    General Synod Report for Diocesan Synod Introduction - Lucy Our February group of sessions took place between the 13th – 16th Feb down at Church House in London. Nick (Land) and I both made our maiden speeches successfully without being given the dreaded bell and Linda continued to perfect her chairing skills and even successfully pulled off some humour! No mean feat while sat in the chair! You’ll know from news coverage there was a certain hotly anticipated debate scheduled for the Wednesday but Linda and I will attempt to give you a BBC style, non-biased report of the main events over the course of the week. Anniversary of the Reformation – Linda The Faith and Order Commission of the Church of England with support of the Council of Christian Unity presented this motion in the context of the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the European Reformation and the Church of England’s understanding of the doctrine of justification as expressed in our historic formularies. Archbishop of Canterbury Presidential Address – Linda He stated that we are a cross-shaped people and the time has come to re-imagine our future in light of all the uncertainty of our time. The future offers many opportunities to which we should rise when we find in the country a skills gap, failing NHS and Social Care, and high greenhouse gas emission. The Church could be part of the answer, as we have a deep strong reach into the community recognising as a Church we are also guilty of abuse and we must not resist addressing these appalling matters.

    From the Bishop of Oxford As a Diocese, we are prayerfully seeking the person whom God is calling to be the next Bishop of Dorchester, one of three Area bishops in the Diocese of Oxford. At the heart of our vision we discern a call to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. Most of all we are seeking a new Bishop for Dorchester who will seek to model those qualities and inspire the Church of England across the Dorchester Area to live them out in our daily lives. It was called Mount Docprac because it reminded members of the Catholic Church that the unity between what the Church believed (doctrine) and how that doctrine was lived (practiced) should be as strong as the mountain itself. Over the centuries, Catholics climbed the mountain, doing their best to live faithfully to the teachings of Jesus who gave the mountain to the Church. A few struggled hard and despite many setbacks, they persevered and reached the summit. Others did their best and made some progress and when they failed they started again. The guardians of the mountain, the Pope and the bishops had to be expert climbers because they had to show the way to each new generation of Catholics and find different paths to enable them to succeed. Above all, they had to encourage perseverance, especially in difficult weather conditions. Climbing this mountain was never easy, and when some Catholics lost their tenacity they became frustrated with it. They were influenced by the views of Protestant Christians who no longer had their own mountain because they preferred to live what they thought was an easier life on the flat earth with those who chose for themselves what to believe and how to behave.

Although the publication has been delayed by the pandemic and lockdown, it is a timely reminder both of the importance of thorough research to inform our decision making, and also of the journey we have begun, but certainly not completed, to ensure the flourishing of the ministry of women in the diocese. We are also grateful to Nick Ladd who has acted as a ‘critical friend’ in reviewing the report and giving an external perspective on the questions we need to ask ourselves in the diocese. The report makes for uncomfortable reading. We have come a long way in recent years, but the report highlights how easy it is to become complacent. With the appointment of Bishop Guli, the first ever female bishop in the history of the Diocese of Leicester, and the appointment of Archdeacon Claire, the first ever female archdeacon, and with the Bishop’s Leadership Team nearing a 50/50 split of men and women, it would be easy to assume that we have reached our goal and everything else will automatically fall into place. However, while it is important to celebrate how far we have come, it is also critical to acknowledge the deep pain still being experienced by many in the diocese.

DIOCESAN YOUTH STRATEGY The Chair suspended Standing Orders The Bishop of Chelmsford introduced the item. He recalled his personal experience of youth work in parish ministry. He then introduced Hannah Robinson, Youth Adviser for the Barking Area and Mark Tiddy, Youth Adviser for the Bradwell Area. Hannah Robinson shared a possible vision for the Church, one that was centred on intergenerational ministry. Mark Tiddy went on to explain the journey of the Youth Strategy document: There had been a substantive consultation process including parish surveys, consultation with young people in the Diocese and meetings with various committees. There was a hope to see this strategy put in to practice in every Mission and Ministry Unit and parish. The strategy was grounded in Transforming Presence, aimed at helping young people to grow in faith and to be part of a discipleship journey. 1 The strategy sought to empower young people and support them in their transitions.

The religious and spiritual challenges in the 21st century It is challenging for a religious culture to provide the immediate gratification and answers of technology so embedded in today’s world. Equally the pace of life and often financial pressures place demands on busy family life. In common with many congregations we want to expand the number of families and young people in our churches. In order for our churches to become sustainable worshipping communities that effectively take mission into the local area we need to look at ourselves and identify what we do well and what we are not achieving and why. We need to listen to God, celebrate what is good and play our part in enriching communities. We therefore would welcome the leadership, inspiration and support of a priest to enable and encourage us on this journey. 2.
