Magnoliids & other Primitive Angiosperms Revised 5th of May 2015 Angiosperm, pl angiosperms; Angiospermae n (Greek anggeion (angeion), vessel, small container, & Greek σπέρµα, sperma, seed) A major division of the plant kingdom, commonly called flowering plants as their reproductive organs are in flowers, having seeds which develop in a closed ovary made of carpels, a very reduced gametophyte, & endosperm develop from a triple fusion nucleus; flowering plant producing seeds enclosed in a structure derived from the ovary; flowering plant, plants with ovules enclosed in ovary. A division of the seed plants (spermatophytes) that bear ovules & seeds in closed megaspores (carpels) in contrast to gymnosperms, which have exposed ovules & seeds, born “naked” on the megasporophylls. Angiosperms are distinguished by a unique process of sexual reproduction called “double fertilization”. According to the number of leaves (cotyledons) present in the embryo, two major groups are distinguished, the Monocotyledons & the Dicotyledons. Angiosperms are commonly referred to as “flowering plants: even though the reproductive organs of some gymnosperms are also borne in structures that fulfill the definition of a flower. Cf gymnosperm. Angiosperms have traditionally been split into monocotyledons & dicotyledons, or plants with one or two seed leaves respectively. One group of plants that have two seeds leaves was problematic, as it also had primitive flowers & some traits in common with monocots. This group is the Magnoliids, or primitive angiosperms. The remainder of the dicots are called Eudicots, the prefix eu-, from Greek ἐὐς, eus, good, meaning the good dicots. Magnoliids (Eumagnoliids?) About 8,500 (5,000-9,000) spp in 20 angiosperm families, of large trees, shrubs, vines, lianas, & herbs that are neither eudicotyledons nor monocotyledons, distributed in tropical & temperate areas. -

Box 161, Bogor 16001. Introduction Data presented here are the preliminary results of research on benzoin in North Sumatra by two projects dealing with non-timber forest products in Indonesia1. It was decided to study benzoin among other products, because of its interesting management, and because very little data was available on present exploitation. This product has been used, exploited and traded for several centuries, but historical information is sparse. Colonial foresters led some work at the beginning of this century, but little interest has been shown in non-timber forest products from that period until very recently. Exploratory fieldwork was initiated in October of 1996 and new members of the team will start their research at the beginning of 1998. So this paper will raise questions rather than provide answers. Benzoin is the resin of various species of Styrax trees (Styracaceae). One group of species, as described below, is distributed throughout Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, and may be in Java and Bali. As will be observed later, its production is over 1000 tonnes/ year. Another group of species is found in continental South-East Asia.The main resin producing species is Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib ex Hartwiss (Pinyopusarerk, 1994) and Styrax benzoides Craib. -

Abstract: This guide is a compilation of limited morphological and biological information on the winged morphs of 60 species of aphids that have been collected in Costa Rica. It should not be viewed as a definitive taxonomic treatise on the aphids of Costa Rica, rather it is a tool that can be used to assist in research on the biol- ogy, host plant relationships, taxonomy, and virus transmission capabilities of aphids. Each species is covered in an identical manner. Morphological and biological information is provided in both Spanish and English as well as photographs of slide mounted specimens. Keys are provided to help the user in identifying the species. Most of the specimens examined were taken in traps associated with epidemiological studies. -

BOER graduated in 1985 as a tropical forester from Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands. From 1986-1989 he worked in Burkina Faso in the 'Village Forestry Project' focusing on small-scale plantation establishment and nursery planning and management. In this work, training the foresters of the Forest Service was a major component, as was the planning, monitoring and evaluation of all project activities at provincial level. From 1990-1992 he worked as an agroforestry expert in a forestry research project in East Kaliman tan, Indonesia, where the land use practices of forest settlers and their adoption of agroforestry techniques were studied. The training ofloca l foresters and agro- foresters was again an important issue. Since 1993 Boer has been involved in the Prosea Programme as a staff member of the Publication Office. He was asso ciate editor for PROSEA 5(2): Timber trees: Minor commercial timbers (1995), Prosea 5(3): Timber trees: Lesser-known timbers (1998), focusing on silvicul ture, wood anatomy and wood properties, and for Prosea 12(1): Medicinal and poisonous plants 1. He has also contributed to other Prosea Handbook volumes. He is responsible for developing the electronic publications of Prosea. A.B.
