A quarter of a century later the experience has informed the design of a set of dementia-friendly prefabricated apartments that could soon be erected in Britain. The queen, together with the founder of the Ikea furniture chain, drew up the plans for the first prototypes of low-cost modular flats to ensure that patients and their carers could continue to live in their own homes. 1 The six model apartments in Stockholm are a pilot for a concept that is intended to be spread across Scandinavia and into the UK over the next few years. “In Sweden the number of people aged 80 or over will increase by 85 per cent from 2015 to 2030,” Jonas Spangenberg, chief executive of BoKlok, the building company that made them, said. “Society needs to find a solution where more people can stay at home for longer; and actually people want to stay in their own home. This is also much cheaper for everybody.” The idea emerged several years ago when Ingvar Kamprad, the Ikea billionaire, made a large donation to Queen Silvia’s dementia charity, the Silviahemmet foundation. After some thought the pair decided to spend the money on designing affordable ready-built housing for older couples that could be easily adapted to their needs if one of them were to develop dementia.

The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus.

    Annual Newsletter of the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University LAVIC-EURASIAN ESEARCH NO. 27 ENTER NEWS March 2021 2020 Summer International Symposium “Northeast Asia: Pitfalls and Prospects, Past and Present” On July 2–3, 2020, the Slav- ic-Eurasian Research Center held its international summer sympo- sium on “Northeast Asia: Pitfalls and Prospects, Past and Present.” As a response to COVID-19, the event was held online over Zoom, rather than in person. The first half of the symposium, sessions 1 and 2, were devoted to providing a platform for researchers associ- ated with the NIHU Area Studies Project for Northeast Asia (NoA- SRC) to discuss their findings Zoom symposium outgoing with researchers from overseas, while the latter half, sessions 3 and 4, was turned over to debate among the members of David Wolff’s JSPS project on “Multi-Archival Analysis of Critical Junctures in Post-war Northeast Asia.” With the strategic concerns of the United States and China shifting south, to the In- do-Pacific, the focus of Sessions 1 and 2 was on bringing novel perspectives and shining new light on Northeast Asia as a regional ideal, one which has not been institutionalized in the aftermath of the Cold War. Session 1, on “Bottlenecks to Regional Cooperation,” was divided into two parts. The first of these debated the hard bottleneck of contested sovereignty, and the soft bottleneck represented by the ‘politics of distrust’ in Japan and Korea, which not only poisons international relations between the two countries but also is at the root of many social problems.

Here’s a look at seven powerful queens and in their accomplishments. PUBLIC DOMAIN History WOMEN IN HISTORY | AFRICAN LEGEND Dihya, Berber Warrior Queen Dihya was born into the Jarawa Zenata tribe in the 7th century and eventually ruled a free Berber state in north Africa that stretched from the Aures Mountains to the oasis of Gadames. She is usually described as very tall with a lot of hair, which may mean she wore her hair long and in dread- locks. The Ancient History Encyclopedia says she was a black, African queen who dressed as royals of ancient Numidia in a loose tunic or robe, sometimes belted, with sandals. FIGHTING THE ARABS Dihya was also referred to in Arabic sources as al Kahina, meaning the soothsayer, because of her alleged ability to foresee the future. She fought off the armies of the Umayyad Dynasty, led by Hasan bin al-Nu’man, who marched from Egypt and met her near Meskiana in 698 (modern day Algeria). It’s said she beat him so badly that he fled to Libya for five years. However, Hasan eventually returned and, helped by a captured officer, defeated Dihya near Tabarka in modern Tunisia near the Algerian border. History dis- agrees on whether she died a warrior’s death in battle or took poison to prevent capture, but it likely occurred in the late 690s or early 700s.
