  • Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907)
Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

  • Bob's Wildlife Taxidermy Celebrating 30Th Anniversary Orefield Landmark Ready for Another Hunting Season
Bob's Wildlife Taxidermy Celebrating 30th Anniversary Orefield Landmark Ready for another Hunting Season Fall hunting seasons are just around the corner, and thousands of Lehigh Valley sportsmen will soon head afield in search of a trophy. For those hunters lucky enough to bag the buck, bear or bird of a lifetime, Orefield taxidermist Bob V. Danenhower Sr. is ready to preserve your memories. Danenhower said it's hard to believe it's been a quarter century since Bob's Wildlife Taxidermy opened its doors. His passion for wildlife dates to his childhood, and he began studying taxidermy at the age of 13, taking mail order courses from the Northwest School of Taxidermy. “I would have to work in my dad's business, Humphrey’s Hydraulics, to earn enough money to order my next lesson,” Danenhower recalled. “It seemed to take forever, because Dad didn’t pay so well.” In the 70s, Danenhower worked for Laros Taxidermy in Allentown, where he learned the finer points of wildlife art from veteran taxidermist Dick Laros. “I had to wait until I was 18 to take my taxidermy test,” he said. “Eighteen was state law at that time, and I was the first 18-year-old ever to be licensed in Pennsylvania.” Becoming a full-time taxidermist is no easy task, especially when you start with nothing but some cheap hand tools, knowledge and a strong work ethic. “There were several lean years when we really looked forward to the local game warden dropping off a fresh, road-killed deer so we could fill the freezer with venison,” Danenhower said.

  • Ephemera Journal Vol 18 Issue 2
THE EPHEMERA JOURNAL VOLUME 18, NUMBER 2 JANUARY 2016 Bicycle Trade Catalogs BY TALIA S. COUTIN Before the ‘Bicycle Boom’ the bicycle was a luxury item with limited reach but, by 1896, America was home to an estimated four million “wheelmen” and “wheelwomen.” How and why did bicycles take the country by storm? The ‘Golden Age of the Bicycle’ coincided with the ‘Golden Age of Advertising Art.’ Austin Charles Bates, a pioneering adman of the time, estimated that bicycle firms spent more than one billion dollars in 1897. “And yet it paid,” he wrote. “Everyone was bicycle crazy...” Images of wheelmen and wheelwomen appeared everywhere in print, including on products that had nothing to do with bicycling. They graced posters and postcards, magazine covers and cigarette labels, sheet music and card decks – advertising bicycling, if not a particular bicycle brand. Through trade catalogs, companies tried to distinguish their brands with clever copy and alluring graphic designs. Companies spoke directly to consumers, offering them commercial art they could keep. Examining the material, visual, and textual aspects of catalogs from two of America’s leading bicycle manufacturers, the Overman Wheel Company and the Pope Manufacturing Company, reveals how advertising strategies developed between 1881 and 1899 to whet the consumer appetite for bicycles. A beautiful nymph with spaghetti hair gazes behind a screen in a wildly verdant setting that has nothing to do with bicycles. The competing linear and the curvilinear elements define the unique Art Nouveau style of graphic artist Will H. Bradley, who also designed posters for the Overman Wheel Co.

  • Diana's Favorite Things
Diana’s Favorite Things By Trail End State Historic Site Curator Dana Prater; from Trail End Notes, March 2000 “Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes ... “ Although we didn’t find a blue satin sash, we recently discovered something even better. While cataloging items from the Manville Kendrick Estate collection, we had the pleasure of examining some fantastic dresses that belonged to Manville’s wife, Diana Cumming Kendrick. Fortunately for us, Diana saved many of her favorite things, and these dresses span almost sixty years of fashion history. Diana Cumming (far right) and friends, c1913 (Kendrick Collection, TESHS) Few things reveal as much about our personalities and lifestyles as our clothing, and Diana Kendrick’s clothes are no exception. There are two silk taffeta party dresses dating from around 1914-1916 and worn when Diana was a young teenager. The pink one is completely hand sewn and the rounded neckline and puffy sleeves are trimmed with beaded flowers on a net background. Pinked and ruched fabric ribbons loop completely around the very full skirt, which probably rustled delightfully when she danced. The pale green gown consists of an overdress with a shorter skirt and an underdress - almost like a slip. The skirt of the slip has the same pale green fabric and extends out from under the overskirt. Both skirt layers have a scalloped hem. A short bertha (like a stole) is attached at the back of the rounded neckline and wraps around the shoulders, repeating the scalloped motif and fastening at the front. This dress even includes a mini-bustle of stiff buckram to add fullness in the back.

  • Project Description
Project Description Candlewicking is a form of surface embroidery that traditionally uses an unbleached cotton thread on a piece of unbleached muslin. It gets Candlewicking its name from the nature of the thread, which very much resembles the wick used in a candle. Motifs are created using a variety of knots (Colonial) and satin stiches (backstitich). A warm covering made of two layers of cloth filled with a material with loft and tyed together. Tying refers to the technique of using thread, Comforters yarn or ribbon to pass through all three layers of the comforter at reqular intervals. These "ties" hold the layers together during use and especially when the comforter is washed. A warm covering made of two layers of cloth filled with a material with Quilts loft and stitched together in lines or patterns. The top layer is typically pieced together and the bottom is one solid layer. Process of stitching together two layers of fabric, usually with a soft, thick substance placed between them. The layer of wool, cotton, or other stuffing provides insulation; the stitching keeps the stuffing evenly distributed and also provides opportunity for artistic expression. Quilting has long been used for clothing in many parts of the world, especially Quilting in the Far and Middle East and the Muslim regions of Africa. It reached its fullest development in the U.S., where it was at first popularly used for petticoats and comforters. By the end of the 18th century the U.S. quilt had distinctive features, such as coloured fabric sewn on the outer layers (appliqué) and stitching that echoed the appliqué pattern.

  • Eric Clapton
