Using Italian
This page intentionally left blank Using Italian This is a guide to Italian usage for students who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge. Unlike conventional grammars, it gives special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers. Careful consideration is given throughout to questions of style, register, and politeness which are essential to achieving an appropriate level of formality or informality in writing and speech. The book surveys the contemporary linguistic scene and gives ample space to the new varieties of Italian that are emerging in modern Italy. The influence of the dialects in shaping the development of Italian is also acknowledged. Clear, readable and easy to consult via its two indexes, this is an essential reference for learners seeking access to the finer nuances of the Italian language. j. j. kinder is Associate Professor of Italian at the Department of European Languages and Studies, University of Western Australia. He has published widely on the Italian language spoken by migrants and their children. v. m. savini is tutor in Italian at the Department of European Languages and Studies, University of Western Australia. He works as both a tutor and a translator. Visualizing the Past: Perestroika Documentary Memory Of
VISUALIZING THE PAST: PERESTROIKA DOCUMENTARY MEMORY OF STALIN-ERA TRAUMA by Erin Rebecca Alpert B.A. in Global Studies, College of William and Mary, 2007 M.A. in Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Pittsburgh, 2009 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2014 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences This dissertation was presented by Erin Alpert It was defended on May 12, 2014 and approved by Nancy Condee, Professor, University of Pittsburgh, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures David Birnbaum, Professor, University of Pittsburgh, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures Jeremy Hicks, Reader, Queen Mary University of London, Department of Russian Dissertation Advisor: Vladimir Padunov, Associate Professor, University of Pittsburgh, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures ii Copyright © by Erin Alpert 2014 iii VISUALIZING THE PAST: PERESTROIKA DOCUMENTARY MEMORY OF STALIN-ERA TRAUMA Erin Alpert, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2014 The main goal of this dissertation is to look at how, during perestroika, documentary breaks away from the traditional notions of the genre in order to reexamine and redefine traumatic events from the Stalinist period. The first chapter examines the nuances of three critical terms: “documentary,” “collective memory,” and “cultural trauma.” I then turn to a historical approach, exploring how political culture and technology affected the content, production, and screening of documentaries, first discussing the time leading up to perestroika and then the massive changes during the glasnost era. In the final chapters, I argue that there are three primary approaches the films examined in this project take to understanding the past. -

Results 2017 Ac/e’s Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture. Results 2017 RESULTS 2017 6 Presentation We are now in the fifth year of the AC/E Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE), and it can truly be said that it has come of age. The PICE has consolidated its status as a key instrument for promoting our culture. The dynamic network it has created of professionals in the cultural sector in Spain and abroad demonstrates its commitment to the future. In 2017, PICE has demonstrated its strength by effectively administering a bigger budget and receiving more applications than in previous years. Moreover, the Secretariat of State for Culture has noted that over the year the PICE has perfectly reflected the objectives we set out in the 2020 Culture Plan. The programme’s two-way approach that provides assistance to both visitors and mobility has been key in consolidating the presence of Spain’s creative and cultural sector abroad. It has allowed the PICE to present Spanish creators on five continents, while consolidating creativity in our own country. And reciprocally, we have also received directors, programmers and professionals from more than 60 countries. PRESENTATION 7 PICE aims to position our cultural sector abroad, focused on less established proposals that need the full support of public cultural bodies. Recent years have seen the emergence of creative expressions that require effective institutional support to address the challenge of internationalisation. -

This is expressed in many ways. Wherever Jews have lived, they have built synagogues and schools, and have established social and charitable organisations. Today, the concept of community has changed. While dispersed geographically throughout Europe, we live lives that are intimately connected through social media and mass com- munications. It is right that we feel an empathy and a responsibility to this expanded and wider community as once we felt it only to our imme- diate physical neighbourhood. The European Jewish Fund takes the traditional model of Jewish philanthropy and expands it in a way that meets today’s denition of Jewish community. It aims at linking those from afar with the targeted resources to meet their specic needs and aspirations, spreading Jewish education, culture and social interac- tion, building a united Jewish community for the 21st century in all its diversity.
