Goats As Sentinel Hosts for the Detection of Tick-Borne Encephalitis

Voordouw4 Abstract Background: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an important tick-borne disease in Europe. Detection of the TBE virus (TBEV) in local populations of Ixodes ricinus ticks is the most reliable proof that a given area is at risk for TBE, but this approach is time- consuming and expensive. A cheaper and simpler approach is to use immunology-based methods to screen vertebrate hosts for TBEV-specific antibodies and subsequently test the tick populations at locations with seropositive animals. Results: The purpose of the present study was to use goats as sentinel animals to identify new risk areas for TBE in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. A total of 4114 individual goat sera were screened for TBEV-specific antibodies using immunological methods. According to our ELISA assay, 175 goat sera reacted strongly with TBEV antigen, resulting in a seroprevalence rate of 4.3%. The serum neutralization test confirmed that 70 of the 173 ELISA-positive sera had neutralizing antibodies against TBEV. Most of the 26 seropositive goat flocks were detected in the known risk areas in the canton of Valais, with some spread into the connecting valley of Saas and to the east of the town of Brig. One seropositive site was 60 km to the west of the known TBEV-endemic area. -

AlpenBike XVIII „Zermatt - Chamonix“ Trans Wallis: Vom Matterhorn zum Mont Blanc …das Abenteuer Alpen mit dem Mountain-Bike AlpenBike XVIII „Zermatt - Chamonix“ Trans Wallis: Die Strecke führt uns zuerst von Zermatt zum Gornergrat, zurück ins Zermattertal und auf der nördlichen Rhoneseite wieder hinauf ins Lötschental. Nach einem Höhenweg bis kurz vor Leukerbad, kehren wir über Sierre wieder auf die südliche Rhoneseite zurück. Hier führt der Weg schließlich über Verbier bis nach Frankreich: Chamonix mit seinem Mont Blanc ist das eigentliche Ziel unserer Reise. Der Rückweg, an der Trient entlang ins Rohnetal, ist ein lohnenswerter Bonus-Track. Insgesamt bewältigen wir vom 24.07. bis 30.07.2011 374 Km mit 8.895 Hm Auffahrten und 14.195 Hm Abfahrten. Freundliche 7 Grad empfangen uns nach einem üppigen Frühstück im Jägerhof. Der eine Große fährt schon mal mit warmem Flascheninhalt los, der andere Große schüttet sich erstmal die Hälfte des Flascheninhaltes in seine Schuhe. Kann ja nur besser werden! Das berühmteste Dorf der Schweiz ist überlaufen mit japanischen Touristen. Sie haben alle nur das eine Ziel: „Ein Foto vom Matterhorn“. Wir möchten erstmal Höhe gewinnen und schrauben uns langsam Kurve um Kurve, zuerst über Tufteren und Sunegga, dann am Leisee und Mosjesee vorbei, hoch in Richtung Riffelberg. -

Introduction The Valais is the third-largest canton of Switzerland covering 2016 square miles of which only 1107 are productive. It is also a world of its own: it received its name "the valley" from the 100 mile long valley of the Rhone River which has its source above the small town of Gletsch below the highest point of the Furka pass. This main valley is flanked on the north and south side by many of the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps. The northern side toward the Canton of Bern is forbiddingly steep, and the Lotschental and the valley leading to the Leukerbad are the only valleys which branch off on this side while many long and deep valleys branch off on the southern side, e.g. -
