the Edge of Empires - the Pontic Frontier and its People” will examine the soldiers of the steppe – Cossacks, Kalmyks, and Nogais, who were an essential element of the social and military ethos of the Pontic frontier and played crucial role in the events, which will be analyzed in detail in the second part of the research.

    Sea (Naval) Cadet Corps The Sea Cadet Corps (Russian: Морской кадетский корпус), occasionally translated as the Marine Cadet Corps or the Naval Cadet Corps, is an educational establishment for training Naval officers for the Russian Navy in Saint Petersburg. It is the oldest existing high school in Russia. History The first maritime training school was established in Moscow as the Navigational School in 1701. The School was moved to St Petersburg in 1713 as the Naval Guard Academy. The school was renamed the Sea Cadet Corps on 17 February 1732 and was the key training establishment for officers to the Imperial Russian Navy. In 1800, with the offering of a 'forstmeister' course, the first formal training program for foresters in Russia was established at the academy. On 15 December 1852 the school was enlarged and renamed the Gentry Sea Cadet corps (Морской шляхетный кадетский корпус) with an intake of 360 students. A new building on Vasilievsky Island was also built to house the school. Following the destruction of the building in a fire in 1771 the school transferred to Kronstadt until 1796 when the Czar Paul I ordered a new building in the capital. The school expanded and became the Maritime College in 1867 and renamed again to the Sea Cadet Corps in 1891. The Corps was granted a Royal charter in 1894 and closed after the revolution in 1918 Post Revolution The College reopened in 1918 to train officers for the new Red Navy between 1926 and 1998 the school was named in honour of Mikhail Frunze. The school was merged with another Naval school in 2001 and renamed the Peter the Great Sea Cadet Corps of the St Petersburg Naval Institute.

    Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Muscovy waged a costly struggle against the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for control of the fertile steppe above the Black Sea. This was a region of great strategic and economic importance – arguably the pivot of Eurasia at the time. Yet, this crucial period in Russia’s history has, up until now, been neglected by historians. Brian L. Davies’s study provides an essential insight into the emergence of Russia as a great power. The long campaign took a great toll upon Russia’s population, economy, and institutions, and repeatedly frustrated or redefi ned Russian military and diplo- matic projects in the West. The struggle was every bit as important as Russia’s wars in northern and central Europe for driving the Russian state-building process, forcing military reform and shaping Russia’s visions of Empire. The aim of this article is to present the main proposals of two Tsarist Russia transportation laws, introduced in the spring of 1833 and at the turn of 1834. Both laws were prepared by Count Dmitry Bludov, then Minister of the Interior, and finally accepted by Tsar Nicholas I himself.     Electronic Repository of Russian Historical Statistics - RISTAT.org Regions and administrative division in the Electronic Repository of Russian Historical Statistics Author: Gijs Kessler Introduction The Electronic Repository of Russian Historical Statistics offers key indicators on the social and economic development of Russia's regions for five historical cross-sections (1795, 1858, 1897, 1959, 2002). Data are standardised to facilitate their use for cross-regional and cross- country comparisons in social and economic history research. For entirely pragmatic reasons, the Electronic Repository at this point limits itself to the regions which are part of the modern-day Russian Federation (2002 borders). However, where sources also contained data for other regions part of the Russian state at that point in time, we have also included these data as a supplement to those for the "core regions". This primarily concerns data for the cross-section 1897, often gathered and published on one programme for all of the territory of the Russian empire at the time. For those cross-sections and topics where data were procured primarily from archival sources (1795, 1858 and 1959), we largely limited ourselves to data for Russia proper, in view of the time-consuming character of archival data-mining. Changes of internal borders and administrative divisions in the course of two centuries create serious problems for historical research from a regional perspective. To start with, data should be gathered for a unified list of regions from a wide variety of sources. For those cross-sections where sources allowed us to gather all, or most required data for one single year (1858, 1897, 1959, 2002), this generally did not present problems, because all data relate to one and the same administrative division.

Arthonia didyma, Arthrosporum populorum, Athallia pyracea, Bacidina arnoldiana, Calicium glaucel- lum, Calogaya decipiens, Candelaria pacifica, Candelariella lutella, Chaenotheca furfuracea, Coenogo- nium pineti, Eopyrenula leucoplaca, Lecania erysibe, Lecanora compallens, L. expallens, L. umbrina, Melanohalea septentrionalis, Myriolecis hagenii, M. perpruinosa, Parmelina tiliacea, Placynthiella dasaea, P. icmalea, Ramalina europaea, Rinodina sophodes, R. subparieta, Scutula dedicata, Stran- gospora pinicola, and Trapeliopsis flexuosa are new to the Smolensk Region.
