oxford world’ s classics CANDIDE and other stories Voltaire was the assumed name of François-Marie Arouet (1694– 1778). Born into a well-to-do Parisian family, he was educated at the leading Jesuit college in Paris. Having refused to follow his father and elder brother into the legal profession he soon won widespread acclaim for Œdipe (1718), the first of some twenty-seven tragedies which he continued to write until the end of his life. His national epic La Henriade (1723) confirmed his reputation as the leading French literary figure of his generation. Following a quarrel with the worthless but influential aristocrat, the Chevalier de Rohan, he was forced into exile in England. This period (1726–8) was particularly formative, and his Letters concern- ing the English Nation (1733) constitute the first major expression of Voltaire’s deism and his subsequent lifelong opposition to religious and political oppression. Following the happy years (1734–43) spent at Cirey with his mistress Mme du Châtelet in the shared pursuit of several intellectual enthusiasms, notably the work of Isaac Newton, he enjoyed a brief interval of favour at court during which he was appointed Historiographer to the King. After the death of Mme du Châtelet in 1749 he finally accepted an invitation to the court of Frederick of Prussia, but left in 1753 when life with this particular enlightened despot became intolerable. In 1755, after temporary sojourn in Colmar, he settled at Les Délices on the outskirts of Geneva. He then moved to nearby Ferney in 1759, the year Candide was published. -

GLAD Philodemus: life and Works By the middle of the first century BCE a flourishing Epicurean com munity existed at Naples under the leadership of the Greek teacher Siro. At nearby Herculaneum the Syrian Epicurean, Philodemus of Gadara, the house-philosopher of the influential patron Calpurnius Piso, father-in-law of Julius Caesar, was attracting a wide circle of students. Epicureanism also had its contemporary exponents in Latin-Catius Insuber, Rabirius, C. Amafinius, whose prose tracts enjoyed popularity in Rome and in various Italian towns, and the poet Lucretius. The relationship among the Epicurean groups in Italy is not clear but apparently Siro's group in Naples and that of Philodemus at Herculaneum had an open exchange of views. I Both Philodemus and Siro were former pupils of Zeno of Sidon, the scholarch of the Epicurean school in Athens, and one would expect a certain co-ordination in their efforts in promoting Epicurean views in southern Italy. Both groups cultivated interest in literary and philosophical study, thus escaping the charge traditionally levelled at Epicureans that they maintained a deliberate disregard for ge~eral learning; Cicero, for example, refers to both Siro and Philodemus as the "excellent and learned friends" of Torquatus.2 Philodemus' scholarly interest is evident from the number of pa pyrus rolls recovered from Piso's suburban villa at Herculaneum. AENEID III: AENEAS’ VOYAGE PER IMPERIUM by B. TODD THOMASON (Under the Direction of Sarah Spence) ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of Aeneas’ stops at Crete, Mt. Etna, Thrace, Buthrotum, Drepanum, Delos, the Strophades, Actium, and Castrum Minervae in Aeneid III. Of these nine landfalls, six are part of the traditional Aeneas legend while three appear to be Vergilian inventions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the actions and experiences of the Trojans in these various locations in an effort to discover why Vergil selected these particular settings for Aeneas’ adventures. The episodes are divided into those that celebrate Rome’s triumph over the Greek East and those that expose the pain, hardship, and even irony inherent in that triumph with the goal of revealing Vergil’s objective assessment of the empire in which he lived. It endeavors to highlight the important influence of one of Horace’s contemporaries and neighbor in Italy, the Epicurean philosopher and poet Philodemus of Gadara. This is done through considerations of Horace’s self-portrayal as a qualified moralist who meets Epicurean standards and employs their tools of investigation and correction. Epicurus has found it for us, everything is in his books. As Lucretius says in the prooemium to his third book: "As bees in the fiorwey glades sip all the sweets, so we likewise feed on all your golden words ... worthy of life eternal" (3, lOff., Rouse's trans.). What is left to do? One may ask what there is left for the adherents of Epicurus to do ex cept to take the master's doctrine to heart and enjoy life like the intermun dane gods, free from fear of death and superstition. The right doctrine had, ofcourse, to be preserved and spread, also to the barbarians, like Lu ,,,,11 cretius did to the Romans. And the doctrine had to be defended against " old enemies, like Plato, who always could threaten the disciples' peace of mind, and against new enemies who might appear, like the Stoics. Preser vation and defence are the two chief elements to be found in Lucretius and the texts from Herculaneum. Colotes wrote anti-commentaries to. the dialogues ofPlato 1. Hidden in Plain Sight: Martial and the Greek Epigrammatic Tradition Abstract Martial, perhaps the best-known author of Latin epigram, has enjoyed a resurgence of scholarly attention over the past two decades, and much has been made of his self-professed debt to earlier Latin epigrammatists, especially Catullus. Less prevalent, however, has been discussion of how he relates to authors of Greek epigram, which may not be surprising given that Martial passes over the Greek epigrammatic tradition in nearly total silence. This dissertation seeks to explain the silence. Through close readings of specific poems yb Martial, both in themselves and alongside epigrams by his Greek predecessors, I argue that he has fashioned an intentionally ambivalent attitude toward the Greek tradition. Martial contends with a fundamentally Roman literary condundrum – he must negotiate the inevitable and irreconcilable tension between acknowledging the importance of his Greek predecessors and asserting his own claim to superiority over them. But Martial, I suggest, relishes such tensions, depicting Greece and Greek epigram as inconsistent and even bipolar entities which he can then exploit as sources of humor or self-aggrandizement. -

Lucan's Mutilated Voice: the Poetics of Incompleteness
LUCAN’S MUTILATED VOICE: THE POETICS OF INCOMPLETENESS IN ROMAN EPIC ISAIA M. CROSSON Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Classics under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Isaia Crosson All Rights Reserved Abstract LUCAN’S MUTILATED VOICE: THE POETICS OF INCOMPLETENESS IN ROMAN EPIC ISAIA M. CROSSON In this doctoral dissertation I seek to reassess the innovativeness of the young Corduban poet Lucan’s masterpiece, the Civil War. Faced with the abrupt closure of Lucan’s poem 546 lines into Book 10, I adopt the view propounded by Haffter, Masters and Tracy, that what most have taken as incompletion brought on by the poet’s premature death in 65 CE is in fact a deliberate artistic decision. I then argue back from this view and reread several key features of the poem as manifestations of the same deliberate bodily incompleteness, the same sudden mutilation of a voice that the ending of the poem as we have it presents. My dissertation consists of two macro-sections, one on the structural and thematic characteristics of Lucan’s Civil War, and one on the characterization of the two antagonists most actively involved in the conflict: Julius Caesar, himself the author of an incomplete prose account of the very civil war that Lucan chooses to focus on; and Pompey the Great, a broken man whose mangled body reproduces at the microcosmic level the lack of finish exhibited by the textual body of the poem itself.
