Preferred Citation [Item description], [Location within collection organization identified by Collection Number/Series Number/File Unit Number/Item Number], Harry Dring Photographs, 1870-1983, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Provenance Harrison (Harry) Joseph Dring began collecting the photographs and negatives as manager of restoration and maintenance of California's historic ships in 1954. He continued the collection when the ships were turned over to the Golden Gate National Recreation in 1977 and up to his retirement in 1982. He documented this work by photographing or hiring Harry Dring Photographs, P91-015 2 1870-1983 photographers as well as collecting images of the fleet and other non-National Park Service (NPS) historic vessels. These materials were transfered from his office on the Eureka wheelhouse and accessioned into Golden Gate National Recreation Area's museum collections in 1986. The fleet and collection were subsequently turned over to the San Francisco National Maritime Historical Park in 1989. Processing Information Processed by Tami Suzuki. Completed in 10 May 1999 Biography As Ships' Manager and Supervisor of Restoration at Hyde Street Pier under the State of California, Harrison (Harry) Joseph Dring oversaw the ongoing restoration of the museum's historic ship fleet from 1954 to 1982. Dring was responsible for the fleet of historic ships at the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco where he managed the fleets' restoration and maintenance. He documented this work by photographing or hiring photographers as well as collecting images of the fleet and other non-National Park Service (NPS) historic vessels. After doing restoration work on the Balclutha in 1954, Dring became the ship's manager and supervisor of restoration for California's historic ships. He was named "Conservator of Ships" for the NPS in 1977 upon transfer of the fleet to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Scope and Content Note The collection primarily documents the restoration and maintenance of the historic vessels at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park from 1954 to 1982. The bulk of the collection holdings consist of black-and-white photographs and negatives created or collected by the ships' manager Harry Dring from 1957 to 1976. Other items include photo albums and motion picture film. Along with restoration and preservation of the vessels, the collection documents daily activities at Hyde Street Pier. Of particular note are the 1,689 negatives documenting the fleet's restoration and maintenance. Organization Organized into the following series: 1. Negatives, file units 1- 8 as follows: 1.1. Miscellaneous 4.2; 4.10. Oversized; 4.11. Film; 5. Photographs transfered from the Harry Dring textual records, HD 648. The negatives in Series 1 were further organized by item utilizing an existing classification scheme. Series 2 photos are a corresponding subset to the Series I negatives. Arrangement Dring's classification scheme was maintained for the negatives in series 1 and the photograph albums in series 2. The vessels appear to be arbitrarily arranged within this classification scheme. The series 2 albums are arranged by subject. Series 3 photographs were arranged by vessels in albums, then chronologically within the file units. Series 4 photographs were arranged by vessel. ADDENDUM TO STEAM SCHOONER WAPAMA HAER No. CA-67 HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD ADDENDUM TO STEAM SCHOONER WAPAMA HAER No. CA-67 This report is an addendum to a 1 page report previously transmitted to the Library of Congress. Rig/Type of Craft: Steam Schooner Trade: Passenger and freight carriage Principal Dimensions: Length: 216’-11” Gross Tonnage: 945 Beam: 42’-4” Net Tonnage: 524 Depth: 19’ Location: Richmond, California Date of Construction: 1915 Designer: St. Helens Shipbuilding Company Builder: St. Helens Shipbuilding Company Sauvies Island, St. Helens, Oregon Present Owner: United States Department of the Interior National Park Service Present Use: None (Vessel in dry storage) Significance: Shipyards along the coastline of California, Oregon, and Washington built more than two hundred steam schooners. They were descendants of the sailing lumber schooners once common in the area and were conceived and built to serve in the interregional trade that flourished along North America’s Pacific Coast. The men who built them took ADDENDUM TO STEAM SCHOONER WAPAMA HAER No. CA-67 advantage of plentiful timber and built the ships out of wood, long after builders in most of the Western world had shifted to iron and steel construction. These wooden ships were a mainstay of the coastwise carrying trade for decades. WAPAMA is the sole survivor of the once numerous class. Researcher: Marc R. Porter, 2001 Project Information: This project is part of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) Eric DeLony, Chief, a long-range program to document historically significant engineering and industrial works in the United States. NPS Form 10-900 USDI/NPS NRHP Registration Form (Rev. 8-86) OMB No. 1024-0018 WAPAMA (STEAM SCHOONER) Withdrawal Report United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Registration Form NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK DE-DESIGNATION REPORT WAPAMA (Steam Schooner) Designated: April 20, 1984 Location: Pieces of the ship are preserved and interpreted at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (NHP) in San Francisco, California. Owner: Craig Kenkel (415) 561-7006 San Francisco Maritime NHP Fort Mason Center, Building E San Francisco, CA 94123 SHPO Contact: Carol Roland-Nawi (916) 445-7053 Office of Historic Preservation Department of Parks and Recreation 1725 23rd Street, Suite 100 Sacramento, CA 95816 Justification for Withdrawing Landmark Designation: The Wapama has ceased to meet the criteria for designation because the qualities which originally led it to be designated have been destroyed [36 CFR 65.9 (b)(1)]. Significance of the Landmark: Launched in 1915, the wooden-hulled Wapama is the last survivor of the approximately 235 steam schooners that served the Pacific Coast lumber trade in the 19th and 20th centuries. These vessels formed the backbone of maritime trade and coastal commerce, ferrying lumber, general cargo, and passengers. A high superstructure on the stern and a high forecastle on the bow are distinctive features of Wapama. The masts and spars support booms for loading and off-loading cargo. Its powerful winches were designed to allow Wapama to load and off-load by herself without the use of shore cranes. The ability to do this was an asset in the lumber trade, where ports were primitive and lacked shore facilities for cargo loading.
