  • Music and Traditions of Thrace (Greece): a Trans-Cultural Teaching Tool 1
MUSIC AND TRADITIONS OF THRACE (GREECE): A TRANS-CULTURAL TEACHING TOOL 1 Kalliopi Stiga 2 Evangelia Kopsalidou 3 Abstract: The geopolitical location as well as the historical itinerary of Greece into time turned the country into a meeting place of the European, the Northern African and the Middle-Eastern cultures. Fables, beliefs and religious ceremonies, linguistic elements, traditional dances and music of different regions of Hellenic space testify this cultural convergence. One of these regions is Thrace. The aim of this paper is firstly, to deal with the music and the dances of Thrace and to highlight through them both the Balkan and the middle-eastern influence. Secondly, through a listing of music lessons that we have realized over the last years, in schools and universities of modern Thrace, we are going to prove if music is or not a useful communication tool – an international language – for pupils and students in Thrace. Finally, we will study the influence of these different “traditions” on pupils and students’ behavior.

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

Then Christianity moved to Greece and became a philosophy. Then it moved to Rome and became an institution. Then it moved to Europe and became a culture. And then it move to America and became a business.” - Priscilla Shirer Shaul / Paul went to Greece within the framework of his second and third journeys. It was during a night gourd 49 A.D., when Shaul / Paul, while at Troas of Asia Minor, had a vision in which he saw a man of Macedonia who called him to carry on with his work in the this man’s homeland: Come over into M acedonia, and help us. It is worth noting that this divine intervention, which Shaul/ Paul with his fellow laborers Silas, Titus and Timothy took as an invitation from the Lord to make the message of His Gospel know to that area, was not the first. Their arrival at Troas and, as a consequence, their turn westwards and more specifically to Greece had become manifest on two further occasions during this second journey of Shaul / Paul. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF PAUL 3 On the first occasion, when the left Iconium, they were prevented by the Holy Spirit from turning eastwards, to Asia, and as a result they finally headed for the regions of Phrygia and central Galatia.

  • Macedonian Studies Journal 25 Vlassis Vlasidis Assistant Professor
Macedonian Studies Journal Vlassis Vlasidis Assistant Professor, Department of Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki The First World War has been a major event in the modern history of the Balkans because (i) it created the largest battlefront that the world had seen in the area; (ii) it broke up the Ottoman Empire; (iii) it strengthened nation states; and (iv) it created mil- lions of refugees. In addition, during that time the genocide of the Armenians took place, arguably one of the least known genocides in history. Although heavily destructive the war also created a series of significant socio- economic and infrastructure contributions in the region. The forces that took part in it (En- tente and the Central Powers) inter alia built up new road and rail network; improved the provision of health care; implemented wetland drainage projects and invented new meth- ods of production. It is in this particular context where the first organized military cemeter- ies were built in the Balkans as part of commemorating the glorious people who perished during the war. The purpose of this paper is to document the systematic British program of caring for the war’s dead, as well as of establishing permanent monumental military ceme- teries of World War I in Greece. The first burials of the soldiers of Entente forces took place in Octo- ber 1915 in Thessaloniki, in the area of Zeitinlik, a site next to the Lazaristes’ monastery, which was used as a headquarters camp and a temporary military hospital. There were provi- sional military hospitals in the area, while the catholic cemetery of Saint Vincent and Paul lied nearby as Funeral at the British section of Zeitinlik (Lembet Road) cemetery.

The objectives of this study are to present and examine the position towards the Balkan Wars of a political group, which viewed the world and the Ottoman Empire from a different angle than the traditional Russian political position of the time, and would seize the power only five years later in Russia.

intensified measures in their rationing of consumers' goods. 2. The operations up to nov will have, the following conseguenees: a. The destruction of food suplies will play an important role in breaking the enemy's will to resist. s should be especially con- sidered, therefore, in the operations against the chief ports and the .food stocks of the enemy. The transit of food tbroh rance is to be preventedalso. b. The figit-against tonna in itself, however, cannot have a decisive effe upon te economy o the enemy. In spite of this the at- tacks upon shipping must be continued, not only for their immediate re- sults, but also in order to drive the enemy into convoying and thus to tie up a large amount of shipping space. It will also be important to force the enemy to extend his convoy system over the longest sea-routes possible. c. Aerial minela in is, in agreement between the Commander in Chief, Navy an the Co er in Chief, Air Force, to be extended also to the French Atlantic ports, as far as-seems necessary.* d. Interference with public services (gas, water, electricity) at the climax of the warfare against ritsh economy can have a decisive significance. Measures are to be prepared to accomplish this, as well as countermeasures for the protection of our own public services. e. Coordinated with operations against the economy of the. enemy, acts of sabotage and economic warfare must be employed to a greater ex- tent. mutual coordination of ensive actions by the Navy and Air Force must be assured.

ISSN 2394-7357 International Journal of Novel Research in Civil Structural and Earth Sciences Vol. 7, Issue 1, pp: (17-30), Month: January - April 2020, Available at: www.noveltyjournals.com Historic buildings and urban area revitalisation through placemaking: A case study Samir M. Bagiouk1*, Evina Sofianou2 1,2 School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124, Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract: Urban areas of historical value are spatial structures that express the evolution of the local society and local identity. Urban regeneration strategies are encouraged by local authorities to attract people. The transformation of historic urban buildings and their wider environment through reconstruction and aesthetic investments are some of the regeneration strategies for revenue-generating potential and more sustainable urban forms. Contemporary urban regeneration projects aim to create vital spaces by reintegrating historic complexes and buildings in the city urban fabric and to highlight decayed urban areas and the sense-of-a place. Place-making is an inherently collaborative and inclusive planning approach compared to the envisaged planning model. As a concept it refers to the process of place production aiming to advance the living quality of a space. People are attracted to places which can become focal points of economic, social activity and attractiveness including various functions. The present paper faces an important challenge in the field of sustainable urban heritage regeneration. The paper focuses on a listed building of Xanthi, an urban centre in Northern Greece with rich built heritage. The case study building is the Hadjidakis residence (former Garrison Headquarters). The paper explores a series of issues associated with the regeneration and rehabilitation of abandoned historical buildings and their reintegration in the urban fabric through place-making strategies.
