Particullarry the ski areas near the frontier to Italy and Austria were bring modernized and enlarged. Slow Tourism is the aim. Text: Ski resort Kanin Music that everybody knows - Slavko Avsenik and his original Oberkrainer. The popular folk musician comes from, you might have guessed it, the Slovenian region of Oberkrain, near the border to Italy and Austria. This region wants to get more attention by investing in winter tourism. There is another, relatively unknown ski resort in the national park of Triglav. The overcast mount Vogel is also known for the fact that snow is always guaranteed. However: one day lift ticket costs about 20 euro, and an overnight stay costs about 60 euro – prices in Slovenia are like the prices in German ski resorts. Iztok Altbauer, head of marketing of the Slovenian tourist office, therefore has to come up with new things and count on family friendliness and quality. However, in order to do that, money is needed. He intends to get this money with the help of local industries. Quote Iztok Altbauer, - Head of Marketing of the Slovenian Tourist Office Some hotels have been bought, take, for example Sawa, the company is known here for its tires and now connected with Goodyear; it has bought some hotels in Bled and renovated them. Slovenian companies see tourism as a good financial investment. And the same goes for the company Elan. 94 per cent of their skis are exported: mainly to Japan and North America. In the factory halls of Begunje near Bled about 500,000 skis are produced each year. In the meantime, the finishing touches are put on the more than 200,000 snowboards in Austria. Elan has not always been so successful. Martin Lehner, Head of Marketing There is an amazing amount of know-how here. People are enthusiastic, everybody is getting ready for the economic upswing of the Slovenian economy. On the other hand, certain deficits can be clearly seen as well. Take, for example, market orientation, it is not only important to produce products professionally but also to be able to implement them successfully. And this is an area where Slovenia still has a lot of catching up to do. Lake, Casino inside/ouside There has been winter tourism in Slovenia since the 19th century. The pitoresque Lake of Bled has attracted noble men and the upper class in search of calmness and relaxation from all over Europe. However, times have changed – now you have to offer more to the guests. There is a casino called “Hit”, which makes eight to ten million euro each year. It has been the only casino in Slovenia that has been able to increase its profits. Quote Peter Sopotnik, Head of Marketing Casino Bled In Slovenia the casino is very important. The turnover of the “Hit” casino is very important for our tourist industry. Landscape The biggest tourist attraction remains the beautiful landscape. The national park of Triglav, founded in 1961, is one of the most unspoilt national parks in Europe – a real paradies for nature lovers: hiking and climbing in the summer, touring skiing in the winter – gentle tourism in harmony with nature. Street, sports store inside/outside In Bled most businessman have realized the new trend. Just as Dusan Podlogar. His sports store has specialized in hiking, trekking and touring skiing and provides for each field the latest equipment from Italy, England and Germany. Dusan himself is a mountain guide and offers tours through the national park. Quote Dusan Podlogar, Manager of Pro Montana Touring skiing is getting more and more popular in Slovenia. People are longing for nature and therefore touring skiing is experiencing an upswing. Many people cannot afford to pay for expensive ski equipment and lift tickets every day. When you go touring skiing the important things is to actively experience nature while exercising. And you don’t have to wait in line at the ski lifts. Slovenia can only profit from this trend that is getting more and more popular. Quote Iztok Altbauer - Head of Marketing Slovenian Tourist Office Anyway, when Slovenia will join the EU, Slovenia’s name will be more present and we also hope that investment in winter tourism and tourism in general from abraod will increase. At the moment we do not have many foreigners who invest in Slovenia and we think that this would be a great opportunity. Landscape/Skier Slovenia looks first and foremost towards the west - where Slavko Avsenik’s original Oberkrainer has been successful for years promoting Slovenia. Landscape/Skier MUSIC .
