Diakhir era Orde Baru, Pemuda Pancasila mulai merubah citra kekerasan didalam ormasnya. Memasuki era Reformasi, Pemuda Pancasila mulai menghilangkan citra negative didalam ormasnya, mereka mulai melakukan kegiatan social dan kemasyarakatan di Indonesia, namun, pasca Reformasi ini, Pemuda Pancasila masih saja menunjukkan sifar represif didalam ormasnya dengan cara konflik- konflik antar ormas kepemudaan diberbagai wilayah di Indonesia. PART TWO 1800–2005: CHRONOLOGICAL AND REGIONAL SURVEYS K.A. Steenbrink and J.S. Aritonang - 9789047441830 Downloaded from Brill.com09/28/2021 03:57:14AM via free access CHAPTER SIX 1800–2005: A NATIONAL OVERVIEW Th e Colonial era: 1800–1900 State, church, and missionary societies At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the political and religious situation in Indonesia had undergone signifi cant changes compared with the preceding centuries. As of 31 December 1799, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was declared bankrupt and its assets were taken over by the Dutch State. As the Netherlands had allied itself with France, during the next years all Dutch overseas possessions were lost to the English. But aft er peace had been restored (1815) the territory of what nowadays is Indonesia was restored to the newly established Kingdom of the Netherlands. Th e Dutch left the existing admin- istrative structure in the overseas territories more or less intact, but from now on government policy in the Indies was no longer determined by a body of merchants but by the Dutch Crown and, aft er 1849, increasingly by Parliament. Correspondingly, it was no longer focused on trade alone, but became more and more guided by territorial and, as the century wore on, to some degree by modern ‘humanitarian’ ambitions. During the nineteenth century, many regions of the Netherlands East Indies, as the remaining Dutch colonial pos- sessions in Asia came to be called, were not yet eff ectively controlled by the colonial government. In several regions dominated by Islam, Dutch occupation was opposed in prolonged freedom wars.

Generating History: Violence and the Risks of Remembering for Families of Former Political Prisoners in Post-New Order Indonesia by Andrew Marc Conroe A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Anthropology and History) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Professor E. Webb Keane Jr., Chair Professor Nancy K. Florida Professor Rudolf Mrazek Professor Andrew J. Shryock ! © Andrew Marc Conroe _________________________ 2012 For Karen ""!! Acknowledgements A great number of individuals deserve thanks for the support, guidance, insight, and friendship they provided to me throughout this project. My first debt of gratitude is to the former political prisoners, children and grandchildren of former political prisoners, and activists in Jogjakarta who opened their doors to me, welcomed or tolerated my questions, and shared their thoughts and experiences with me; I am admiring of their courage, resilience, and spirited engagement with the complexities and contradictions of their experiences. I would certainly not have made it this far without the love and unflagging support of my family. My parents, Harriet and Henry Conroe, got the ball rolling many years ago through their encouragement, love of learning, and open-mindedness about their son’s international peregrinations. I’ve been lucky to have my brothers, Gabriel and Daniel Conroe, with whom to share adventures, stories, and music over the years. Jack Wittenbrink provided my teenaged self with a first glimmer of understanding of ethnographic sensibilities and the joys of feeling out-of-place. Elizabeth Nicholson’s accounts of shadow puppet theater and komodo dragons first turned my eyes and ears and thoughts in the direction of Indonesia.

BUYING VOTES IN INDONESIA PARTISANS, PERSONAL NETWORKS, AND WINNING MARGINS Burhanuddin Muhtadi February 2018 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University Ⓒ Copyright by Burhanuddin Muhtadi 2018 All Rights Reserved i STATEMENT OF ORIGINALITY This dissertation is the result of original research and contains no material which has been accepted for the award or any other degree or diploma at any university or other institution. To the best of my knowledge, it contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made in the text of the dissertation. 15 February 2018 Burhanuddin Muhtadi ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation formally started when I was enrolled as a PhD student at the Department of Political and Social Change, Australian National University (ANU) in April 2013. Its actual genesis, however, dates back to a workshop in Bali co- sponsored by The Centre for Democratic Institutions, ANU, and Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD), on 12–13 December 2011. Entitled “Money Politics, Vote Buying and Clientelism in Southeast Asia,” the workshop was initially aimed to design a cross-national study of money politics in Southeast Asia. A common lament voiced by most participants was that, despite vote buying having become central to electoral campaigns in Southeast Asian countries, particularly in Indonesia, most influential studies on clientelism have emerged from other world regions. This study therefore aims to fill the gap in the scholarship on electoral clientelism in Indonesia and to situate my findings about that country within the context of the wider academic literature on the field.

"Kita bicara adat Batak dong.
