La première concerne la faune et la flore : zoophytes et vers, crustacés, mollusques, poissons, termes particuliers aux espèces marines, reptile et batraciens, oiseaux, cétacés, flore. La seconde traite des hommes, de la mer et des paysages, de la météorologie, des bateaux et de la navigation, des pêches, de la saunerie et de la conchyliculture. Pour chaque terme, l’auteur propose une graphie phonétique, une définition, un contexte d’usage (géographique, social et historique) et autant que faire se peut, des sources bibliographiques. Analyse Malgré les limites fixées par l’auteur, ce travail est très complet pour ce qui concerne les 2000 lexies (environ) qu’il propose. En effet, l’enquête menée par entretiens et recherches documentaires, aboutit à un lexique qui rend compte et illustre remarquablement la vie sociale et quotidienne des « paysans de la mer », de leur environnement naturel et de la façon dont ils l’appréhendent. Les métiers et les techniques sont aussi présentés, de même que les jeux (luette et autres jeux de cartes). Encore, chaque lexie a été étudiée de façon à livrer la parole, l’oralité ou ce que l’auteur nomme le « parlange », ainsi que ses contextes d’usage. Enfin l’auteur conclut justement sur les évolutions de représentations du parler poitevin- saintongeais (« parler pésan »), aujourd’hui essentiellement entendu comme patrimoine, mais qui reste constitutif d’une identité et représentatif des spécificités culturelles d’un pays.     journal of language contact 8 (2015) 36-69 brill.com/jlc French Guianese Creole Its Emergence from Contact William Jennings University of Waikato [email protected] Stefan Pfänder FRIAS and University of Freiburg [email protected] Abstract This article hypothesizes that French Guianese Creole (fgc) had a markedly different formative period compared to other French lexifier creoles, a linguistically diverse slave population with a strong Bantu component and, in the French Caribbean, much lower or no Arawak and Portuguese linguistic influence.The historical and linguistic description of the early years of fgc shows, though, that the founder population of fgc was dominated numerically and socially by speakers of Gbe languages, and had almost no speakers of Bantu languages. Furthermore, speakers of Arawak pidgin and Portuguese were both present when the colony began in Cayenne. Most deal with diachronic considerations. As for the dialect of Saintonge only a few articles are available. This whole area, which until a few generations ago contained a variety of apparently closely related patois or dialects— such as Aunisian, Saintongeais, and others in Lower Poitou— , is today for the most part devoid of them. All traces of a local speech have now’ disappeared from Aunis. And in Saintonge, patois speakers are very limited as to their number even in the most remote villages. The present study consists of three distinct and unequal phases: one pertaining to the discovering and gethering of an adequate sample of Saintongeais patois, as it is spoken today* another presenting a synchronic analysis of its most pertinent features; and, finally, one attempting to interpret the results of this analysis in the light of time and area dimensions.

    Komlos, John; Hau, Michel und Bourginat, Nicolas: An Anthropometric History of Early-Modern France Munich Discussion Paper No. 2003-10 Department of Economics University of Munich Volkswirtschaftliche Fakultät Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Online at https://doi.org/10.5282/ubm/epub.54 The Anthropometric History of Early-Modern France John Komlos, University of Munich In collaboration with Michel Hau and Nicolas Bourguinat, University of Strasbourg French scholars have been in the forefront of anthropometric research ever since Count de Montbeillard recorded his son’s height profile between 1759 and 1777.1 Similarly, Louis René Villermé was the first statistician of public health in the early 19th century, who noted that the height of a population correlated positively with the productivity of the soil: „physical stature is greater, and men grow faster, the wealthier is the country; in other words, misery produces short people, and delays the achievement of final height.“2 In our own time, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, carried on the tradition by being the first historian to examine systematically the geographic variation and the socio-economic correlates of human height in 19th century France. In a series of publications beginning in 1969 he showed, that the physical stature of recruits born in the late 1840s correlated positively with their education and wealth. Illiterates averaged 164.3 cm, while those able to read and write were 1.2 cm taller. Presumably literate men came from wealthier families, and spent more time at education and less at work than did illiterates.3 Although after a hiatus of some two decades considerable research on French 19th century heights continued in the 1990s,4 the anthropometric history of France of the Ancien Régime remains completely uncharted territory.

Napoleon Buonaparte was born at Ajaccio on the 15th of August, 1769. The family had been of some distinction, during the middle ages, in Italy; whence his branch of it removed to Corsica, in the troubled times of the Guelphs and Gibellines. They were always considered as belonging to the gentry of the island. Charles, the father of Napoleon, an advocate of considerable reputation, married his mother, Letitia Ramolini, a young woman eminent for beauty and for strength of mind, during the civil war— when the Corsicans, under Paoli, were struggling to avoid the domination of the French. The advocate had espoused the popular side in that contest, and his lovely and high-spirited wife used to attend him through the toils and dangers of his mountain campaigns. Upon the termination of the war, he would have exiled himself along with Paoli; but his relations dissuaded him from this step, and he was afterwards reconciled to the conquering party, and protected and patronised by the French governor of Corsica, the Count de Marbœuff. It is said that Letitia had attended mass on the morning of the 15th of August; and, being seized suddenly on her return, gave birth to the future hero of his age, on a temporary couch covered with tapestry, representing the heroes of the Iliad.

(Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… 2 Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the process of accent levelling in the Regional French of Alsace and its relationship with the social variables of age, gender, social class, urban or rural origin of speakers and feelings of regional attachment. Accent levelling, which can be defined as the process of speakers abandoning local phonological forms in favour of supralocal variants, has been the focus of much recent sociolinguistic research on British English, French and other languages. Since knowledge of Alsatian (a Germanic language spoken in Alsace) is decreasing, it is possible that the resulting lack of interference between Alsatian and French is leading to levelling of the traditional accent features of Alsatian Regional French. In order to provide data for this research project, sociolinguistic interviews were conducted and written questionnaires used in Strasbourg and in the village of Helsheim (a fictional name used for reasons of confidentiality) with 56 informants. The data obtained were then subjected to quantitative analysis with regard to the linguistic variables of aspirate h (which can be realised as a supralocal zero variant or as a regional [h] variant) and the devoicing of canonically voiced plosives and fricatives (for example, sage pronounced [saʃ]).
