Newton The Evergreen State College N e w t o n | 1 "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." --George Orwell The death of Joseph Stalin left the Soviet Union in a state of dynastic confusion, and the most repressive elements of the society he established remained. After Nikita Khrushchev secured power in the mid-1950s, he embarked on a campaign to vanquish these elements. While boldly denouncing Stalin’s cult of personality and individual authority in his ‘Secret Speech’ of 1956, he failed to address the problems of a system that allowed Stalin to take power and empowered legions of Stalin-enablers. Khrushchev’s problem was complex in that he wanted to appease the entire Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1956 and yet legitimize his position of power. The level of embeddedness of Stalinism in the Soviet Union was the biggest obstacle for Khrushchev. Characterized with the “permanent” infrastructure of the Soviet Union, Stalin’s autocratic rule was intertwined with virtually all aspects of Soviet life. These aspects can be broken down into four elements: Stalin’s status as an absolute champion of Communism, and his cult of personality; the enormous amount of propaganda in all forms that underlined Stalin as the “protector” of the Soviet Union during threat and impact of foreign war, and the censorship of any content that was not aligned with this mindset; the necessity and place of the Gulag prison camp in the Soviet economy, and how it sustained itself; and the transformation of Soviet society into something horrifically uniform and populated with citizens whom were universally fearful of arrest and arbitrary repression. -

Spring 2012 Prof. Jochen Hellbeck [email protected] Van Dyck Hall 002F Office hours: M 3:30-5:00 and by appointment History 510:375 -- 20 th Century Russia (M/W 6:10-7:30 CA A4) The history of 20 th century Russia, as well as the world, was decisively shaped by the Revolution of 1917 and the Soviet experiment. For much of the century the Soviet Union represented the alternative to the West. When the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917 they were committed to remake the country and its people according to their socialist vision. This course explores the effects of the Soviet project—rapid modernization and ideological transformation—on a largely agrarian, “backward” society. We will consider the hopes and ideals generated by the search for a new and better world, and we will address the violence and devastation caused by the pursuit of utopian politics. Later parts of the course will trace the gradual erosion of Communist ideology in the wake of Stalin's death and follow the regime’s crisis until the spectacular breakup of the empire in 1991. Throughout the course, we will emphasize how the revolution was experienced by a range of people – Russians and non-Russians; men and women; artists and intellectuals, but also workers, soldiers, and peasants – and what it meant for them to live in the Soviet system in its different phases. To convey this perspective, the reading material includes a wide selection of personal accounts, fiction, artwork, films, which will be complemented by scholarly analyses. War and Rape, Germany 1945 „Red Army soldiers don't believe in “individual liaisons” with German women‟, wrote the playwright Zakhar Agranenko in his diary when serving as an officer of marine infantry in East Prussia. „Nine, ten, twelve men at a time - they rape them on a collective basis‟. The Soviet armies advancing into East Prussia in January 1945, in huge, long columns were an extraordinary mixture of modern and mediaeval: tank troops in padded black helmets, Cossack cavalrymen on shaggy mounts with loot strapped to the saddle, Lend-Lease Studebakers and Dodges towing light field guns, and then a second echelon in horse- drawn carts. The variety of character among the soldiers was almost as great as their military equipment. There were freebooters who drank and raped quite shamelessly, and there were idealistic, austere Communists and members of the intelligentsia genuinely appalled by such behaviour. Beria and Stalin back in Moscow knew perfectly well what was going on from a number of detailed reports sent by generals commanding the NKVD rifle divisions in charge of rear area security. One stated that „many Germans declare that all German women in East Prussia who stayed behind were raped by Red Army soldiers‟. This opinion was presumably shared by the authorities, since if they had disagreed, they would have added the ritual formula: „This is a clear case of slander against the Red Army.‟ In fact numerous examples of gang rape were given in a number of other reports – „girls under eighteen and old women included‟. -

Classic Poetry Series Anna Akhmatova - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Anna Akhmatova(23 June 1889 – 5 March 1966) Anna Andreyevna Gorenko, better known by the pen name Anna Akhmatova, was a Russian and Soviet modernist poet, one of the most acclaimed writers in the Russian canon. Akhmatova's work ranges from short lyric poems to intricately structured cycles, such as Requiem (1935–40), her tragic masterpiece about the Stalinist terror. Her style, characterised by its economy and emotional restraint, was strikingly original and distinctive to her contemporaries. The strong and clear leading female voice struck a new chord in Russian poetry. Her writing can be said to fall into two periods - the early work (1912–25) and her later work (from around 1936 until her death), divided by a decade of reduced literary output. Her work was condemned and censored by Stalinist authorities and she is notable for choosing not to emigrate, and remaining in Russia, acting as witness to the atrocities around her. Her perennial themes include meditations on time and memory, and the difficulties of living and writing in the shadow of Stalinism. Primary sources of information about Akhmatova's life are relatively scant, as war, revolution and the totalitarian regime caused much of the written record to be destroyed. For long periods she was in official disfavour and many of those who were close to her died in the aftermath of the revolution. <b>Early life and family</b> Akhmatova was born at Bolshoy Fontan, near the Black Sea port of Odessa. -

Lenin's Troubled Legacies: Bolshevism, Marxism, and the Russian Traditions by Vladimir Tismaneanu I will start with a personal confession: I have never visited the real Russia, so, in my case, there is indeed a situation where Russia is imagined. But, on the other hand, my both sisters were born in the USSR during World War II, where my parents were political refugees following the defeat of the Spanish Republic for which they fought as members of the International Brigades (my father, born in Bessarabia, i.e., in the Russian empire, lost his right arm at the age of 23 at the battle of the River Ebro; my mother, a medical student in Bucharest, worked as a nurse a the International Hospital in Barcelona, then, during the war, finished her medical studies at the Moscow Medical School no. 2, where she was a student of one of professor Kogan, later to be accused of murderous conspiracy in the doctors' trial). They all returned to Romania in March 1948, three years before I was born. So, though I never traveled to Russia, my memory, from the very early childhood was imbued with Russian images, symbols, songs, poems, fairy tales, and all the other elements that construct a child's mental universe. My eldest sister was born in Kuybishev (now Samara), where my mother was in evacuation, together with most of the Soviet government workers--she was a broadcaster for the Romanian service of Radio Moscow. My sister was born on November 25th, 1941 in an unheated school building, under freezing temperature, without any medical supplies, food, or milk. -

Rethinking the Postwar Era: Soviet Ukrainian Writers Under Late Stalinism, 1945-1949 by Iuliia Kysla A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Iuliia Kysla, 2018 Abstract This dissertation advances the study of late Stalinism, which has until recently been regarded as a bizarre appendage to Stalin’s rule, and aims to answer the question of whether late Stalinism was a rupture with or continuation of its prewar precursor. I analyze the reintegration of Ukrainian writers into the postwar Soviet polity and their adaptation to the new realities following the dramatic upheavals of war. Focusing on two parallel case studies, Lviv and Kyiv, this study explores how the Soviet regime worked with members of the intelligentsia in these two cities after 1945, at a time when both sides were engaged in “identification games.” This dissertation demonstrates that, despite the regime’s obsession with control, there was some room for independent action on the part of Ukrainian writers and other intellectuals. Authors exploited gaps in Soviet discourse to reclaim agency, which they used as a vehicle to promote their own cultural agendas. Unlike the 1930s, when all official writers had to internalize the tropes of Soviet culture, in the postwar years there was some flexibility in an author’s ability to accept or reject the Soviet system. Moreover, this dissertation suggests that Stalin’s postwar cultural policy—unlike the strategies of the 1930s, which relied predominantly on coercive tactics—was defined mainly by discipline by humiliation, which often involved bullying and threatening members of the creative intelligentsia. -

Checklist of translations of the works of Isaak Babel ΄ (1894-1940) Compiled by Efraim Sicher Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Fourth revised and corrected electronic edition, January 2008 This list of translations into other languages is not exhaustive, but it gives some indication of the reception and fate of Babel in various countries according to the vagaries of changing ideological and commercial climates, or depending on whether Babel could be read as a communist or anti-communist writer. The most spectacular surges of interest followed the fall of communism in eastern Europe in 1989, and in China in 2005-2007, where a Babel fever culminated in conferences in Beijing and Shanghai. Red Cavalry and the Odessa Tales have proved the most enduring works, though not often read in uncensored form. In English the stories have often been anthologized in college readers and Jewish short-story collections, but they are also translated for their interest as an example of the writer's craft. It is noteworthy that Babel collaborated with the first French translation of Red Cavalry and proofread the first ,(Genesis) בראשית ,Hebrew translation of his stories in a short-lived Hebrew communist journal published in the Soviet Union in 1926, but printed in Berlin. And, by chance, the last Soviet edition of Babel's works in fact appeared in Yiddish in Moscow in 1939.
