Insha’Allah Democracy Insha’Allah: pronounced In-SHAH-lah. Arabic language expression meaning “Allah willing.” LOGLINE Former Pakistani President Musharraf, despite having a legacy as a dictator and being charged with treason, returns to Pakistan and runs for president. SHORT SYNOPSIS In Insha'Allah Democracy, filmmaker Mohammed Naqvi chronicles his journey as a first-time voter in Pakistan. When Mo was 19, General Pervez Musharraf staged a coup d’etat that saw him in power until his exile in 2008. With the country growing increasingly unstable and sectarian, Mo chose to back Musharraf and his supposedly secular liberal platform. But as this wry satire explores, backing military dictatorship is never a good idea. Gaining remarkable access to former dictator Musharraf, the film questions if democracy is truly possible in Pakistan. Through moving first-person accounts and vivid footage, the film offers a compelling portrait of the contradictions and complexities of a nascent democratic process in a country recovering from a long history of military rule. Despite the challenges we and the industry are facing, we are optimistic about 2021. This is because we love cinema and good films and series – and particularly in these difficult times, they are also some thing that is needed by audiences around the world. Time and again in recent years, German feature films and series have succeeded in captivating viewers abroad, and we are confident that this will be the case in 2021 as well. In particular, the new wave of German documentaries is establishing itself increasingly as a favourite with international audiences. We are just as proud of the German Films campaign FACE TO FACE, which has been in existence for six years now, and delighted that we will be able to continue it with a great new pool of talent in 2021 – despite the difficult current conditions. Films and series are created through the work of a large team, which is why we have decided to highlight a greater diversity of film professions in 2021 and are proudly presenting the premiere of our new faces in this issue of GFQ. German Films Quarterly will broaden its format in 2021: We will also open our publication to contri butions dealing with internationally controversial topics in the film industry.

  • Bosnia & Herzegovina
Negative trends associated with the media sphere in previous years persist, such as the media’s low level of professionalism, poor protection and conditions for journalists, a weak and oversaturated media market, an unsustainable public media service, a fragmented media scene, and political influence. BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA 16 EUROPE & EURASIA MEDIA SUSTAINABILITY INDEX 2014 introduction OVERALL SCORE: 2.04 BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) did not show signs of political or economic stabilization in 2013. The governing political parties avoided focusing on substantive reforms and implementing international standards. In April, Ba new political party launched—the Democratic Front, led by Željko Komšić, the Croat member of the B&H tripartite presidency. In the same month, the president of the Federation of B&H, Živko Budimir, was arrested on the accusation of taking bribes to approve amnesties but was released in May due to lack of evidence. In June 2013, public protests in front of Sarajevo’s parliament building and in other cities in B&H highlighted the lack of regulation of citizen IDs for newborns. The citizen initiative across B&H, although holding a promise of revolutionary change, ended as an unsuccessful bid to change politicians’ corruption, inequality, and incompetence. Finally, at the beginning of November, the B&H House of Peoples, in an emergency session and without debate, adopted the proposed amendments and changes to the law on ID numbers. The fact that the protests were organized through online platforms and social media illustrated new media’s growing influence in socially mobilizing the country. However, Serb and Croat parliamentarians framed the protests as an ethnically driven threat to their security and refused to attend parliamentary sessions for several weeks.
