Racing Edition 2019 Wine List the Average Racehorse Lives for Around 30 Years, but They Usually Retire Around the Age of 15 Splendid Wines ~ Personal Service Racing Edition 2019 Wine List The average racehorse lives for around 30 years, but they usually retire around the age of 15. Considering that they are athletes, they clearly have a prime, and no horse over the age of 18 has won any races. 2019 Wine List - Racing Edition Thought you may like to see all the racecourse in Yorkshire and the North East. Have you visited them all? Beverley Flat Catterick Mixed Doncaster Mixed Hexham National Hunt Newcastle Mixed Pontefract Flat Redcar Flat Ripon Flat Sedgefield National Hunt Thirsk Flat Wetherby Mixed York Flat Peter Easterby a Yorkshire trainer and customer of Firth & Co is the only trainer to have saddled over 1000 winners in both flat and national hunt racing. His son Tim Easterby has now taken over and is also a customer. Another famous father and son trainer combo, the late great Patrick Haslam and son Ben. Patrick holds the record for having saddled the winner at every racecourse in Britain, that being 1000 winners and he holds the distinction of having trained at Pangbourne, Newmarket and Middleham. Greatly missed. Looking forward to seeing you and hearing from you with your wine and Gin requirements. With very best wishes, Andrew J. Firth FIRTH & CO WINE MERCHANT Lowfield Farm, Ainderby Steeple, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, DL7 9SD Tel: 01609 770875 Email: [email protected] Twitter: @firthandcowine www.firthandco.com Registered No. 6926128 Regardless of when a horse is born, their birth date is universally January 1, to make the process of filtering horses by their age easier. Firth & Co Selection Bottle Bottle Ex. V.A.T. Inc. V.A.T. Sparkling 4914 Prosecco Corderie DOCG Valdobbiadene, Astoria Estate, Veneto, Italy 10.95 13.14 Produced from vineyards on the original family farm at the very heart of Prosecco. The Polegato family are known to only produce wines of the highest order with no compromise in quality. 1501 Crement de Bourgogne, Trenel, Burgundy, France 12.95 14.54 Trenel are one of the most traditional of Burgundy producers, retaining independence and gaining big investment from M. Chapoutier. This Crement is made from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Cöte Chalonnaise. 1016 Chapagne Météyer Brut Tradition, Trélou-sur-Marne, France 19.95 23.94 The first ‘grower Champagne ‘ to be recognised by UNESCO as upholding the traditional values of the region. Franck and wife Anna are the sixth generation to produce Champagne from these vineyards, and it will not disappoint. White 3604 Gassac Classic Blanc 2017, Moulin de Gassac, Languedoc, France 6.95 8.34 A true ‘house wine ‘, made by our good friend Samuel Guibert of Mas de Daumas Gassac fame, in the Pays d’Hérault. A blend of Terret Blanc and Carignan Blanc will please all pallets. 3611 Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Terres Cortal, Languedoc, France 6.50 7.80 In our opinion France produces the very best Sauvignon Blanc. Grown in the far south, this has excellent concentration of fruit without the higher acidities that are often found in the wines from the new world. 4515 Gavi 2018, Tenuta Santa Seraffa, Piedmont, Italy 10.95 13.14 Founded as an estate in the 131h Century, this is a very fine Gavi indeed. The Cortese grape used in Gavi di Gaci is grown in the best hill-side vineyards within the commune. 7504 Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Ata Mara, Marlborough, New Zealand 9.50 11.40 Grown in the premium vineyards of Marlborough, this is definitely a classy Sauvignon Blanc, refinded and fruit driven, with a good length. Up there in quality with much bigger names. 7508 Pinot Gris 2017, Ata Mara, Central Otago, New Zealand 10.95 13.14 Our ‘find of2018 From the most southerly vineyard in the world, in Central Otago - famed for their aromatic wines due to the very slow ripening because of the very cool temperatures so far south. 1524 Macon-Solutre-Pouilly 2017, Domaine de la Chapelle, Burgundy, France 11.95 14.34 The Maconnaise in the south of Burgundy produces a fruitier, more modern style of wine. Domaine de la Chapelle, first tasted by Andrew in Copenhagen, is grown at the foot of the ‘Rock of Solutre ‘. 1523 Petit Chablis 2017, Closerie des Alisiers, Burgundy, France 11.95 14.34 A little fruitier and more modern than from the neighbouring Chablis, but a very approachable, steely dry wine from producer Stephane Brocard. 7007 Spitting Spider Chardonnay 2016, Dowie Doole, McLaren Vale, Australia 7.95 9.54 Dowie Doole are one of the pioneers of McLaren Vale wine. One of their so-called entry-level wines still stands head and shoulder over many other wines from the region. Tropical and unoaked, a really good wine. 5451 Riesling 2017, Von Buhl, Pfalz, Germany 9.95 11.94 Von Buhl have always been among the premier German winemaking estates, even remembering a time when the wines were more sought after than the top wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, 3603 Picpoul de Pinet 2018, Chateau de la Mirande, Languedoc, France 7.95 9.54 Grown overlooking the Mediterranean, this is the finest Picpoul that we have tasted, making the perfect match for seafood. 2505 Sancerre ‘Le Mont Dames’ 2017, Henri Bourgeois, Loire, France 21.95 26.34 From the finest vineyards within Sancerre, fought over for generations. ‘Le Mont Dames ‘ offers more richness and concentration than elsewhere, and are also fully declared Organic. 5512 Babiana 2017, Vondeling, Voor Paardeberg, South Africa 10.95 13.14 A blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Rousanne and Grenache Blanc and then given time in oak to knit the blend together. Full on, new world white that makes a brilliant match for most seafood dishes. 8151 Grüner Veltliner 2017, Sepp Moser, Kremstal, Austria 12.95 15.54 A very traditional producer from Kremstal in Austria, famed for the quality of their Grüner. Bone dry and packed with character. 3627 Viognier 2016, Moulin de Gassac, Languedoc, France 7.95 9.54 Southern French Viognier is one of the real bargains on any wine list. Always bursting with ripe fruit flavours of apricoat and peach with a slight nuttiness 5508 Chardonnay 2017, Hamilton Russell, Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa 22.50 27.00 The best wine producing valley in South Africa. Hamilton Russell are sought after worldwide, renown for their Burgundian style. 4511 Roero Arneis 2017, Bruno Giacosa, Piedmont, Italy 20.95 25.14 One of the best names in Piedmont, famed for their quality and approach to winemaking. Roero Arneis is notoriously difficult to grow, but Bruno has expertly crafted an intense and elegant wine, perfectly balanced with fantastic length and developing flavours. 4505 Orvieto 2017, Argillae, Umbria, Italy 8.95 10.74 One of Umbria‘s best kept secrets. Fresh and dry with flavours of citrus, petals and a touch of tropical fruit. Real artisan production from a very traditional region. Bottle Bottle Ex. V.A.T. Inc. V.A.T. Firth & Co Selection Rosé 3507 Guilhem Rosé 2018, Moulin de Gassac, Languedoc, France 7.50 9.00 Pale and dry - excellent rosé from the very south of France, hints of red fruit, and very, moreish. 3508 Domaine Pontfract 2017, Cotes de Provence, France 10.95 13.14 From one of the smaller, traditional Provence producers. Dry with a crisp minerality, perfect for the summer months on sunshine. 3502 Whispering Angel 2018, Chateau d’Esclans, Cotes de Provence, France 16.95 20.34 One of the most talked about wines of the moment, aiming to become the world’s best rosé. Owned by Sacha Lichine the former owner of Chateau Prieure Lichine in Bordeaux, the estate is really going places, as are the wines. Red 3704 Gassac Classic Rouge 2017, Moulin de Gassac, Languedoc, France 6.95 8.34 ‘House Red’ at its best. Soft, fruity and a real crown pleaser, the entry level wine from the estate known as the ‘Latour of the Languedoc 3498 Chateau Ballan-Larquette 2016, Bordeaux, France 8.50 10.20 Our House Claret at Firth & Co. Régis Chaigne produces this great Bordeaux in the Entre deux Mers in a fruity, youthful style, designed to be drunk young. 5223 Vina Arana Reserva 2011, La Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain 18.50 22.20 Made from the young vines that produce the estates top wine ‘904 ‘ Gran Reserva. This is typical Rioja, smooth, dark fruit with sweet vanilla spice, the quality shines through. 7210 Spitting Spider Shiraz 2016, Dowie Doole, McLaren Vale, Australia 7.95 9.54 Spicy style, showing the fruit better then heavier, jammy shiraz from hotter parts of Australia. Dowie Doole really know how best to show their grapes off. 5702 Pinotage 2017, Southern Right, Walker Bay, South Africa 13.95 16.74 A classically styled wine from a modern grape variety. Slow ripening in a cool climate allows full ripeness and complex flavours to develop within the grapes. 5203 Montebuena ‘Oak Aged’ 2017, Rioja, Spain 7.50 9.00 The oak aging gives this new find a true taste of authentic, traditional Rioja. 4716 Salice Salentino Riserva 2015, Cantele, Puglia, Italy 9.50 11.40 From a tiny appellation in the heel of Italy. Aged in oak to soften and integrate, this is a beautifully rich and intense, without over the top tannin. 4721 Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2015, Geppetti, Tuscany, Italy 15.95 19.14 Made from 100% Sangiovese, which is known as Morellino in southern Tuscany. Similar in style to Chianti, but with a more mineral edge from the more coastal soil and climate. 7202 Young Blood Grenache 2017, Tomfoolery, Barossa, Australia 16.95 20.34 Looks can be deceiving. So light and pale in the glass, yet big and bold, unmistakeably Barossa, in taste.

  • Viewed Below), Which She Describes As 'My Fight to Save the Mauzac!!', Adding That 'If We Do Nothing I’M Afraid Mauzac Will Disappear from Limoux Within 20 Years'
PDF Generated: 2020-07-21 09:11 Original URL: https://www.jancisrobinson.com/articles/languedoc-roussillon-fizz- and-whites-2020 Tamlyn Currin 16 Jul 2020 Languedoc and Roussillon, fizz and whites 2020 The first part of a massive report on current wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: over 180 white and sparkling wines. Reds will follow and rosés will be included in a special tasting article devoted to pink wines from around the world. The gorgeous sketch above is by David Hawson, who did the illustrations for Prue Leith’s cookbook, Prue: My All-time Favourite Recipes, and her range of greeting cards. Inspired by a tasting note for their 2016 Rives-Blanques Occitania Mauzac from Limoux, in which Jancis provocatively described the wine as 'local but civilised', Caryl Panman asked David to turn the tasting note into a picture. This, therefore, is Mauzac, local but thankfully quite civilised. What struck me more than anything else about these wines is how many of them were organic-certified, Haute Valeur Environnementale-certified, or grown using organic practices in the vineyard. A total of 91 in the whites and fizz alone. Not only that, but out of more than 150 boxes of samples delivered to me (for reds, whites and pinks), less than 20 came in polystyrene or plastic sleeves. Every other box contained nothing but completely recyclable cardboard – and there were only two breakages. The other encouraging thing was seeing how few unnecessarily heavy bottles there were, just over 10%. The red wines performed less well in the bottle-weight department and to be fair this is a sustainability marker that could easily be reduced to 0% without risk to wine quality or sales, but if I'd done a Spanish tasting of this scale, it would be a much weightier issue (excuse the pun).

  • WINE Talk: April 2018
Licence No 58292 30 Salamanca Square, Hobart GPO Box 2160, Hobart Tasmania, 7001 Australia Telephone +61 3 6224 1236 [email protected] www.livingwines.com.au WINE Talk: April 2018 The newsletter of Living Wines: Edition 75 Welcome to Edition 75 of Wine Talk. We would like to start by thanking all of you for the immense response to our last shipment. We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm you showed for the wines – especially the offerings from the Jura (more coming soon) and from the immensely talented Alice and Olivier de Moor. We were sorry that we couldn’t supply everyone who wanted the wines but 2016 was a very difficult year in France as you know and there just were not enough to go around. There are two very good events coming up which we have written about in this newsletter. The first is Handmade which is held at the Builders Arms Hotel in Fitzroy every year. We have always participated in this event because it is a very congenial blending of good wines, good friends and good food provided by the talented chefs from this establishment. More details below. And we are also looking forward to the Bottletops event which is held in our home town of Hobart at Franklin Restaurant. Winemakers and importers from all over Australia will be descending on our city for this event and we are looking forward to an exciting weekend to top off the hectic time around the fabulous Dark MOFO event. We have six packs and a secret pack for you again this month.
