Ihsan Ali-Fauzi Religion, Politics, and Violence In Indonesia: Learning From Banser's Experience Abstraksi: Menyusul tumbangnya rezim Orde Barupada lgg7,Indonesia menyaksikan munculnya kelompok-kelompok paramiliter yang terlibat dalam berbagai tindakan kekerasan. Dan salah satunya yang fenomenal adalah Barisan Ansor Serbaguna (Banser), sebuah organisasi paramiliter di bawah payung Geraknn Pemudn Ansor (GP Ansor), sayap pemuda Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Nama Banser mulni mencuat pada awal Februari 2001 ketika Presiden Abdurrnhman Wahid, yang jugn mantan Ketua NLl, mengancam akan mengeluarknn dekrit bahwa negara dnlamkeadaan bahaya. Meski tnnpa dukungan sebagian besar menteri di kabinet dan komandan militer, Wahid mengingatkan bahwa din akan menggunaknn Banser untuk mengnmanknn keputusannya. Pada Agustus di tahun yang sama, Wnhid memenuhi janjinya. Namun keputusan ini gagal. Kekuatan oposisi yang menentang keputusan tersebut terlalu kuat untuk dihadapi kelompok paramiliter ini. Satu hal yang bisa dilakuknn Banser adalah membentuk pengawalan penghormatnn pada saat Presiden Wahid dan keluarganya meninggalkan istana. Sejarah Banser bisa ditelusuri ke asal-usul organisasi payungnya, CP Ansor yang berdiri pada 1931. Dalam Kongres ke-9 Nll pada 1934, Ansor Nahdlatul Ulama ANU) diakui secara resmi sebagai bagian dari Departemen Pemuda NU. Dan, dalam Kongres ke-2 ANU pada 1934, Barisan Ansor Nahdlatul Ulnma (Banu), yang menjadi cikal bakal Banser, dip erkenalknn. P sda masa pendudukan I ep ang, AN I,l menj adi elemen penting dalam Hizbullah, organisasi militer pemuda Muslim yang didirikan pada akhir 1944. Keterlibatannya dnlam perang kemerdekaan berlanjut ketika Belanda melqncarkan Agresi Militer I dan II (20luli 1947 dan 18 Desember 1948). Sementara sebagian anggotanya bergabung dengan Hizbullah, sebagian di antaranya terlibat mempertahankan NLI melawan ngitasi PKI selams Peristizua Madiun 7948. Pada akhir 1949, ANU merestrukturisasi 417 Studia Islamikn, Vol. 15,.No. 3,2008 418 lhsanAli-Fauzi organisasinya, dan kemudian (14 Desember 1949) berubtth nama meniadi Geraknn Pemuda Ansor (CP Ansor). Artikel ini menghadirkan kajinn historis di balik pendirian Banser sebagai organisasi paramiliter dan kemudian bagnimana ia berkembang' Karakter institusional organisasiiniyangberpennmpilanpnramiliter berikut justifiknsi agama membuatnya berbeda dari orgnnisnsi paramiliter lain di Indonesia. Artikel ini juga mendiskusikan titik menentukan sejarah Banser melalui keterlibatannya dalam pembunuhan masal PKI dan sekutunya pada 1965 dan 1966, juga peranannya dalam periode singknt mnsa jabatan Wahid, ketika Banser menjadi "tentarn" loyalis Wahid. Sejarah Banser memang memperlihatkan upaya untuk menggunakan kekerasan demi melayani kepentingan politik. Dalam konteks inilah, dua asumsi tentang relasi antarakekernsan,pllitik, dan agama, dibuat: kekerasan penting untuk mencapai tujuan politik; dan kekerasnn dnpat dikontrol secara agama. Didirikan untuk mempertahankan, memperluas, dan menjadi garda depan bagi kepentingan-kepentingan Muslim Indonesia sebagaimana diinterpretasikan pimpinan NU, keberadaan Banser terkait dengan aparat keamanan negara yang tak mampu atau tnk mau memonopoli penggunaan kekerasan sehingga ada runng dan kesempatan bagi orgnnisasi pararuiliter untuk beropernsi. Yang mengheranknn, di bnnyak keterlibatan historisnya, penggunaan kekerasan oleh Banser tidak pernnh dipertanyakan: dilihat sebagai kebutuhan untuk mencapai tuiuan-tujuan politik dan dianggnp dapnt dikontrol. Baru belakangan ini mulai muncul suara dari bebernpa pemimpin NIJ yang menganjurkan melarang Banser karena dianggnp telah melestarikan subkultur keker asan. Banser makin kuat saat kep entingan politik yang disandarkan padnny a-dengan penggunaan keker asan-semakin besar. D an, akibatny a, Banser semakin dikontrol. Kini, Banser melampaui peran tradisionalnya sebagai pembela kepentingan NU. Ia mentransformasikan dirinya ke dalam sesuntu yang lnin, bahknn tidak jarang ke dalam kekuatan ynng menjunl jasa kekerasnn. Dari studi kasus Banser, upaya memisahkan agama dari politik tidnklah selalu berguna, jika bukan keliru. Alih-alih memisahkan keduanya, Banser mengisyaratknn memperkuat hubungan agama dnn politik. Dalam kasus Abdurrahman Wahid, misalnya, tidak aknn pernnh bisa dipisahknn secara jelas, dan knpan, seseorang adalah politisi yang menSSunakan baju kini atau sebaliknya. Sejarah Banser menunjukkan bahwa dalam campuran politisi dan ngamawnn, yang pertama senantiasn lebih menentukan dalnm pembuatan keputusan dibanding y ang terakhir.     Key Issues in Religion and World Affairs Interfaith Relations in Contemporary Indonesia: Challenges and Progress Hans Abdiel Harmakaputra PhD Student in Comparative Theology, Boston College I. Introduction In February 2014 Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) published a report concerning the rise of religious intolerance across Indonesia. Entitled Indonesia: Pluralism in Peril,1 this study portrays the problems plaguing interfaith relations in Indonesia, where many religious minorities suffer from persecution and injustice. The report lists five main factors contributing to the rise of religious intolerance: (1) the spread of extremist ideology through media channels, such as the internet, religious pamphlets, DVDs, and other means, funded from inside and outside the country; (2) the attitude of local, provincial, and national authorities; (3) the implementation of discriminatory laws and regulations; (4) weakness of law enforcement on the part of police and the judiciary in cases where religious minorities are victimized; and (5) the unwillingness of a “silent majority” to speak out against intolerance.2 This list of factors shows that the government bears considerable responsibility. Nevertheless, the hope for a better way to manage Indonesia’s diversity was one reason why Joko Widodo was elected president of the Republic of Indonesia in October 2014. Joko Widodo (popularly known as “Jokowi”) is a popular leader with a relatively positive governing record. He was the mayor of Surakarta (Solo) from 2005 to 2012, and then the governor of Jakarta from 2012 to 2014. People had great expectations for Jokowi’s administration, and there have been positive improvements during his term.     ISSN 2685-2403 MEDIO Vol 2, No 1, July 2020, pp. 37-61 The Construction of Mass Organization Publication in Islamic News Portals Dwi Latifatul Fajri1, Agus Triyono2 Abstract The issuance of the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 2, the Year 2017 on the Mass Organization, has gained several pros and cons before its legal verification. One of the most significant applications of the regulation is in the disbandment of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia without undergoing legal process due to the renewal of regulation, namely the contrario actus principle. The news on mass organization regulation also becomes the highlight of Islamic news portals, namely Eramuslim.com, Nu.or.id, and Hidayatullah.com. The three portals are chosen for the study due to their frequent published news on the mass organization and their position at the top ranks for the most-visited news portal (Alexa.com). Despite being the same Islamic-based media, the three portals have distinctive news framing. This study applied the framing analysis model by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The Nu.or.id reported there was much support for the issuance of the mass organization regulation based on the religious context, and many sides are against the peaceful action of 299. Hidayatullah.com claims that the regulation has discriminated against and limited the freedom of speech of mass organizations. Lastly, Eramuslim.com views regulation as a political tool used by the government. Based on Golding and Murdock, Hidayatullah.com and Nu.or.id have organizational interests to carry on their news; therefore, it shows an apparent tendency to take sides.

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT As a multicultural country, the opportunities for clashes and conflicts in Indonesia are widely open. The plurality and heterogeneity of Indonesian society is reflected in multiple cultures, religions, and lifestyle diversity. In the national history of Indonesia, various inter-religion conflicts occurred in Poso in 1998 and Ambon in 1999 and others. There are uncountable casualties and material losses in the conflicts. Many conflicts with the religious flags have led Synod of Churches in North and Central Sulawesi to spearhead the Peace Love Movement as an interfaith movement. The Synod Am/SAG houses 13 other churches. The movement pioneer by the Synod Am/SAG later became a pioneer in building public awareness that despite our society is diverse, we are one nation. Therefore, it was initiated the School of Pluralism in 2014, the school that educates the interfaith youth through class encounter classes. It was held one week. This pluralism school is held annually. Based on the above background, the researchers are interested in examining the role of Pluralism School alumni in maintaining religious harmony in North Sulawesi.     (Un)Civil Society and Political Change in Indonesia (Un)Civil Society and Political Change in Indonesia provides a critical ana- lysis of Indonesia’s civil society and its impact on the country’s democratiza- tion efforts that not only takes the classical, pro-democratic actors of civil society into account but also portrays uncivil groups and their growing influ- ence on political processes. Beittinger-Lee offers a revised categorization of civil society, including a model to define the sphere of ‘uncivil society’ more closely and to identify several subcategories of uncivil society. This is the first book to portray various uncivil groups in Indonesia, ranging from vigilantes, militias, paramilitaries, youth groups, civil security task forces and militant Islamic (and other reli- gious) groups, ethnonationalist groups to terrorist organizations and groups belonging to organized crime. Fatkhan [email protected] Abstract This paper seeks to see nationalism among Banser in Magelang District. In the historical record, Multiple Ansor Movement of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) nationalism is undoubtedly, among other things how Banser secures Pancasila and actively participates with society and government in maintaining the unity and defending NKRI. History has proven post-G 30 S / PKI eruption, GP. Ansor and Banser have been instrumental in the G.30.S / PKI crackdown. Ansor Multipurpose Group is the core force of Ansor Youth Movement as a cadre of movers, caretakers and security of social programs of Ansor Youth Movement. The aforementioned cadres are members of the Ansor Youth Movement that have qualifications: Discipline and high dedication, strong physical and mental resilience, mental and religious as the bastion of the ulama and can realize the ideals of Ansor Youth Movement and the common good. Based on the results of this study found that the attitude of Banser nationalism in the willingness to sacrifice can be realized by helping friends and others with sincerity without expecting any reward, able to prioritize the public interest rather than personal interests, and willing to defend the nation and state. In the context of Diklatsar Banser, there is a great need for awareness to raise citizens who are dedicated to the nation and state. This article discusses Islamic radicalism in Palu City, networks and political alliances, as well as people's responses to their existence. This paper is limited to two main problems; first, how radical Islamic political activities and alliances in the city of Palu, second, how the community's response to the radical Islamic network. In network theory there are two important elements that can or can influence a change in society, namely first, culture, and secondly the process of socialization that internalizes norms and values into actors. Normatively, what unites people together is a group of shared ideas. So the position of religious leaders in one community in socio-religious life has never been rivaled, in uniting and building communities in the surrounding environment. In that context, religious issues, religious attitudes are also used as jargon to build practical political alliances.
