60 ZuZana Poláčková; Pieter van Duin Montenegro Old and New: History, Politics, Culture, and the People The authors are focusing on how Montenegro today is coming to terms with the task of becoming a modern European nation, which implies recognition not only of democracy, the rule of law, and so forth, but also of a degree of ‘multiculturalism’, that is recognition of the existence of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities in a society that is dominated by a Slavic Orthodox majority. In his context they are analyzing the history of the struggle of the Montenegrin people against a host of foreign invaders – after they had ceased to be invaders themselves – and especially their apparently consistent refusal to accept Ottoman sovereignty over their homeland seemed to make them the most remarkable freedom fighters imaginable and led to the creation of a special Montenegrin image in Europe. This im- age of heroic stubbornness and unique martial bravery was even consciously cultivated in Western and Central Europe from the early nineteenth century onwards, as the Greeks, the Serbs, the Montenegrins and other Balkan peoples began to resist the Ottoman Empire in a more effective way and the force of Romantic nationalism began to influence the whole of Europe, from German historians to British politi- cians, and also including Montenegrin and Serbian poets themselves. And what about the present situa- tion? The authors of this essay carried out an improvised piece of investigation into current conditions, attitudes, and feelings on both the Albanian and the Slavic-Montenegrin side (in September 2012). key words: Montenegro; history; multiculturalism; identity; nationalism; Muslim; Orthodox Montenegro (Crna Gora, Tsrna Gora, Tsernagora) is a small country in the Western Balkans region with some 625,000 inhabitants,1 which became an independent nation in 2006 and a can- didate-member of the EU in 2010. -

JOURNAL OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION HISTORY REVUE D’HISTOIRE DE L’INTÉGRATION EUROPÉENNE ZEITSCHRIFT FÜR GESCHICHTE DER EUROPÄISCHEN INTEGRATION edited by the Groupe de liaison des professeurs d’histoire contemporaine auprès de la Commission européenne 2004, Volume 10, Number 1 The Liaison Committee of Historians came into being in 1982 as a result of an important international symposium that the Commission had organized in Luxembourg to launch historical research on Euro- pean integration. The committee is composed of historians of the European Union member countries who work on contemporary history. The Liaison Committee: – gathers and conveys information about work on European history after the Second World War; – advises the European Union on research projects concerning contemporary European history. Thus, the Liaison Committee was commissioned to make publicly available the archives of the Community institutions; – enables researchers to make better use of the archival sources; – promotes research meetings to get an update of work in progress and to stimulate new research: seven research conferences have been organized and their proceedings published. The Journal of European Integration History – Revue d’histoire de l’intégration européenne – Zeitschrift für Geschichte der europäischen Integration is in line with the preoccupations of the Liaison Committee. Being the first history journal to deal exclusively with the history of European Integration, the Journal offers the increasing number of young historians devoting their research to contemporary Europe, a permanent forum. MOTION - G OVERNOR OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA Retirement - Appreciation HON GEOR(;E CASH (North Metropolitan - Leader of the Opposition) [3.33 pm] - by leave: i move, without notice - That following the retirement on 30 September 1989 of the Governor of Western Australia, Professor Gordon Reid, this House conveys its appreciation to Professor Gordon Reid and Mrs Ruth Reid for the outstanding service they have extended to the people of Western Australia during their term in viceregal office and for the gracious manner in which they have worked to protect and enhance the dignity and respect that the position of Governor should hold under our Westminster system of Parliament. I thank the House for granting me leave on this occasion. The reason I have moved this motion today is that it is the first day the Parliament has returned after a two week recess since the retirement of Professor Gordon Reid as Governor of Western Australia. Members will be aware that Professor Reid was appointed Governor of Western Australia in 1984 and retired on 30 September 1989. It is true that he has retired as a result of ill health, something that we have raised in this House before and about which I have spoken to wish him well in his recovery from his present illness. Professor Reid was a special person in the role of Governor of Western Australia. If we look at Governors this State has had in recent times, in general terms they were people who had been born overseas. -

1 Jack Marshall, DFC Service No: NZ391865 AIR GUNNER Biography by Kim Newth A keenness and desire to engage the enemy were qualities displayed at all times by Flying Officer Jack Marshall, according to his citation for the Distinguished Flying Cross on 12 April 19431. A successful operational career as an air gunner also came at a price, draining reserves of courage and endurance through many long hours of fear, numbing cold and fatigue on life-threatening sorties2. This is his story. ********************************************************* Growing up in the city of his birth, Jack Marshall recalls a happy, relatively trouble-free childhood. He was born in London on 1 August 1920 to English parents, Herbert and Edith Marshall and was the youngest of three brothers in the family. When Jack was in his teens, his father would commute to work as a telegraphist at the Central Telegraph Office as the family had by then moved to a home just out of London. Jack’s school years passed uneventfully and his first job was as an apprentice wrought-iron worker3. Jack’s father, Herbert Marshall, had served as a sapper in the First World War and had also fought in the Boer War. Jack remembers hearing about the battlefields of Flanders and Passchendaele from his father4, but never thought he would be confronted with similar risks even though the threat of war began to loom again through the 1930s. In 1937, Herbert elected to retire early. By this time, his other two sons had left England to join a farming programme in New Zealand. -

It is not difficult to see why. Like many aspects of the German war machine, the Luftwaffe was a crowning achievement of the German rearmament programme. During the 1920s and early 1930s, the air force was a shadowy organization, operating furtively under the tight restrictions on military development imposed by the Versailles Treaty. Yet through foreign-based aircraft design agencies, civilian air transport and nationalistic gliding clubs, the seeds of a future air force were nevertheless kept alive and growing in Hitler’s new Germany, and would eventually emerge in the formation of the Luftwaffe itself in 1935. The nascent Luftwaffe thereafter grew rapidly, its ranks of both men and aircraft swelling under the ambition of its commander-in-chief, Hermann Göring.
