In all cases, upholding faith and culture was reliant on the quality and centrality of education in the lives of our people. Indeed, the Yeshiva system continues to maintain that very strictly, following an educational methodology which was initiated 200 years ago by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. At the same time, elsewhere in our civil society, there is much talk about the importance of education, but in fact we see a constant degradation in its public status and increasing fragmentation in its implementation. -

Great Jewish Books Course The Vilna Goan and R’ Chaim of Volozhin Rabbi Yechezkal Freundlich (גאון ר' אליהו – A. Vilna Goan – R’ Eliyahu ben Shlomo Zalman Kremer (Gr”a a. 1721 – 1797, born and died in Vilna (capital of Lithuania), which was known at the time as the “Jerusalem of Lita” because of its great Torah scholarship, and he was the undisputed crown jewel. LIVING WITH THE PARSHAH 5778 PARSHAS TAZRIAH - METZORAH By Rabbi Yaakov Feitman, Kehillas Bais Yehudah tzvi We have written here of horrendous recent tragedies and we certainly continue to have the wonderful families in mind in our tefilos. But this week let us speak of the goods things which come out of events which certainly seem to be bad. The reference, of course, is to the laws of negaim or various types of leprosy, as discussed in our two Sedros. Rashi (14:34) tells us that Hashem told Klal Yisrael the amazing news that for all the forty years that we were in the midbar, the then-residents of Eretz Yisrael hid their precious gold in the walls of their houses. When we reclaimed our land, Hashem caused leprosy to afflict those walls so that we would have to destroy them, leading to our exciting discovery of these treasures. But why did Hashem grant us riches in this strange way? The Aruch Hashulchan zt”l explains that it was to teach us that everything Hashem does is for our best. So it was with the sale of Yosef, which seemed at the time to bode only tragedy and hatred, eventually resulted in his becoming the viceroy of Egypt and Klal Yisrael descending and settling there in honor and respect, instead of in chains. This helped develop our identity and kedushah as a nation in Goshen so that we could spiritually survive the long bondage. Furthermore, initially all the negaim represented punishment for various sins. However, once we repented and accepted the will of heaven, it became obvious that Hashem wanted to reward us with great wealth all along. -

Isaac Selter Holiness: A Human Endeavor “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the whole Israelite community and say to them: You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy1.” Such a verse is subject to different interpretations. On the one hand, God is holy, and through His election of the People of Israel and their acceptance of the yoke of heaven at Mount Sinai, the nation attains holiness as well. As Menachem Kellner puts it, “the imposition of the commandments has made Israel intrinsically holy2.” Israel attains holiness because God is holy. On the other hand, the verse could be seen as introducing a challenge to the nation to achieve such a holiness. The verse is not ascribing an objective metaphysical quality inherent in the nation of Israel. Which of these options is real holiness? The notion that sanctity is an objective metaphysical quality inherent in an item or an act is one championed by many Rishonim, specifically with regard to to the sanctity of the Land of Israel. God promises the Children of Israel that sexual morality will cause the nation to be exiled from its land. Nachmanides explains that the Land of Israel is more sensitive than other lands with regard to sins due to its inherent, metaphysical qualities. He states, “The Honorable God created everything and placed the power over the ones below in the ones above and placed over each and every people in their lands according to their nations a star and a specific constellation . but upon the land of Israel - the center of the [world's] habitation, the inheritance of God [that is] unique to His name - He did not place a captain, officer or ruler from the angels, in His giving it as an 1 Leviticus 19:1-2 2 Maimonidies' Confrontation with Mysticism, Menachem Kellner, pg 90 inheritance to his nation that unifies His name - the seed of His beloved one3”. -

Another Case of Historical Censorship at Volozhin or Simply Poor Research? One of the more important sources for the history relating to the famed Volozhin Yeshiva is Moshe Shmuel v’Doro, by R. Moshe Shmuel Shapiro (Shmukler), which is is full of important material on this yeshiva and the related personalities. R. Schapiro also published a monograph on the founder of the Yeshiva, R. Chaim of Volozhin. This work, Toldot Rabbenu Chaim Volozhin, was first published in 1909 in Vilna, republished a year later in Vilna and then published twice in Israel, once in Bnei Brak in 1957 and once in Jerusalem in 1968. Recently, in 2000, Toldot Rabbenu Chaim Volozhin, was republished by R. Schapiro’s descendants. In the 2000 edition of Toldot Rabbenu Chaim Volozhin, R. Schapiro’s descendants include a brief introduction about the history of the book, yet they were unaware of some key facts. First, they claim the book was only published twice, when in fact it was published four times. Additionally, then erroneously note that their edition is the third when in fact it is the fifth. Finally, they claim the first edition was the 1910 edition, when in fact the first edition appeared in 1909. In addition to these three inaccuracies and omissions, there is a much more glaring one; not bibliographical in the abstract, but related to the content of the book – they have left out something which appeared in the earlier editions. In the first (1909) edition, a letter from R. Dr. Abraham Eliyahu Harkavy (1839-1919), a former student at the yeshiva in Volozhin, appears which contains both his warm approval of the book as well as a few comments on the book.
