It has been the subject of extensive discussion both within the House of Bishops and the Bishops’ Meeting (consisting of all diocesan, suffragan and full time assistant bishops in the Church of England), and it is now published under the authority of the House. We are happy to commend it for prayerful study within the dioceses of the Church of England and to invite other Churches in the Anglican Communion and our ecumenical partners to let us have their reflections on it. On behalf of the House of Bishops @ Rowan Cantuar @ David Ebor November 2004 Foreword by the Chair of the Working Party From the very beginning, I have understood the Working Party’s mandate to have been further study of episcopacy so that the issues relevant to the admission of women to the episcopate in the Church of England are raised and addressed. We have tried to do this as comprehensively as possible and hope that our report will prove to be a useful resource for discussion and debate in the Church as a whole, as well as in General Synod. The Working Party was set up by the House of Bishops in response to a request from General Synod and consisted of bishops, ordained and lay women, expert consultants and ecumenical participants. A wide range of views on the subject was to be found among the members – and we have struggled, in the course of our meetings, to understand what each member has been trying to say to us all. Our meetings have demonstrated a basic unity, not only in faith, but quite often in theological approach and commitment to scholarship. It would be wrong to pretend that there has been no pain involved in working together. Members have, however, realized the necessity of this difficult task for the sake of the Church, its mission and its unity. We received over seven hundred submissions in writing. They were from a variety of points of view. Each was read and evaluated in the light of our mandate. We saw a large number of those who had made submissions though, regrettably, we could not see them all. We were able to consult a number of our partner churches in the Anglican Communion, among the Porvoo churches and also some of our ecumenical partners. We hope that many of the views expressed in the submissions and the consultations are reflected in the report. Our approach has been to consider the emergence of episcopacy in the light of the Bible and the experience of the earliest Christian communities. We have also taken account of specifically Anglican emphases in this regard, especially from the sixteenth century onwards. We hope that this work will have value more widely than in just the context of our present discussion. We have considered the place of women in Church and society and have attempted to relate this to an account of women’s ministries down the centuries. Once again, we have done this with our Bibles open before us. Whilst we have not shied away from detailed exegesis of the so-called ‘difficult’ texts, on the one hand, or of the ‘egalitarian’ ones, on the other, our basic approach has been to situate the questions about the place of women in society, and their ministry in Church, within the whole trajectory of a properly biblical anthropology. We have also, of course, reflected on how women have actually exercised ministry since biblical times. Many of the theological arguments involved in the question about women bishops were also raised during the debate about the admission of women to the priesthood. Some of them have, however, been raised in a new way or with fresh force. There are others, of course, which are wholly new. Each has been given attention in the light of the decision which the Church has to make about women bishops. We have set out our views on reception and development not simply in terms of process but as theological ideas. This is important for a living tradition which seeks to be faithful to what has been handed on but seeks also to engage with changing circumstances and new situations. Once again, we hope that the material will have some use beyond the present context. We have examined the possible options for maintaining as much unity as possible, if the Church were to decide that it would be appropriate to admit women to the episcopate. The theological implications for each option have also been outlined. It may well be that theological tidiness has to be balanced, in this context, with the need to maintain as much unity as is possible and to go as far as we can in respecting conscience. The manner in which this is done should be such that the effectiveness of the Church’s mission and ministry is not unnecessarily jeopardized. Beyond its immediate use in a General Synod debate, we are hoping that an appropriate educational process can be developed and made available so that the report can be studied more widely by individuals and groups in dioceses, deaneries and parishes. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

He welcomed all present and essential notices were given, the theme for this year’s Synod being “Social Liturgy: Doing God and Doing Good”. The Bishop referred to the spiritual addresses to be given by the Venerable Christopher Futcher, Archdeacon of Exeter, the Reverend Canon Andy Bowerman, Anglican Alliance, and the Venerable Robert Jones, Archdeacon of Worcester. Bishop Michael made special mention of the absence of Father Faiz Jerjes of St George‘s Baghdad, who was supporting his wife Mrs Nawal George through her mother‘s illness, and of Mr Dawlat Aboona and his wife Mrs Nada Tafankchi, en route to Synod from Baghdad. Bishop Michael introduced special guests from the companion Dioceses of Cyprus and the Gulf: the Right Reverend Julius Wanyoike, Anglican Bishop of Thika, and his colleague Mrs Annah Njogu; and the Venerable Christopher Futcher, Archdeacon of Exeter, and his colleague Mrs Sue Parks. 2018/02 GREETINGS TO AND FROM SYNOD Bishop Michael conveyed greetings from Bishop Clive Handford and his wife Jane, and from the Venerable Dr Ian Young. 2018/03 ORDINATIONS, ARRIVALS, DEPARTURES AND DEATHS Bishop Michael reported that since the last Synod, the Reverend Harry Ching, Curate in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, and the Reverend Zhu Peijin, Curate in Kuwait, had been ordained priests.

Vélez LOS ANGELES, California, JAN. 21, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The second part of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century have shown significant developments in the ecumenical movement, the work of uniting Christians in their religious beliefs, practices and ecclesiastical authority. Last Saturday, the establishment of the first ordinariate -- a structure similar to that of a diocese -- for Anglicans who wish to be in full communion with the Catholic Church marks an important step in this ecumenical movement. The work of promoting unity between Christians was begun by Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity, who taught his disciples to love one another and to forgive each other their faults. He chose Peter and his successor to be the visible head of his Church, and before his death, he prayed to the Father that all his disciples would maintain the unity of the faith and thus give glory to God and lead others to believe in God. Christians, out of human weakness and fallen nature, have however, been divided over the centuries. From the first centuries, bishops and Christian writers have attempted to reunite separated Christians with mixed results. The greatest divisions among Christians resulted in separation with the Orthodox in the 11th century, and Protestants and Anglicans in 16th centuries. These divisions had many complicated causes, including cultural and political elements, and led to greater separation.

    Updating Report for SCCA Campaign 2012 proved incredibly important in raising public awareness of the institutional cultures and dynamics that hinder the effective implementation of Child Protection/Safeguarding policies and procedures. The Savile Inquiries, the Rochdale cases and the inquiries and police investigation into child sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy within the Diocese of Chichester all in 2012 raise considerable concerns about how those placed in positions of authority within institutions, local authorities and police services as well as within the wider communities respond to Child Sexual Abuse that is taking place in some cases quite literally before their eyes. The campaign and the Government’s response The Stop Church Child Abuse (“SCCA”) campaign was launched in March 2012. The campaign is an alliance of clergy sexual abuse survivors, charities supporting survivors, specialist lawyers and interested individuals working in the field of child safeguarding. The campaign aims to highlight the serious safeguarding failures of church institutions. The campaign and many individuals have called on the Government to institute an independent inquiry into child sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy, religious and other church officials within all Dioceses and institutions of the Catholic Church in England & Wales and the Church of England and in Wales. Many contacts and letters have passed between the campaign’s supporters and the MPs. The Government response to this pressure has been (quoting from the Education Secretary’s letter of 25th May 2012):- 1) “No child should ever have to tolerate abuse. I am not however convinced of the need for a public inquiry, as the key issues are already being addressed by reforms we have underway.

    Building community: Anglo-Catholicism and social action Jeremy Morris Some years ago the Guardian reporter Stuart Jeffries spent a day with a Salvation Army couple on the Meadows estate in Nottingham. When he asked them why they had gone there, he got what to him was obviously a baffling reply: “It's called incarnational living. It's from John chapter 1. You know that bit about 'Jesus came among us.' It's all about living in the community rather than descending on it to preach.”1 It is telling that the phrase ‘incarnational living’ had to be explained, but there is all the same something a little disconcerting in hearing from the mouth of a Salvation Army officer an argument that you would normally expect to hear from the Catholic wing of Anglicanism. William Booth would surely have been a little disconcerted by that rider ‘rather than descending on it to preach’, because the early history and missiology of the Salvation Army, in its marching into working class areas and its street preaching, was precisely about cultural invasion, expressed in language of challenge, purification, conversion, and ‘saving souls’, and not characteristically in the language of incarnationalism. Yet it goes to show that the Army has not been immune to the broader history of Christian theology in this country, and that it too has been influenced by that current of ideas which first emerged clearly in the middle of the nineteenth century, and which has come to be called the Anglican tradition of social witness. My aim in this essay is to say something of the origins of this movement, and of its continuing relevance today, by offering a historical re-description of its origins, 1 attending particularly to some of its earliest and most influential advocates, including the theologians F.D.
