That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time.The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans. -

What Is the Tour De France?
What Is The Tour de France? The Tour de France is one of the world’s largest annual bicycle events. Held each July and lasting for 3 weeks, it covers more than 3,300km of flat, hilly and mountainous terrain across France and neighbouring countries. The race started in 1903 and this year will be the 106th race. The overall winner of the race is the cyclist who has ridden the whole route in the lowest accumulated time. The route for the Tour de France changes every year, but usually finishes at the Champs-Élysées in Paris, as it has done every year since 1975. What Is The Tour de France? Each day, the winner is awarded a coloured jersey to wear for the next stage. It’s fun to spot all the jerseys! In 2019, each jersey will have a different design, including images of landscapes, buildings and past race winners The History of the Race During the late 19th century, cycling became a very popular hobby for many people. As time went on, organised bike racing was introduced and professional cycling became especially popular in France. Sports papers such as ‘Le Vélo’ sprung up to cover cycling stories in depth. ‘L’Auto’ was a smaller rival paper, which was desperate to increase popularity so one of its journalists, Géo Lefévre, proposed the idea of organising a big cycle race through France. The History of the Race On the 1st July 1903, 60 cyclists set off from the Au Reveil Matin Café in the suburbs of Paris. They covered 2,428km in a circular route through six stages. -

Between the World Road Champion encountered in a Norwegian night club, who sipped a beer, talked candidly, laughed easily and never let the conversation falter, and the cyclist with a stem, closed face, who fended off the July crowd, protected by a bodyguard or behind the smoked glass of the team bus, ten years had passed. July 1993. In the garden of an old-fashioned hotel near Grenoble, I interviewed Armstrong for three hours. It was the first professional season for this easygoing, slightly cowboyish, and very ambitious Texan. I left with a twenty-five-page interview, the chapter of a future book11 was writing about the Tour de France. ALLA CORRENTE FAUSTO COPPI (1919–1960) From Saturday July 5th to Sunday July 27th, 2014, the 101st Tour de France will take place. This year it is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,664 kilometers (roughly 2,277 miles). It will begin in the United Kingdom (in Leeds), and will go through Belgium, Spain, and France before ending on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 27. Last July, Alla Corrente described the cycling exploits of one of Italy’s greatest cyclists, Gino Bartali (1914–2000). It also described his other role during World War II as a courier/spy for the Italian resistance, and his efforts to save Jews during the Italian Holocaust and German occupation. Since this is the July 2014 Bulletin and since there is much interest among Cenacolisti about the Tour, I thought it would be appropriate to offer this Alla Cor- rente about another Italian participant in several Tour races who won it in 1949 and in 1952. FAUSTO COPPI was an Italian cyclist and the major challenger to Gino Bartali in many cycling races, including the Tour de France. His successes earned him the title Il Campionissimo, or Champion of Champions. He was an all-round racing cyclist, excelling in both climb- ing and time trials, as well as being a great sprinter. Coppi was one of five children born to Domenico Coppi and Angiolina Boveri. Fausto was the fourth child, born September 15, 1919 in Castel- lania, Piedmont, Italy. His mother wanted to call him Angelo, but his father preferred Fausto; so he was named Angelo Fausto, but was known most of his life as Fausto.
