In fact, it was found the area was already in the mid stages of drying out by the time the survey was undertaken and the local butterfly fauna was very active and often very ragged. The country is mainly gibber plain (Fig. 1) and breakaway but some nice vegetated red dune habitat is present just to the south of Hamilton and again to the northeast of Mt Dare near the Finke River. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. We found the brown minute scavenger beetle (Corticaria sp.) at so many survey plots for the Little Things that Run the City project that we dubbed the species ‘Old Faithful’. I’ve recreated the map of the City of Melbourne within the beetle’s body. Can you trace the outline of Port Phillip Bay? Can you recognise the shape of your suburb? Next time you’re walking in a park or garden in the City of Melbourne, keep a keen eye out for this ubiquitous little beetle. -

BUTTERFLY IDENTIFICATION CHART Sheet 1 MY BUTTERFLY IS: MOSTLY BLUE Medium sized butterflies - 25mm - 60mm wingspan Upper side Under side Rayed Blue Candalides heathi heathi - now a rare butterfly, more often seen in foothills woodland habitat. The caterpillars have adapted to introduced ribwort. Wingspan: 28 - 29mm. Varied or Common Dusky-blue Candalides hyacinthina simplexa - occurs east of the Mt.Lofty Ranges to the Lower South East, flying near its hostplant. Caterpil- lars feed on coarse parasitic dodder laurel growing on mallee. Wingspan: 28mm. Cyprotus blue Candalides cyprotus - This is a rarely seen in SA. Caterpillars feed on Grevillia hueglii and Hakea spp. which are ♂ widely spread in the semi- arid regions and this may indicate a wide, but low density distribution. Wingspan: male 27mm, female 28mm. ♀ Long-tailed Pea-blue Lampides boeticus - often common around its host- plants of small pea flower- ing herbs, shrubs and vines. The caterpillar feeds on a wide range of dissimilar plant species Wingspan: 26mm - 27mm. Satin Azure Ogyris amaryllis meridionalis - the bright metallic blue upper side is usually only seen when flying. At rest only the underside is seen. Caterpillars feed on ♂ mistletoe, only Amyema spp. Wingspan: male and female 34mm ♀ Southern Purple Azure Ogyris genoveva - the bright upper side is only seen when flying. -
