We hope that you will enjoy its contents and it will serve the goal of bringing us together as a diocesan family around a commitment to mission and growth. We are at an exciting time in the life of our diocese. Bishop Martin’s Helping people on their Christian journey visitations are the start of an extensive period of prayer and Free resources about the Christian faith consultation as we seek to discern God’s will for our future together. www.holyfaith.org.uk We hope that as many people as possible will participate in these consultations. You will find details in the magazine of a weekend of prayer for the process and deanery meetings to which you are all invited. These meetings are the opportunity for all of us to dream dreams together of where we could be in five years time with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. We want a strategy that will enable the whole diocese to work together, equipping and enabling evangelism and growth in discipleship in all of our local churches. You’ll also find details of Father Ian’s work with our overseas links. I am delighted that they will be praying with us over Pentecost weekend. One of the most moving things following our days of prayer for the diocese back in 2010 was video footage of hundreds of our brothers and sisters praying for and with us in the cathedral in Cameroon. On a personal note, you will find some pictures from my tour around the diocese the day my appointment as Bishop of Lewes was announced. I want to express my thanks for the warmth with which that was greeted and for the many kind cards and notes people have sent me. It is a privilege and a joy to be able to continue ministry here in my diocesan family in Chichester. • Updating Report for SCCA Campaign
Updating Report for SCCA Campaign 2012 proved incredibly important in raising public awareness of the institutional cultures and dynamics that hinder the effective implementation of Child Protection/Safeguarding policies and procedures. The Savile Inquiries, the Rochdale cases and the inquiries and police investigation into child sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy within the Diocese of Chichester all in 2012 raise considerable concerns about how those placed in positions of authority within institutions, local authorities and police services as well as within the wider communities respond to Child Sexual Abuse that is taking place in some cases quite literally before their eyes. The campaign and the Government’s response The Stop Church Child Abuse (“SCCA”) campaign was launched in March 2012. The campaign is an alliance of clergy sexual abuse survivors, charities supporting survivors, specialist lawyers and interested individuals working in the field of child safeguarding. The campaign aims to highlight the serious safeguarding failures of church institutions. The campaign and many individuals have called on the Government to institute an independent inquiry into child sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy, religious and other church officials within all Dioceses and institutions of the Catholic Church in England & Wales and the Church of England and in Wales. Many contacts and letters have passed between the campaign’s supporters and the MPs. The Government response to this pressure has been (quoting from the Education Secretary’s letter of 25th May 2012):- 1) “No child should ever have to tolerate abuse. I am not however convinced of the need for a public inquiry, as the key issues are already being addressed by reforms we have underway.

  • St Nick's News
St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 1 St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 From the Vicar Dear Sisters and Brothers, In this first edition of the parish magazine since our return to worship in church, our editor includes a series of pieces on the experience of ‘coming back’ to St Nick’s. I am very pleased we can share these reflections here, both by way of encouragement for those of you who may be considering a return to church; and also as a historical record of this remarkable period in our history. I struggle to offer a simple vignette from my own experience of ‘coming back’. This is partly because I am still processing the events of the last six months, attempting to comprehend what it means for us to have withdrawn to our homes; to have lived daily in the shadow of this disease, and to have lost our habitual contact with those we love. This all takes time. As a parish priest, I am also still trying to make sense of the complete closure of our church buildings, although this has not happened in many other European countries; and why the clergy have been instructed to abstain from so much pastoral and sacramental ministry, although our own government has designated us as key workers. I will write no more about this here, because my words will be unformed and tinged with frustration. If you are interested in reading a set of critical perspectives more articulate than my own about the current state of the Church of England, you can find some here: https://allthingslawfulandhonest.wordpress.com/ 2 St Nick’s News The Parish Magazine of St Nicholas of Myra, Brighton: Sept 2020 Remaining in the present, I am delighted that we have been able to re- open church, and are now able to come together for worship.
