Last month, various regional newspapers reported that several storks had been sighted in “the Ländle,” or state of Baden-Württemberg. Apparently, the birds returned one and a half months earlier than usual. In past years, storks have migrated back from their winter quarters in Spain, the Mediterranean and North Africa around the middle of March and in early April. In Southwest Germany storks have been celebrated for centuries as messengers of spring and good luck, and as coat-of-arms motifs. In fact, many legends revolve around these large, black-and-white feathered, long red-beaked, red-legged migratory strutting birds. For centuries, storks have been associated with new babies and families. Here, as in the U.S., storks are depicted as delivering a newborn in a cloth bundle to the doorstep or window sill of its welcoming parents. The legend is part of ancient For centuries, storks have been associated with good luck, the arrival of spring, and various myths and legends. Did you know that your heart beats more than 100,000 times a day, pump- ing nearly 1,900 gallons of blood? This means your heart is beating almost 42 million times and pumping about 700,000 gallons of blood a year. February is American Heart Month, a time to bring awareness to the risks of heart disease and ways to stay ‘heart healthy.’ So, show your heart some love this month. One of the first steps to cherishing your heart is to know and understand your heart health numbers:

Monitor and know your blood pressure High blood pressure or hyperten- sion is often called the “silent killer” because many do not know they have it; and it is one of the leading causes of death within the United States.
