Heyes I’ve done it, you’ve done it, just about every cyclist has done it: wondered what it would be like to ride Le Tour. Just once. It looks hard, and those guys sure look awful while they’re climbing the mountains. Well, except Armstrong. I’m talking mortal, human type people, not aliens from Planet Peloton. French Revolutions is the story of Tim Moore’s adventure in search of adventure: riding the 87th Tour de France. Tim is 36 years old, married, family, and not too terribly active as far as cycling goes. But listening to Phil Liggett’s commentary on Stephen Roche in 1987 (“There’s someone coming through the mist … it can’t be … it is! It’s Roche! It’s Stephen Roche!”) puts the bug in his brain. For the next several years he followed the Tour, all the time thinking how great it would be to experience it. Finally, he decides to ride the 3,630 kilometers in the six weeks before the Tour. Twice as long as Lance. Quoting from the back cover: “Ignoring the pleading dictates of common sense, Tim Moore determined to tackle the most fearsome physical challenge ever conceived by man: the Tour de France. French Revolutions gives us a hilariously unforgettable account of Moore’s attempt to conquer all 2,256 miles of it. “Conquer” might not be quite the right word. He cheats when he can, pops the occasional hay fever pill for an ephedrine rush (a fine old Tour tradition), sips cheap wine from his water bottle, and occasionally weeps on the phone to his wife. But along the way he gives readers an account of the race’s colorful history and greatest heroes: Eddy Merckx, Greg Lemond, Lance Armstrong, and even Firmin Lambot, aka the “Lucky Belgian,” who won the race at the age of thirty-six. This is Tim Moore’s funniest book to date. It is also one of the funniest sports books ever written. The book is a mixture of Tour history and riders stories mixed with his adventures along the way. Pretty funny stuff at times. Like when he describes some of the riders faces when they are riding, all grim determination, especially Bernard Hinault: “Hinault’s default demeanor on a bicycle suggested he’d just been told that some bloke up the road was prancing around in a wedding dress singing, ‘Bernard, Bernard, je m’appelle Bernard.’” If you’re looking for some fun reading this winter after you get done with your roller or trainer session, pick up a copy of this book..

    road test - eddy merckx chm carbon ally see any of this anyway. as seems to be the fashion with every frame made from carbon these days, the bottom bracket seems enormous, especially on such an apparently diminutive frame, and now that the big two have gone for external bearings and oversized bb axles (in this case, a campag centaur ultra torq) it seems that everyone is worried that chris hoy might have a shot of their bikes. for someone who is spindly of stature, this seems like fashion overkill, but hey ho. the top tube did exactly the same as the down tube - moved from a vertically oval shape to a horizontally oval tube, which looked tremendously cool on the top tube because it was almost flat by the time it joined the seat tube. the down tube would have given a cannondale a good run for its money in terms of size, but the frame- set looked perfectly balanced overall, even if it initailly you would sort of wonder whether it’s a great idea to looked way too small for me to pedal. ask a confirmed colnago owner/aficionado to review a the fork was sort of midway between curved and bike not made by ernesto, because there’s a danger that straight, smoothly blending into the head tube by the all i’m going to do is compare one with the other. well, i iplementation of an fsa integrated headset. i must say wished not to fulfil this stereotype during my three day that i am not in favour of integrated headset (neither ride to paris on an eddy merckx chm full carbon frame, is chris king) - not because they don’t work: they do, and i hope i have managed to achieve this.

That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time.The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans.
