TAYLOR'sTravels in Kurdistan. 21 honesty of the African character, seem to have been displayed here to a greater degree than anywhere else during the journey, and eventually the Baron and his party were obliged to leave (after wasting a large amount of property in presents), without being able to effect the objects of the journey. The nearest they could get was about 15 miles from the summit, and an altitude of 4867 feet: but they made numerous observations, sufficient to enable Mr. Thornton to sketch a tolerably accurate map of the group of mountains. The top of Kilima-ndjaro,from this side, appeared as a broad dome with a rugged, blunt peak on its north-west side of nearly the same height as the summit and sloping away gently for a long distance; behind the eastern slope rose the very ragged peaked top of the east peak. The snow showed beautifully on all these summits. The principal top had a good thick, smooth, coating of snow, with patches and streaks lower down, lying in ravines. Mr. Thornton calculated the height to be 22,814 feet. The Jagga range of mountains on the southern slopes were covered with dense sombre forests; their line of summits is somewhat regular and defined, but cut through by many deep ravines and narrow valleys. The Madjame side of the cone was very steep, and Mr. Thornton saw three snow-slipsor avalanches gliding down the slope and creating clouds of snow-dust; but he saw nothing like a glacier. The rocks observed on the lower hills were vesicular, semiporphyriticlavas and other lavas of a spongy nature, showing the volcanic nature of these elevations. The party left Madjame by stealth in the dead of the night of the 4th September, to escape being plundered by the chief, and, after a long detour to the south, arrived at Mombas on the 10th of October. III.-Travels in Kurdistan, with Notices of the Sources of the Eastern and WesternTigris, and Ancient Ruins in their Neigh- bourhood. By J. G. TAYLOR, Esq., H.B.M.'s Consul at Diarbekr. .tead, Jan. 9, 1865. THE information contained in the following paper is the result of three journeys which I made in 1861-63, with the sanction of Her Majesty's Government, in the consular district of Diarbekr, the capital of the modernPashalik of Kurdistan, and the seat of its Mushir or Governor-General. Originally undertakenfor the pur- pose of obtaining reliable commercial and statistical data, I did not, nevertheless, neglect to note everything of geographical or his- torical interest, which either the reports of the natives or ancient authors had brought to my notice. Much of this interesting country-particularly the more moun- tainous part-remains still unexplored; but I trust at some future time to be able to complete a workwhich, under the circumstances, is at present unavoidably defective. The province of Kurdistan, as it now exists, contains a great portion of the fourth Armenia, the whole of Arzanene, Zabdicene and Gordyena or Cordouene, and Northern Mesopotamia. With the exception of the latter, the general features of this tract are high mountains, enclosing fertile valleys, and an undulatingupland, bounded on the east by the Tigris, and intersected at several points by numerous streams, having their rise in the mountainous dis- tricts of the Pashalik, and emptying themselves into that river. The scenery in the highlands yields to no other portions of Turkey for variety and romantic beauty, while the banks of the numerous rivers and streams flow through charming landscapes and thickly wooded valleys, bathing in their course the bases of castles and towns famous in profane and ecclesiasticalhistory.

SPINOZA The following pages are the outcome of several prolonged visits to Constantinople, Macedonia, and Asiatic Turkey, covering a period of twelve years, from 1896 to 1908. Several of these were made under exceptional circumstances and embody experiences such as do not often fall to the lot of a traveller, some of which, I venture to think, are of lasting public interest. Anyone who has had personal relations with an autocrat—in this case the spiritual head of a faith in which in the course of centuries thousands of millions of human beings have lived and died—ought to have much to tell worth recounting. There were also the surroundings of the Monarch to be observed. Many a trait of deep human interest presented itself to him who was a privileged visitor: for instance, the ups and downs of fortune as they affected the all- powerful favourite whose good offices-as in the time of a Madame de Pompadour—powerful Sovereigns did not think it beneath their dignity to strive and compete for.

John’s purpose is to explain God’s dispensation in human history. He offers theological instruction through the medium of historical narrative. Chapter one discusses John’s political and ecclesiastical context. The fifteenth book of Resh Melle illustrates historical events which were contemporary to John. This chapter also discusses the rise of Islam, which had a great impact on the monastic centres and the numerous communities that formed the Church of the East. Chapter two investigates the life, literary works, and importance of the author. The works that have been traditionally attributed to John are discussed and their authenticity assessed. The chapter also discusses John’s importance for modern scholarship in various fields of study, including history, theology, exegesis, liturgy, and asceticism. Chapter three discusses the title, provenance, sources, manuscripts, editions and translations of Resh Melle.

  • KURİKİ HÖYÜK, a SMALL SETTLEMENT at the CONFLUENCE of the BATMAN and TIGRIS RIVERS Evidence from the Late Iron Age to the Parthian Period
Anatolica XLIV, 2018, 1-42. doi: 10.2143/ANA.44.0.3285049 KURİKİ HÖYÜK, A SMALL SETTLEMENT AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE BATMAN AND TIGRIS RIVERS Evidence from the Late Iron Age to the Parthian period Anacleto D’Agostino and Elif Genç* Abstract This paper concerns the results of two seasons of work at Kuriki Höyük on the left bank of Batman Çayı, in SE Turkey. Architecture and materials provide information on a little known period in the region, comprising the second half of first millennium BC to the first centuries of Common Era. Focusing on pottery sherds, a few objects and architectural remains, contextual analysis enable us to define aspects of the local material culture, main phases of occupation at the site and the regional links. On the whole, more attention has been paid to interpreting all the evidence collected, although fragmentary, framing it within a general chronological grid, and summarising the main historical events that could have had consequences on the sequence of occupation. The site and its sequence The site of Kuriki Höyük (37°47’28.6”N 41°00’45.8”E) is located on a terrace on the eastern bank of the Batman Çayı in close proximity to its confluence with the Tigris river, approximately 1 km from the village of Oymataş (Fig. 1). This terrace flanks the Batman Çayı and becomes wider at the confluence with the Tigris. It rises few meters above the river flood- plain, is delimited by hills to the north and by a steep rock slope rising to the south-east.

  • Frontier Land and Rural Settlement in the Upper Tigris River Valley (South-Eastern Turkey) from Roman to Byzantine Age (Second-Sixth Centuries AD)
Frontier land and rural settlement in the upper Tigris river valley (south-eastern Turkey) from Roman to Byzantine age (second-sixth centuries AD) RODOLFO BRANCATO Department of Humanistic Studies, Catania University Abstract Southeastern Anatolia was one of the regions in which the Roman and Eastern empires fought for centuries for supremacy. In the fourth century CE, the Roman/Sasanian border shifted from the Euphrates River to the Tigris River: the upper Tigris River valley was thus embedded in the Eastern Roman frontier between the Roman and Sasanian empires. Changes in settlement patterns during the Late Antique period seem to confirm the limit of Roman control to the area West of the Batman River, one of the tributaries of the Tigris River in its upper course. The integration of new and legacy archaeological data available for this borderland may help in better understanding of local rural landscape and enable an analysis of the relationship between imperialism and the organization of borderlands.
