A rope from the first floor wound on an axle on the big wheel and was used to lift heavy weights. Chelmsford Classical School, established in 1325, with Ralph Waldo Emerson of Concord as teacher; later, in 1859, the school was known as Chelmsford Academy. (see Waters' History of Chelmsford pp. 563 - 565). The Academy closed after a short dura- tion because of the War of the Rebellion. The building was later used as the Baptist Parsonage. The bell was procured. by Mr. James Emerson, grandfather of Ted, when the building was made over. size: Made of cast iron, the bell is 16" in diameter at the bottom, 10" high, tapering to a 14" circumference at top; 9" bar across top holds clapper by iron bolt and nut76i" curved arms depend from the top cross bar at each side of bell, into which fit the 2 triangular side braces, 12" x 12" with a 9" cross bar 4" in; an 8" iron rod has hole in end for bell rope Note: Bell is suspended from an iron cradle; cradle pin, not the original, is broken and needs welding in order that bell may ring.
