Cummings, the sub­ ject of the dissertation, kindly consented to a visit at his home where some obscure points of background and principle were cleared up, and these are noted in the thesis where they have been used to chart the course of study and analysis. The Librarian's office of the New York Public Library in New York City helped in providing through the Rare Book Depart­ ment original editions, manuscripts and other material of great value. Finally, the Institute for Philosophical Research at 1998 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco, California, furnished a report on Liberalism which helped in preparing the section on that subject. The University of Wisconsin furnished on loan an original manuscript of Maurer's critical study of S. E. Cummings; the other two structural and prosodic studies were obtained on microfilm from University Microfilms in Ann Arbor, Michigan. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS several other miorofilmed dissertations of use and these along with other original manuscripts from university libraries were studied, which, though they did not bear directly on the topic, nevertheless did serve to gain more exact insight into the cross currents of general poetic influences of the period and the dominant philosophic ideas which determine its main outlook. The annotated bibliography, though it necessarily reflects only a small part of what went into the present study, will serve to implement and detail these remarks. Perhaps the greatest asset to a real understanding of the essay which follows and its particular orientation is the assimilation and foundation of the regular six-year seminary course in philosophy, theology, Scripture, exegesis and allied courses which are a prerequisite to ordination to the priesthood. They compose the light to which the work of i. E, Cummings is held up, to form this Catholic criticism of his art. It involves a literary and cultural evaluation of the poet as an artist contributing to the enrichment of the Christian life with a supporting exposition of his doctrine in relation to traditional Catholic thought. Although Cummings is becoming more and more a topic of dissertation and report, no attempt has been made as yet to evaluate his work in the light of traditional Christian principles. In 1955 there appeared the first three dootoral dissertations on Cummings. At the University of "Wisconsin Robert E. Maurer was the author of E. E. Cummings: A Critical Study. Mr. Maurer's work is a purely literary oritique and attempts quite successfully to defend Mr. Cummings against the attacks of his enemies. In its literary criticism, this study coincides with the present work in a few places, and wherever a parallel treatment occurs it is noted by means of footnotes or in the body of the thesis. Maurer's conclusions UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA ~ SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES UN1VERSITE D'OTTAWA ~ ECOLE DES GRADUES X INTRODUCTION are used to buttress statements in the present work at a few points and have served to make more detailed support of these points unnecessary. The other two studies, Structural Ambiguity in the Poetry of E. E. Cummings. by Louis C. Rus, at the University of Michigan, and E. E. Cummings: the Prosodic Shape of His Poems, by Robert L. Beloof, at Northwestern University, are both technical in nature and concern themselves solely with the intricacies of form, idiom, diction, technical devices and elements of structure. Therpresent study makes use in Part II of their analyses, lists and tables to aid in an understanding of Cummings* technique and its development. Once again, credit is given by way of footnote wherever their investigations are employed to sustain the present argument. Their work aids immeasurably in coming to a thorough understanding of the style and craftsmanship of the subjeot. The present study endeavours to look at the subject from more than a mechanical, literary or even an artistic point of view. Important as literature, poetry and art are in their own right, it is nonetheless essential to understand their philosophical and theological implications if they are to be truly evaluated. This is not to say that such an estimate is to take the form of narrow sectarian criticism or UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA ~ SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES UN1VERSITE D'OTTAWA ~ ECOLE DES GRADUES XI. INTRODUCTION to require that poetry has to be didactic, "conformist", or "dedicated" before it can merit Catholic acceptance and praise. On the oontrary, the position taken in this present work is that art is universal in its approach to life and has its roots in Truth itself; and that "bad" art fails either because of imperfection by its own standards or be­ cause its formal element is in conflict with some more basic principle. This is entirely in accord with the teaching of St. Thomas, as will be shown. As Newman applies it to the field of letters: ...by "Catholic Literature" is not to be understood a literature which treats exclusively or primarily of Catholic matters, of Catholic doctrine, controversy, history, persons, or politics; but it includes all subjects of literature whatever, treated as a Catholic would treat them, and as he only can treat them.1 To analyze a poet's art in such fasion will be a difficult task.

When the baby comes out from the pathway of the vagina of his/her mother, then his/her first cry is depicted that the new born baby is starting to adjustment of of the newly changing environment . For that very first day, the baby‟s survivation is rairtained by his/her primary environment. But the tendency of death is started also. In any time of any space the human baby have to accept death. Not only in the case of human being, but the animals, trees, species, reptailes has also the probability of death. The above mentioned live behind are also survival for the fittest.

    Review: Roadburn Thursday 19th April 2017 By Sander van den Driesche It’s that time of the year again, the After Yellow Eyes it’s straight to the much anticipated annual pilgrimage to Main Stage to see Dark Buddha Rising Tilburg to join with many hundreds of perform with Oranssi Pazuzu as the travellers for Walter’s party at Waste of Space Orchestra, which is Roadburn. As I get off the train the another highly anticipated show, and in heat kicks me right in the face, what a this case one that won’t be played massive difference to the dull and rainy anywhere else (as far as I know). What morning I left behind in Scotland. This happened on that big stage was is glorious weather for a Roadburn phenomenal, we witnessed a near hour Festival! Bring it on! of glorious drone-infused psychedelic proggy doom. In fact, it felt a bit too early for me personally in the timing of the festival to experience such an extraordinarily mind-blowing set, but it was a remarkable collaboration and performance. I can’t wait for the Live at Roadburn release to come out (someone make it happen please!). Yellow Eyes by Niels Vinck After getting my bearings with the new venues, I enter Het Patronaat for the first of my highly anticipated performances of the festival, Yellow Eyes. But after three blistering minutes of ferocious black metal the PA system seems to disagree and we have our first “Zeal & Ardor moment” of 2018. It’s Waste of Space Orchestra by Niels Vinck not even remotely funny to see the On the same Main Stage, Earthless Roadburn crew frantically trying to played the first of their sets as figure out what went wrong, but luckily Roadburn’s artist in residence.

Archival Photographic Files Harriet Monroe (1860-1936) was born in Chicago and pursued a career as a journalist, art critic, and poet. In 1889 she wrote the verse for the opening of the Auditorium Theater, and in 1893 she was commissioned to compose the dedicatory ode for the World’s Columbian Exposition. Monroe’s difficulties finding publishers and readers for her work led her to establish Poetry: A Magazine of Verse to publish and encourage appreciation for the best new writing. 2. Joan Fitzgerald (b. 1930). Bronze head of Ezra Pound. Venice, 1963. On Loan from Richard G. Stern This portrait head was made from life by the American artist Joan Fitzgerald in the winter and spring of 1963. Pound was then living in Venice, where Fitzgerald had moved to take advantage of a foundry which cast her work. Fitzgerald made another, somewhat more abstract, head of Pound, which is in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Pound preferred this version, now in the collection of Richard G. Stern. Pound’s last years were lived in the political shadows cast by his indictment for treason because of the broadcasts he made from Italy during the war years. Pound was returned to the United States in 1945; he was declared unfit to stand trial on grounds of insanity and confined to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for thirteen years. Stern’s novel Stitch (1965) contains a fictional account of some of these events.

It is frequently repeated in the relevant scholarship that Western literary and artistic modernism started in little magazines.1 The useful online Modernist Journals Project (Brown University / Tulsa University), dealing so far only with American and British magazines, uses as its epigraph the much quoted phrase: “modernism began in the magazines”, see SCHOLES and WULFMAN (2010) and BROOKER and THACKER (2009-2013). With two issues published in 1915 and a third one stopped that same year in the galley proofs for lack of funding, the Portuguese little magazine Orpheu inaugurated modernism in Portugal pretty much at the same time as all the other major little magazines in Europe and the United States. This is interesting, given the proverbial belatedness of Portuguese accomplishments, and no less interesting the fact that, like everywhere else, Orpheu was followed, in Portugal as well, By a number of other little magazines.

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term.

    Comparative Evolutionary Thanatology of Grief, with Special Reference to Nonhuman Primates James R. Anderson Kyoto University Abstract: The impact of the dead on the living is considered from an evolutionary comparative perspective. After a brief review of young children’s developing understanding of the concept of death, the interest of looking at how other species respond to dying and dead individuals is introduced. Solutions to managing dead individuals in social insect communities are described, highlighting evolutionarily ancient, effective behavioral mechanisms that most likely function with no emotional component. I then review examples of responses to dying and dead individuals in nonhuman primates, with particular reference to continued transport and caretaking of dead infants, responses to traumatic deaths in wild populations of monkeys and apes, and a detailed case report of the peaceful death of an old female chimpanzee surrounded by members of her group. The emotional correlates of primates’ reactions to bereavement are discussed, and some suggested evolutionarily shared responses to the dead are proposed. Key words: thanatology, death, dying, emotions, social insects, nonhuman primates, chimpanzees Thanatology can be broadly defined as the study of death and dying, and researchers from a wide range of disciplines are thanatologists. Among others, studies in medicine, biology, psychology, anthropology, palaeontology, sociology and philosophy all contribute new knowledge about the antecedents, causes, and consequences of death (e.g. Exley 2004; Haldane 2007; Klarsfeld et al. 2003; Kübler-Ross 1969; Pettitt 2011; Powner et al. 1996). Concerning people’s understanding of death, psychologists generally agree that the typical human adult’s concept of death comprises at least four sub-concepts or “components” (Speece 1995).
