Children are very welcome – details of children’s activities today are in the order of service. for newcomers and visitors Welcome! At the 10.45am Cathedral Eucharist on Sunday, look for the welcome stewards in blue sashes, or ask a member of the stewarding team if there’s anything you’d like to know. News and Notices LENT EVENSONG SERMON SERIES At Sunday Evensongs in March a series of preachers will preach on their favourite hymn by John Bell and Graham Maule. As members of the Wild Goose Resource Group, a semi-autonomous project of the Iona Community, John and Graham have together written a rich collection of new hymns often set to traditional hymn tunes or folk melodies. John Bell will be our Guest Preacher at the Cathedral during Holy Week. The preacher this evening is Canon Sheana Barby, on the hymn ‘Jesus Christ is waiting’. THE PILGRIM PASSPORT has arrived and is available for sale in The Sanctuary priced at only £5.00. Once purchased, you are able to ask cathedrals for a sticker or a stamp to record your visit and there is space in the passport to note your own impressions and responses. We hope the passport will encourage people to visit other cathedrals and sites such as abbeys and places of pilgrimage. Pick yours up and start visiting! LENT & WEDNESDAY GROUPS The Bridge Chapel Lent Group will meet in the Sir Richard Morris Lounge from 2.30 – 4.00 pm on Wednesday 4th March, Tuesday 10th March, Monday 16th March, Thursday 26th March, and Wednesday 1st April. The Wednesday Group meets on Wednesday evenings (7.00 pm – 8.00 pm) in The Sanctuary. Both groups will be reading the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent book, Saying Yes to Life, by Ruth Valerio MUSIC AND SILENCE led by ‘Sixtus’ will be held on Tuesday 3rd March, 7.00 – 9.00 pm in the Cathedral. An opportunity to sing as a group and learn music from the Taizé and Iona communities. After gentle body and voice warm-ups and a sung round, short songs and chants will be taught in four- part harmony. After an interval and refreshments, the music is sung in a more contemplative fashion. All are welcome, there is no charge. RISE! TAKE YOUR MAT AND WALK. This year's Derby City Centre service for the World Day of Prayer will take place on Friday 6th March at 11am at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Burton Road, Derby, DE1 1TJ. All are welcome to join us for this service, which this year is written by the women of Zimbabwe. There is a church car park and a light lunch will follow the service. There will be a FAIRTRADE STALL after the Eucharist on Sunday 8th March, selling a selection of Fairtrade goods. Come and have a browse, and get your Easter eggs and cards! If you are interested in helping out two or three Sundays a month, please speak to people on the stall A COLLECTION and CARD for the Bishop of Repton are both available in the Cathedral, one to contribute to, one to sign. Bishop Jan is moving on from the Diocese of Derby to become Residentiary Canon (House for Duty) at Lichfield Cathedral and Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Lichfield. Bishop Jan will preach at Evensong at Derby Cathedral on Sunday 8th March at 6.00 pm and hopes to be able to say a less formal farewell after that service. She will be installed in Lichfield Cathedral at Evensong (5.30 pm) on Friday 3rd April. Everyone is welcome to both these services. WALK WELL DERBY Would you like to help people in your community to get active and healthy? If you enjoy walking and have a few spare hours per week then why not become a Volunteer Walk Leader. Apologies for absence were received from John and Valerie Rigalsford, Kath Cummings and Jean Turner. 2. 13/9/114 Minutes of Meeting The Minutes of the meeting held on 12 July 2017 were unanimously approved by the PCC and signed by the Chairman. 3. 163/9/115 Matters Arising 16/7/85 Grab handles. The Chairman thanked Alan Wilson for putting up the Grab Handles at the entrance to the church. Organ loft. Richard thanked everyone involved in the clearance of the organ loft. Mary said she had done some investigating and found that unfortunately the old sheet music did not have any resale value. The search for mice entrance holes was unsuccessful. 16/7/92 Richard reminded the PCC that a priesting service for Anne Phillips was to be held on 20 September at 7 pm at All Saints Church and he looked forward to seeing everyone there. Roger Flint is waiting to have his Reading Licence transferred to the Parish.

    GS Misc 1158 GENERAL SYNOD Next Steps on Human Sexuality Following the February 2017 Group of Sessions, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York issued a letter on 16th February outlining their proposals for continuing to address, as a church, questions concerning human sexuality. The Archbishops committed themselves and the House of Bishops to two new strands of work: the creation of a Pastoral Advisory Group and the development of a substantial Teaching Document on the subject. This paper outlines progress toward the realisation of these two goals. Introduction 1. Members of the General Synod will come back to the subject of human sexuality with very clear memories of the debate and vote on the paper from the House of Bishops (GS 2055) at the February 2017 group of sessions. 2. Responses to GS 2055 before and during the Synod debate in February underlined the point that the ‘subject’ of human sexuality can never simply be an ‘object’ of consideration for us, because it is about us, all of us, as persons whose being is in relationship. Yes, there are critical theological issues here that need to be addressed with intellectual rigour and a passion for God’s truth, with a recognition that in addressing them we will touch on deeply held beliefs that it can be painful to call into question. It must also be kept constantly in mind, however, that whatever we say here relates directly to fellow human beings, to their experiences and their sense of identity, to their lives and to the loves that shape and sustain them.

Advent Hope is open to all and will be held on Mondays from 8am - 9am and repeated on Thursdays from 8pm - 9pm. Email [email protected] for the access link. Interim Diocesan Director of Education announced Canon Linda Wainscot, formerly Director of Education for the Diocese of Coventry, will take up the position as Interim Diocesan Director of Education for two days a week during the spring term 2021. Also, Dr Alison Brown will continue to support headteachers and schools, offering one and two days a week as required, ensuring their Christian Distinctiveness within the diocese. Both roles will be on a consultancy basis, starting in January 2021. Linda said: “Having had a long career in education, I retired in August 2020 from my most recent role as Diocesan Director of Education (DDE) for the Diocese of Coventry (a post I held for almost 20 years). Prior to this, I was a teacher and senior leader in maintained and independent schools and an FE College as well as being involved in teacher training. In addition to worshipping in Rugby, I am privileged to be an Honorary Canon of Coventry Cathedral and for two years I was the chair of the Anglican Association of Directors of Education.

Sadly, at this present time of crisis it is impossible for us to gather together or to bless the oils. Thanks to modern technology, however, it is possible for us to reaffirm our commitment to ministry together and this service will be streamed on our Diocesan Facebook page and website to enable us to do so. We hope you will feel able to join in with the service from home. We especially hope that priests, deacons and lay ministers will feel able to join in with the renewal of commitment to ministry at the appropriate point in the service. As usual, everything that the congregation is invited to join in with is in bold type. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, we cannot provide printed versions of the hymns. However, these are well-known hymns, are in many hymn books and the texts are also available online, so we hope that you will be able to provide yourselves with copies and join in.
