He began with English colour-plate books, Thomas Rowlandson in particular, and then moved onto 20th century illustrators such as Dulac, Rackham, Nielsen, Harry Clarke and Heath Robinson, but reserved his greatest admiration for the French artists who used the pochoir process, and whose books “reached a degree of perfection – above all in the work of George Barbier – which has never been surpassed”. In the 1980s the revival in the fine press movement ignited his interest in this area, and Denis became a long- lasting patron of Susan Allix, who was commissioned to produce over a dozen ‘designer bindings’ for him, whilst also publishing a series of “artist’s books of a brilliance and originality that is entirely their own”. Denis also commissioned bindings from the likes of James Brockman, Mark Cockram, Derek Hood, Sangorski & Sutcliffe, Bayntun Riviere, the Chelsea Bindery and the Cottage Bindery. “As for any deeper wellsprings that may underlie my collecting activities, I would comment only that, for me, owning rare and valuable books just makes life more enjoyable than it would be otherwise. What more need one say?” (quotes taken from Denis Collins’s eponymous article in A Modest Collection. Private Libraries Association 1956-2006, 2007). 1 2 3 4 4 | BONHAMS FINE BOOKS, ATLASES & MANUSCRIPTS Wednesday 16 March 2015 at 1pm The Collection of the late Denis Collins SUSAN ALLIX: ARTIST’S BOOKS 1 • AR ALLIX (SUSAN) A Flora. [Evelyn] tells of the devastation to the city, the personal fear and the spirit of the people in difficulties around her as she survives in the centre of the nightly raids... As it will never be possible to have this same experience, designing the book seemed sometimes similar to creating an historical novel... Certain pages are smoked and burnt. This was done after the printing and owing to the unpredictable nature of the process each copy is different. The Rites of Lucifer On the altar of the Devil up is down, pleasure is pain, darkness is light, slavery is freedom, and madness is sanity. The Satanic ritual cham- ber is die ideal setting for the entertainment of unspoken thoughts or a veritable palace of perversity. Now one of the Devil's most devoted disciples gives a detailed account of all the traditional Satanic rituals. Here are the actual texts of such forbidden rites as the Black Mass and Satanic Baptisms for both adults and children. Victorian Egyptology and the Making of a Colonial Field Science, 1850 – 1906 by Meira Gold Wolfson College Department of History and Philosophy of Science This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Date of Submission: December 2019 Declaration This thesis is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It is not substantially the same as any that I have submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for a degree or diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. I further state that no substantial part of my thesis has already been submitted, or, is being concurrently submitted for any such degree, diploma or other qualification at the University of Cambridge or any other University or similar institution except as declared in the Preface and specified in the text. It does not exceed the prescribed word limit for the History and Philosophy of Science Degree Committee. Abstract Victorian Egyptology and the Making of a Colonial Field Science, 1850-1906 Meira Gold This dissertation provides a new account of the origins of archaeological fieldwork in the Nile Delta. It considers how practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds circulated knowledge about the built environment of pharaonic ruins: monuments, architecture, burials, and soil mounds that remained in situ. I trace the development of Egyptology from an activity that could be practiced long-distance through a network of informants to one that required first-hand field experience.

  • Ralph Steadman
VISITING PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHY RALPH STEADMAN Ralph Steadman was born in 1936 in Wallasey, Cheshire. He began his career as a cartoonist satirising the British social and political scene of the 60s. In the 1970s, responding to what he called ‘the screaming lifestyle of America’ he teamed up with Hunter S. Thompson which resulted in his iconic drawings for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and collaborations ranging from The Kentucky Derby to The Curse of Lono. Many of his drawings were to be seen in Rolling Stone magazine and he produced his book of collected impressions of America in 1974. Over the years his work has appeared in many newspapers and magazines, from Punch and Private Eye in the early years to the New Statesman, The New Yorker and the Independent where he illustrated a series of weekly essays by Will Self called Psychogeography which resulted in two books. Early in his career he turned his creative energy to the literary classics, beginning with Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass and then on to other works including Treasure Island, Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451. He then turned to the lives of Sigmund Freud and Leonardo da Vinci reinterpreting their genius in both words and drawings. His book, The Big I Am, tells the story of mankind beginning with the creation. He wrote Doodaaa in 2002, partly satire and partly autobiography and The Joke’s Over, the account of his relationship with Hunter S. Thompson, in 2006. Much of the 1990s was spent travelling the vineyards and distilleries of the world for Oddbins, the wine merchant.

  • “He Hath Mingled with the Ungodly”
―HE HATH MINGLED WITH THE UNGODLY‖: THE LIFE OF SIMEON SOLOMON AFTER 1873, WITH A SURVEY OF THE EXTANT WORKS CAROLYN CONROY TWO VOLUMES VOLUME I PH.D. THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART DECEMBER 2009 2 ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on the life and work of the marginalized British Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic homosexual Jewish painter Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) after 1873.This year was fundamental in the artist‘s professional and personal life, because it is the year that he was arrested for attempted sodomy charges in London. The popular view that has been disseminated by the early historiography of Solomon, since before and after his death in 1905, has been to claim that, after this date, the artist led a life that was worthless, both personally and artistically. It has also asserted that this situation was self-inflicted, and that, despite the consistent efforts of his family and friends to return him to the conventions of Victorian middle-class life, he resisted, and that, this resistant was evidence of his ‗deviancy‘. Indeed, for over sixty years, the overall effect of this early historiography has been to defame the character of Solomon and reduce his importance within the Aesthetic movement and the second wave of Pre-Raphaelitism. It has also had the effect of relegating the work that he produced after 1873 to either virtual obscurity or critical censure. In fact, it is only recently that a revival of interest in the artist has gained momentum, although the latter part of his life from 1873 has still remained under- researched and unrecorded.
