press release Autunno in Musica IVth edition

The French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici 16 – 30 October 2014 . The French Academy in Rome - Villa Medici presents the fourth edition of the festival Autunno in Musica from 16 to 30 October 2014. The festival, created in 2011, aims to celebrate the musical bond between France and Italy. Organized by the French Academy in Rome – which has welcomed composers as fellows since 1803 – Autunno in Musica will enable the public to listen to well-known works, but also to discover lesser known treasures of a musical repertoire closely linked to the history of the Prix de Rome, a distinction awarded to the most talented artists in order to give them the opportunity to perfect their training at the French Academy in Rome. This fourth edition of Autunno in Musica proposes an original sophisticated program with renowned names such as Claude Debussy, Prix de Rome in 1884, as well as lesser-known composers Théodore Dubois or Gaston Salvayre, also winners of the prestigious prize. «Refusés» composers Benjamin Godard, Ernest Chausson and, above all , who in 1905 was only awarded Second Prix de Rome, causing a great controversy, are also represented. Important women composers will be well represented by Nadia Boulanger, Marie Jaëll, Henriette Renié and Cécile Chaminade. The program of this edition revisits a fundamental phase of the cultural and artistic bonds between France and Italy: the beginnings of World War I, whose hundredth anniversary we are celebrating this year. The anxieties and concerns generated by the conflict had a marked effect on several fellows in residence at the French Academy in Rome, veiling their works with melancholy. The year 2014 also celebrates the 250th anniversary of the death of Jean-Philippe Rameau, one of the Enlightenment’s most important composers. Among the many illustrious musicians in the program will be Blandine Rannou, one of the most highly regarded harpsichord players of today, the baroque music ensemble Les Folies françoises, but also young artists such as David Bismuth, one of the most promising pianists of his generation in Europe, Emmanuel Ceysson, young harp soloist in the orchestra of the Opéra de Paris, the Trio Arcadis who won third prize at the International Competition of Chamber Music in and mezzo- soprano Isabelle Druet. As in the previous years, this new edition of Autunno in Musica has been organized in dynamic collaboration with Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française and the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, in partnership with the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, which will host the concert on October 30. The festival opens Thursday, October 16 (presentation of the program at 7.45 p.m., concert 8.30 p.m.) with the concert entitled In the country where war is waged (Au pays où se fait la guerre), with the performances of mezzo-soprano Isabelle Druet, who divides herself between opera, recitals and concerts, and the Quatuor Giardini, made up of David Violi (piano), Pascal Monlong (violin), Caroline Donin (viola), Pauline Buet (cello), committed to the discovery of little-known repertoires. The public can listen to pieces by Nadia Boulanger, Claude Debussy, Gaetano Donizetti, and Gabriel Fauré. Friday, October 17 (presentation of the program at 7.45 p.m., concert 8.30 p.m.) the Trio Arcadis will be on stage for a concert entitled From one postwar period to another. The trio, made up of David Bismuth (piano), Amandine Ley (violin) and Nicolas Saint-Yves (cello), will perform works by Gabriel Fauré, Gaston Salvayre and Ernest Chausson. Saturday, October 18 (presentation of the program at 7.45 p.m., concert 8.30 p.m.) David Bismuth, pianist renowned for his deep luminous sound where the science of architecture blends in perfectly with the poetry of timbre, will perform works by Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, Cécile Chaminade and Marie Jaëll. The protagonist of the concert on Sunday, October 19 (presentation of the program at 5.15 p.m. concert 6.00 p.m.) is Emmanuel Ceysson, who will play works by Carlos Salzedo, Gabriel Fauré, André Caplet and Henriette Renié on the harp, French Romantic instrument par excellence. Wednesday, October 29 (8.30 p.m.) will be the turn of Les Folies françoises with a program entitled Rameau, a gallery of portraits. The quartet, consisting of Arnaud Richard (bass-baritone), Patrick Cohën-Akenine (violin), Christine Plubeau (viola da gamba) and Béatrice Martin (harpsichord), was created in 2000. Their mission is the revival of Baroque music of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. The quartet will perform songs by Jean-Philippe Rameau and Antoine Forqueray for the Rome public. Thursday, October 30 (8.30 p.m.) Autunno in Musica will close with a concert at the Accademia Filarmonica Romana entitled Focus Rameau: the triumph of the harpsichord. Blandine Rannou will be on stage playing the harpsichord, the foremost instrument of XVIIth century Parisian salons, dedicating the entire concert to Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin by Jean-Philippe Rameau.
