ISSN 2685-2403 MEDIO Vol 2, No 1, July 2020, pp. 37-61 The Construction of Mass Organization Publication in Islamic News Portals Dwi Latifatul Fajri1, Agus Triyono2 Abstract The issuance of the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 2, the Year 2017 on the Mass Organization, has gained several pros and cons before its legal verification. One of the most significant applications of the regulation is in the disbandment of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia without undergoing legal process due to the renewal of regulation, namely the contrario actus principle. The news on mass organization regulation also becomes the highlight of Islamic news portals, namely Eramuslim.com, Nu.or.id, and Hidayatullah.com. The three portals are chosen for the study due to their frequent published news on the mass organization and their position at the top ranks for the most-visited news portal (Alexa.com). Despite being the same Islamic-based media, the three portals have distinctive news framing. This study applied the framing analysis model by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The Nu.or.id reported there was much support for the issuance of the mass organization regulation based on the religious context, and many sides are against the peaceful action of 299. Hidayatullah.com claims that the regulation has discriminated against and limited the freedom of speech of mass organizations. Lastly, Eramuslim.com views regulation as a political tool used by the government. Based on Golding and Murdock, Hidayatullah.com and Nu.or.id have organizational interests to carry on their news; therefore, it shows an apparent tendency to take sides.

Using an interpretive framework derived from social movement theory and identity politics, this study exposes the roots of the group and its transformation into a militant, jihadist movement. Based on extensive fieldwork, numerous interviews and a study of the movement’s literature, this study demonstrates that the very existence of Laskar Jihad cannot be dissociated from Saudi Arabia’s immensely ambitious global campaign for the Wahhabization of the Muslim umma.

Acknowledgements A great number of individuals deserve thanks for the support, guidance, insight, and friendship they provided to me throughout this project. My first debt of gratitude is to the former political prisoners, children and grandchildren of former political prisoners, and activists in Jogjakarta who opened their doors to me, welcomed or tolerated my questions, and shared their thoughts and experiences with me; I am admiring of their courage, resilience, and spirited engagement with the complexities and contradictions of their experiences. I would certainly not have made it this far without the love and unflagging support of my family. My parents, Harriet and Henry Conroe, got the ball rolling many years ago through their encouragement, love of learning, and open-mindedness about their son’s international peregrinations. I’ve been lucky to have my brothers, Gabriel and Daniel Conroe, with whom to share adventures, stories, and music over the years. Jack Wittenbrink provided my teenaged self with a first glimmer of understanding of ethnographic sensibilities and the joys of feeling out-of-place. Elizabeth Nicholson’s accounts of shadow puppet theater and komodo dragons first turned my eyes and ears and thoughts in the direction of Indonesia.

This encourages the Youth Movement of Nahdlatul Ulama (Ansor-Banser) to play an important role in mainstreaming moderate Islam and religious tolerance. Among the research questions asked are how the role of Ansor-Banser in countering religious radicalism?; and how the concept and strategy of Ansor-Banser in mainstreaming moderate Islam in Indonesia.?By using sosiological theory and historical approach, the findings of this research show that Ansor-Banser has three important roles in countering religious radicalism. Firstly, the role in maintaining security and public order with the government apparatus in particular at religious ceremony both organized by muslim community and non muslim. Secondly, the role in reviewing and monitoring the activities of individuals or groups of radical religious dissemination. Thirdly, the role in educating moderate religious values on the younger generation through training activities. Therefore, this research also aims to be a reference in formulating strategic steps for stakeholders especially muslim youth organization to maintain moderate religious understanding and forming religious behavior by relying on Islamic values of tasamuh, tawasuth and tawazun. RESPONSE Executive Summary Muhammadiyah, founded in 1912, is the second largest Muslim organisation in Indonesia after Nadhlatul Ulama (NU). It is modernist (in the sense that it favours reform of Islam through a return to the authority of the qur’an and sunnah and modern educational methods) in its approach to Islam, and its founder Ahmad Dahlan “advocated the purification of Islamic thought and practice, the defence of Islam against its critics, and the promotion of these aims through a modernised system of Islamic education”. Muhammadiyah is considered the more conservative of the two organisations, as NU is “regarded as more liberal, tolerant, and comfortable with the idea of a secular state, as well as with syncretic patterns of Islam”.
