Een retorische analyse van South Park Jasper Leysen 01003196 Promotor: Dr. Kris Rutten Masterproef neergelegd tot het behalen van de graad van master in de Pedagogische Wetenschappen, afstudeerrichting Pedagogiek & Onderwijskunde Voorwoord Het voorwoord schrijven voelt als een echte verlossing aan, want dit is het teken dat mijn masterproef is afgewerkt. Anderhalf jaar heb ik op geregelde basis gezwoegd, gevloekt en getwijfeld, maar het overheersende gevoel is toch voldoening. Voldoening om een werk af te hebben waar veel tijd en moeite is ingekropen. Voldoening om een werk af te hebben waar ik toch wel fier op ben. Voldoening om een werk af te hebben dat ik zelfstandig op poten heb gezet en heb afgewerkt. Althans hoofdzakelijk zelfstandig, want ik kan er niet omheen dat ik regelmatig hulp heb gekregen van mensen uit mijn omgeving. Het is dan ook niet meer dan normaal dat ik ze hier even bedank. In de eerste plaats wil ik mijn promotor, dr. Kris Rutten, bedanken. Ik kon steeds bij hem terecht met vragen en opmerkingen en zijn feedback gaf me altijd nieuwe moed en inspiratie om aan mijn thesis verder te werken. Ik apprecieer vooral zijn snelle en efficiënte manier van handelen. Nooit heb ik lang moeten wachten op een antwoord, nooit heb ik vele uren zitten verdoen op zijn bureau. Bedankt! Ten tweede wil ik ook graag Ayna, Detlef, Diane, Katoo, Laure en Marijn bedanken voor deelname aan mijn focusgroep. Hun inzichten hebben ervoor gezorgd dat mijn analyses meer gefundeerd werden, hun enthousiasme heeft ertoe bijgedragen dat ik besefte dat mijn thesis zeker een bijdrage is voor het onderzoeksveld. -

Neal __________________________________________________________ Institutional Setting Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a private, secular university with an undergraduate college dedicated to providing students with a liberal arts education. The student body numbers around 4500, many of whom graduated in the top ten percent of their high school class. The majority of these students are from the South (53 percent) and are affiliated with some branch of Christianity (Catholicism is the single largest denomination represented). However, in recent years, the college has been working hard to increase the racial, economic, regional, and religious diversity of the undergraduate population. Eliminating the SAT requirement and admitting students based on a more holistic approach has yielded some success in this regard. Students tend to be motivated and bright, involved and inquisitive. The challenge, for many, is balancing their academic interests and expectations with their various extracurricular commitments. Wake Forest upholds the teacher-scholar ideal for its professors, which demands excellence in both teaching and research. This encourages professors to develop their pedagogical skills, to consider connections between their teaching and research, and allows for smaller classroom sizes. The faculty/student ratio on campus is 11:1. My appointment is in the Religion Department where courses serve two primary purposes. First, our introductory courses fulfill a humanities requirement for the college. -

The Simpsons Tapped Out - Analysis and Proposed Events Overview Players like myself have faithfully enjoyed The Simpsons Tapped Out (TSTO) for several years. The developers have continued to expand the game and provide updates in response to player feedback. This has been evident in tools such as the IRS Building tap radius, the Introduction Unemployment Office Job Manager and the Cut & Paste feature, all of which are greatly appreciated by players and have extended the playability of TSTO for many of us who would have otherwise found the game too tedious to continue once their Springfields grew so large. Notably, as respects Events, positive reactive efforts were identifiable in the 2017 Winter Event and the modified use of craft currency. As evident from the forums, many dedicated and heavily-invested players have grown tired with some of TSTO's stale mechanics and gameplay, as well as the proliferation of uninspired content, much of which has little to no place in Springfield, if even the world of "The Simpsons." This Premise player attitude is often displayed in the later stages of major Events as players begin to sense monotony due to a lack in changes throughout an Event, resulting in a feeling that one is merely grinding through the game to stock up on largely unwanted Items. Content-driven major Events geared toward "The Simpsons" version of Springfield with changes of pace, more like mini-Events, and the Solution addition of new Effects, enabling a variety of looks while injecting a new degree of both familiarity and customization for players. The proposed Events and gameplay changes are steeped in canonical content rather than original content. -

Prolegomeni blasfemi: caricature seicentesche e fotografie ottocentesche Dario Fo, nel prologo a Mistero buffo – l’opera teatrale messa in scena per la prima volta il 1° ottobre del 1969 – spiegava agli spettatori anzitutto l’origine del temine «mi- stero» e la sua declinazione in «mistero buffo»: Mistero è il termine usato già dai greci dell’epoca arcaica, per definire culti esoterici dai quali prendevano vita le rappre- sentazioni di eventi sacri: misteri eleusini e dionisiaci. Il termine fu ripreso dai cristiani per indicare i propri riti fin dal III e IV secolo dopo Cristo. Ancora oggi, in chiesa ci capita di ascoltare il sacerdote che declama: «Nel primo mistero glorioso... nel secondo mistero...» e via dicendo. Nel Medioevo «mistero» acquista tout court il significato di rappresentazione sacra; mistero buffo significa, dunque, rappresentazione di temi sacri in chiave grottesco-satirica. Ma sia chiaro che il giullare, cioè l’attore comico popolare del Medioevo, non si buttava a sbeffeggiare la religione, Dio e i santi, ma piuttosto si preoccupava di smascherare, denunciare in chiave comica le manovre furbesche di coloro che approfittando della religione e del sacro si facevano gli affari propri1. Credits: 3 Expected Outcomes/ Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able to analyze South Park as a literary text. 2. Students will be able to discuss the meaning and significance of South Park from interdisciplinary perspectives, including cultural, social, historical and political contexts. 3. Students will use a wide-range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate South Park as a text dealing with relevant religious, political, and social issues. Assessment: Fulfillment of course objectives will be evaluated through one of two paper options: Option A: 3 papers. Students will be required to write 2 short papers and one final paper. Option B: 5 papers. Students will be required to write 5 medium length papers. All papers are due throughout the semester on dates designated. The papers will revolve around a character, plot or element of the program pertaining to a specific episode, assigned readings and/ or in-class discussions. Students will present their ideas in class (mandatory, at least ONCE) and workshop them with other students. ***Class discussion and participation will be an important determinant of the fulfillment of the learning objectives. *** Course Description: Students will become familiar with the theory of political correctness and its place in modern society.
