Preface: Research Setting and Methods I arrived in Jogjakarta, Central Java in March 2005 with a broad research agenda, intending to carry out fieldwork on the links between agency, political activism, and constructions of generational identity in contemporary urban Indonesia. Stemming from my pre-dissertation research on student activism, my friendship and acquaintance with many university students from my previous stays in Jogjakarta, and Jogjakarta’s reputation as a center of youth culture, my initial plan was to focus upon various student activist groups. Upon arriving in Jogjakarta, I rented what I thought would be temporary accommodations in Nologaten, an area on the eastern side of the city along the road to the airport. (As it turned out, I stayed in my rented house in Nologaten for the full fourteen months of my first fieldwork trip.) Nologaten sits in close proximity to the small Ambarukmo Palace and (now-closed) Ambarukmo Hotel, both belonging to the Sultan of Jogjakarta. Until the mid-1980s, the neighborhood was a quiet collection of homes set amongst bamboo groves, considered a “backwater” compared to the more affluent housing complex within the grounds of the Ambarukmo. In recent years, however, the neighborhood has become a densely-populated area of lower-middle-class homes, kos (student boarding houses), and small shops and food stalls. At the time of my fieldwork, the character of the neighborhood was changing rapidly due to the opening of the giant #"""! ! “Plaza Ambarukmo” shopping mall right at its doorstep.     The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics The Indonesian term adat means ‘custom’ or ‘tradition’, and carries connotations of sedate order and harmony. Yet in recent years it has suddenly become associated with activism, protest and violence. Since the resignation of President Suharto in 1998, diverse indigenous communities and ethnic groups across Indonesia have publicly, vocally, and sometimes violently, demanded the right to implement elements of adat in their home territories. This book investigates the revival of adat in Indonesian politics, identifying its origins, the historical factors that have conditioned it and the reasons for its recent blossoming. The book considers whether the adat revival is a constructive contribution to Indonesia’s new political pluralism or a divisive, dangerous and reactionary force, and examines the implications for the development of democracy, human rights, civility and political stability. It is argued that the current interest in adat is not simply a national offshoot of international discourses on indigenous rights, but also reflects a specifically Indonesian ideological tradition in which land, community and custom provide the normative reference points for political struggles. Whilst campaigns in the name of adat may succeed in redressing injustices with regard to land tenure and helping to preserve local order in troubled times, attempts to create enduring forms of political order based on adat are fraught with dangers. These dangers include the exacerbation of ethnic conflict, the legitimation of social inequality, the denial of individual rights and the diversion of attention away from issues of citizenship, democracy and the rule of law at national level. Overall, this book is a full appraisal of the growing significance of adat in Indonesian politics, and is an important resource for anyone seeking to understand the contemporary Indonesian political landscape.

    ANNUAL REPORT 2006 The International Writing Program at The University of Iowa 1 Greetings, I am pleased to send you the annual report of the International Writing Program (IWP), which for nearly forty years has offered a unique residency for professional writers from around the world. The literary community created by the IWP, a community of poets, fiction writers, essayists, playwrights and screenwriters from more than 120 countries, stands as a testament to the myriad ways in which service to the word, in every language, can help to bridge differences between peoples and nations divided. Only connect—the governing idea of the program—means that we devote the fall to connecting writers to readers, translators, students and people from every background. And this report offers a glimpse into some of the connections that last year’s writers made. I am also pleased to tell you that the IWP is evolving in a dynamic fashion. In 2006 we hosted our first symposium on the Greek island of Paros, bringing together writers from every corner of the earth to discuss what we hold in common. A Greek film maker made a documentary about the symposium and an e-book of the essays written for the occasion is in the works. As I write these lines we are preparing not only for another symposium, on the subject of justice, but also for a tour of the Middle East designed to introduce some of America’s most prominent writers to their counterparts in Syria, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. In the spring of 2008, in partnership with the University of Iowa’s Young Writers Studio, we will launch a project called Between the Lines, bringing a dozen high school students from six Arabic-speaking countries to take part in a summer writing workshop, which we expect to deepen our connection to this strategic part of the world, creating new networks of writers and readers.

It depicts the various cultures and ethnicities that live together in Semarang. However, this city branding is considered insufficient to meet the tourism target. This research aims to develop a new branding for Semarang as a Cinematic City. This concept is derived from the success of several cities which famous as shooting locations, for example Oxford in England, Seoul in South Korea, and New Zealand as the filming sites of The Lord of the Rings. The main aim of this research is to map out the potential locations for Semarang’s new branding as a Cinematic City. This research is conducted for three popular movies: Gie, Ayat-Ayat Cinta and Soekarno which those movies used Semarang City as the major filming sites. The result found there are three separated areas in Semarang that can be built as the main points of the city branding. Specifically located in the Old Town District there are Srigunting Park, State Financial Building, Cockfighting site, Berok Bridge, Blenduk Church, Jakarta Lloyd Building, and Berok River. In total, there are nine locations that can be developed as a tourism hub which served as a brand attributes of the effort to construct a Semarang as a Cinematic City.

One of the most significant applications of the regulation is in the disbandment of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia without undergoing legal process due to the renewal of regulation, namely the contrario actus principle. The news on mass organization regulation also becomes the highlight of Islamic news portals, namely Eramuslim.com, Nu.or.id, and Hidayatullah.com. The three portals are chosen for the study due to their frequent published news on the mass organization and their position at the top ranks for the most-visited news portal (Alexa.com). Despite being the same Islamic-based media, the three portals have distinctive news framing. This study applied the framing analysis model by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The Nu.or.id reported there was much support for the issuance of the mass organization regulation based on the religious context, and many sides are against the peaceful action of 299. Hidayatullah.com claims that the regulation has discriminated against and limited the freedom of speech of mass organizations. Lastly, Eramuslim.com views regulation as a political tool used by the government. Based on Golding and Murdock, Hidayatullah.com and Nu.or.id have organizational interests to carry on their news; therefore, it shows an apparent tendency to take sides.

But we must quickly add that the Chinese in post-1998 films formal ending of the New Order that year is neither the sole nor the most important cause of the change. This is not an easy question to answer. Whether "formulated" or not, the creative process is always a very private and personal experience. Each writer will have his own ex­ perience, again whether "formulated" or not. I've been asked to detail the creative process which produced the novels Perburuan [The Fugitive] and Keluarga Gerilya [Th e Guerrilla Family]. Very well. I'll answer— even though there's no real need for other people to know what goes on in my private kitchen. My willingness to respond in this instance is based purely on the public's right to some comparisons . to limit undue onesidedness. 1948. I was 23 at the time— a pemuda who believed wholeheartedly in the nobil­ ity of work— any kind of work— who felt he could accomplish^ anything, and who dreamed of scraping the sky and scooping the belly of the earth: a pemuda who had only just begun his career as a writer, publicist, and reporter. As it turned out, all of this was nullified by thick prison walls. My life was regulated by a schedule determined by authorities propped up by rifles and bayonets. Forced labor outside the jail, four days a week, and getting cents for a full day's labor. Not a glimmer of light yet as to when the war of words and arms between the Re­ public and the Dutch would end.
