Barrow on Trent DE73 7HQ is fortunate in having a Parish Council which reflects the feeling of the local residents. The Parish Council have been proposing to transfer the land in question to Stenson Fields Parish over a number of years Changes within the parish over the last 20 years have resulted in the parish becoming isolated from the north- eastern portion of the parish. This followed directly from the construction of the A50 road which cut across the parish and isolated the portion of the land which is contiguous to the parishes of Stenson Fields and the City of Derby. -

Physical constraints (i.e. topography): The site has been assessed and it is considered that the site is not physically constrained. Environmental constraints including flood risk: The site has been assessed and it is considered that the site is not environmentally constrained. This assessment included consideration of flood risk. From the Bishop of Oxford As a Diocese, we are prayerfully seeking the person whom God is calling to be the next Bishop of Dorchester, one of three Area bishops in the Diocese of Oxford. At the heart of our vision we discern a call to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. Most of all we are seeking a new Bishop for Dorchester who will seek to model those qualities and inspire the Church of England across the Dorchester Area to live them out in our daily lives. Our new Bishop will therefore be a person of prayer, immersed in the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, able to be at home with and to love the clergy, parishes and benefices in many different church traditions and many different social contexts. We are seeking a person able to watch over themselves in a demanding role and to model healthy and life-giving patterns of ministry. We want our new bishop to be an inspiring leader of worship, preacher and teacher in a range of different contexts and to be a pastor to the ministers of the Area. The Bishop of Dorchester leads a strong and able Area Team in taking forward the common vision of the Diocese of Oxford in the Dorchester Area. Deanery News April 2019 Your Bi-monthly Newsletter Dear all It is good to hear how people are keeping Lent and preparing for our Easter and Pentecost celebrations in a variety of ways. Do please have a look through the newsletter at the things that have happened and that are going on. We always welcome news and updates, so please keep sending them to Debbie at [email protected] who you can also email to subscribe to this newsletter if you don’t already (or unsubscribe if you want to). Our new Bishop of Derby, Rt Rev Libby Lane, is also preparing to fully take up her post. She will be installed at Derby Cathedral on Saturday 25th at 2.30pm. Everyone is very welcome to attend. Bishop Libby is then planning to visit each of the Deaneries, to meet a wide range of people and to pray with them. She will be visiting Mercia Deanery on Wednesday 5th June, as part of which she will be speaking at our Deanery Thy Kingdom Come service, which will be hosted by St Mark’s Winshill starting at 7:45pm. Again, everyone is very welcome. At our recent Deanery Synod meeting, we thought about the Church of England’s programme of change, Setting God’s People Free. The Implementation and Impact of the Reformation in Shropshire, 1545-1575 Elizabeth Murray A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts United Faculty of Theology The Melbourne College of Divinity October, 2007 Abstract Most English Reformation studies have been about the far north or the wealthier south-east. The poorer areas of the midlands and west have been largely passed over as less well-documented and thus less interesting. This thesis studying the north of the county of Shropshire demonstrates that the generally accepted model of the change from Roman Catholic to English Reformed worship does not adequately describe the experience of parishioners in that county. Acknowledgements I am grateful to Dr Craig D’Alton for his constant support and guidance as my supervisor. Thanks to Dr Dolly Mackinnon for introducing me to historical soundscapes with enthusiasm. Thanks also to the members of the Medieval Early Modern History Cohort for acting as a sounding board for ideas and for their assistance in transcribing the manuscripts in palaeography workshops. Church Broughton Parish, Derbyshire: An oral history, 1900-1940 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Janet Arthur De Montfort University June 2019 Abstract This study is an oral history of a Derbyshire dairying parish during the first forty years of the twentieth century. The aim was to discover the nature and cohesion of society in a parish with no resident lord of the manor, the effects on the parish of changes in agricultural practice and the impact of government interventions on the lives of individuals. The lives of residents were affected by the history and layout of the parish, based on the geography and previous ownership. Having no resident lord of the manor generated a social structure with three layers: firstly, seven key people, outsiders who did not own land, secondly, networks of small landowners and artisans, who had lived there for generations, finally, labourers, many also families of long standing. Religion was important in supporting this social structure. Being an ‘open’ parish had enabled a chapel to be built and the provision of a school, though not all children attended this school. Through widespread ownership, there was a freedom to live and work without being beholden to neighbouring estates, as alternative employment could be found elsewhere for any surplus workers. Mechanisation improved farming practice, but, though government intervention during the First World War helped, the downturn afterwards and competition between farmers meant dairying was precarious, until the foundation of the Milk Marketing Board in 1933 to control production and price. The sale of the Duke of Devonshire’s farms in 1918 to the occupiers and the County Council removed the prestige that his tenants had enjoyed. -
