The report is based on two lists of title's,of imaginative literature--fiction for grades four through sixand easy reading for preschool through third grade--recommended in"The Elementary School Library Collection: A Guide to ooks and Other Media" and shows that although a vide variety of qulitty publishers in'the United States have issued foreign children's stories, two-thirds haveonly one or two recommended titles in print, mostly froi Europeanlanguages. Itsscope includes approximately 10,000 citations (titles) of which three-fourthsare books and one- fourth are filmstrips, recordings, transparenciesand other, forms of non-print; of thetotal, 2695 titles fall.in the Fictionand Easy classes. In recentyears such factors as the Frankfurt Book Fair, IBBY, the AndersenMedal, and other similar activities of publishers and librarians, ave resulted'ina steadily increasing interchange of publicatinn betweendifferent countries; !t) this has not only been true of publicationof.authrors for adult rea- r ders but has also been Speciallyso for authors and illustrators of hooks for children-. It has ofcourse been true,for generations of interchange among English-speakingcountries - Great Britain, Austrd- lia,'Canada, and theUnited.States- and in Tact, fiction originally published in England makesup a sizable proportion of the titlespro- vided (6(fr children in the UnitedStates. As authors for children in- - crease their productivity in Australia and Canada,their works are-also being made available to,chIldren in thiscountry. These have, however, been excluded from the presentanalysis. It should also be pointed out thit this 'study further excludes (forreasons of time only) the great wealth of titleS in.theDewey classed of 290, 398,. and 883, most of which are essentially re-tellingsof traditional lore and literary epic, from a great varietyof .cultures. -3- Table I (Appendix) shlvis the numberof authors and titles in- cludeJ in the Fiction and Easy classesby language in the Elementary schdol Library Collection, 9th Edition(hereafter referred to as . - E$LC 19). Works of translat4d autho'rsrepresented in ESLC /9.- Study of the data on a purely quantitatiVebasis indicates that this biblio- greop.hy recommends for elementaryschool children stories from twelve different non- English speakingcr.luntries,.by 66Clifferent authors (three:are duplicated in thetwo classes)and115 different titles. It may not be particularly surprising, though it is worthyof note, that all but-me author al.European in origin (countingthe Russian land-mass as European);one Japanese author reprernts the greatma- , jority of 'countries outside ofEurope. Another obvious characteristic of children's Literatu're inthe United. States (related tocountry of origin) is the wealthof authors of foreign origin, inmany cases first generati- Americans, who write in Englishand whose original pub- lication is in the United States.A survey of titles listed in ESLC /9 reveals such noted examplesas Dhan Gopal.sMukerji, the d'Aulaires, Tarn Yashima, Kate Seredy,°Roger/Devoi,sinand Louise Fatio, Meindert DeJong, Yashiko Uchida, Erick Maugaard, (/- Kyra Petrovskaya Wayne, Sulamith Ish-Kishor and many others, whose names bear witnessto their foreign origi but whoare 'either bi-lingual or write in Englishand are first published in the U.S. Thewriter believes that Isaac Baashevis Singer is the only citizen of the United Stateswho writes for children ina foreign language (Yiddish) andwhose works therefore must be translatolt. Publishers and producers.-,As to who publishesor. produces .of titles which hhve been recommended fir children in ESLC /9,it was found that 41 different publishers/producersare represented here by 115'dif- ferent titles. A few are relatively new and stillsmall houses, such as FourWinds, J.P O'Hara, Delacorte,,Criterion, Pantheon; ,all but two however could definitely be classifiedas "quality" house; - firms whose'name one connotes with quality publication,as a rule, both in format and in content. Of. the 41, 34are United States. pub- lishers, one is Danish (Fhensted),-and sixare producersfwho issue (x) - No cmmparison has been made withthe ChildrenlsoCatalog (12th edition W.Y. HW Willem Company, 1971+ suppl.) but it is doubt- ful that there would be much diefferencebetween the two. Nominacje do tej prestiżowej nagrody zgłaszane są przez narodowe sekcje, a wyboru laureatów dokonuje międzynarodowe jury, w którego skład wchodzą badacze i znawcy literatury dziecięcej. Nagrodę im. H. Ch. Andersena zaczęto przyznawać w 1956 roku, w kategorii Autor, a pierwszy ilustrator otrzymał ją dziesięć lat później. Na nagrodę składają się: złoty medal i dyplom, wręczane na uroczystej ceremonii, podczas Kongresu IBBY. Z okazji przyznania nagrody ukazuje się zawsze specjalny numer czasopisma „Bookbird”, w którym zamieszczane są nazwiska nominowanych, a także sprawozdanie z obrad Jury. Do tej pory żaden polski pisarz nie otrzymał tego odznaczenia, jednak polskie nazwisko widnieje na liście nagrodzonych. W 1982 roku bowiem Małego Nobla otrzymał wybitny polski grafik i ilustrator Zbigniew Rychlicki. Nagroda im. H. Ch. Andersena w 2022 r. Kolejnych zwycięzców nagrody im. Hansa Christiana Andersena poznamy wiosną 2022 podczas targów w Bolonii. Na długiej liście nominowanych, na której jest aż 66 nazwisk z 33 krajów – 33 pisarzy i 33 ilustratorów znaleźli się Marcin Szczygielski oraz Iwona Chmielewska. MARCIN SZCZYGIELSKI Marcin Szczygielski jest znanym polskim pisarzem, dziennikarzem i grafikiem. Jego prace były publikowane m.in. w Nowej Fantastyce czy Newsweeku, a jako dziennikarz swoją karierę związał również z tygodnikiem Wprost oraz miesięcznikiem Moje mieszkanie, którego był redaktorem naczelnym.

  • Hans Christian Andersen Awards Are the Highest International Distinction in Children’S Literature
    HANS CH RISTIAN A NDERSEN A WARDS Christine E. King, Iowa State University The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are the highest international distinction in children’s literature. They are given every other year to a living author and illustrator whose outstanding body of work is judged to have made a lasting contribution to literature for children and young people. The first three awards were made to authors for single works. The author’s award has been given since 1956 and the illustrator’s since 1966. They are presented by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). They have become the “Little Nobel Prize,” and their prestige has grown over the years. Selecting the award win- ners is considered by many to be IBBY’s most important activity. The nominations are made by the National Sections of IBBY, and the recipients are selected by a distinguished international jury of children’s literature specialists. The IBBY emphasizes that the Hans Christian Andersen Awards are not intended to be a national award, but an outstanding international award for chil- dren’s literature. A great effort is made to encourage the submission of candidates from all over the world, and a jury of ten experts is also selected from around the world in order to encourage a diversity of outlook and opinion. The award consists of a gold medal bearing the portrait of Hans Christian Andersen and a diploma and is presented at the opening ceremony of the IBBY Congress. The IBBY’s refereed journal Bookbird has a special Andersen Awards issue which presents all the nominees and documents the selection process.

The gathering with friends, going to events like concerts, watching a sports game, enjoying the great outdoors, travelling. The list goes on. All our activities of the Swiss Society had to be cancelled. There is nothing to report. We cannot plan anything right now, because we don’t know when we’ll be able to meet again in groups. That’s why the edition of this Herald is very different. I hope it will entertain you, put a smile on your face and lets you forget the Corona Virus, at least for a little while.

Programme co-ordination: Annie Everall, in collaboration with Viviana Quiñones About the editors Annie Everall is a Director of ‘Authors Aloud UK’ and a children’s books, libraries and reading consultant. During her career she has developed and managed a range of award winning innovative library services and reading initiatives in the UK including the Derbyshire Big Book Bash for Children in Care, Derbyshire Book Pushers programme of teenage reading advocates, the Birmingham Centre for the Child, The Young Readers UK children’s literature festival and the Stories from the Web online reader development initiative. She is a children’s book reviewer, serves on the CILIP School Libraries Group committee and the Journal of Librarianship and Information Science editorial board. She has been Chair of the CILIP Youth Libraries Group and the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards. She has been the UK representative on the Libraries for Children and Young Adults section committee of IFLA and is now on the Literacy & Reading committee. In 2001 she was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to children’s books and libraries. Viviana Quiñones, from Argentina and France, has worked since 1985 at the French National Centre for Children’s Literature – formerly known as La Joie par les livres – which became part of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 2008.
