Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Key words: Flora, Phytogeography, Taxonomy, Tuscan Maremma. Introduction Inhabited by man since millennia and cradle of the Etruscan civilization, Maremma is a historical region of central-western Italy that stretches, in its broadest sense, from south- ern Tuscany to northern Latium in the provinces of Pisa, Livorno, Grosseto and Viterbo.

AREA ARCHEOLOGICA DI VETULONIA GROSSETO E LA PIANURA - CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA Vetulonia, Loc. Poggiarello Renzetti e Via Case di Siena - Castiglione della Pescaia the museum Vetulonia and its territory Today Vetulonia is a small village overlooking the Grosseto plain, which in Etruscan times was occupied by Lake Prile, a large lagoon communicating with the sea, on the opposite side of which was the Etruscan city of Roselle. The exact site of this ancient Etruscan city is a fairly recent discovery, the result of excavations carried out in the 19th century by Isidoro Falchi, a local doctor and amateur archaeologist, which led to the identification of the ancient city of Vetulonia with the village of Colonna di Buriano. Thus, after almost six centuries, the Royal Decree of 1887 restored to the place its rightful ancient name of Vetulonia. All we know of the earliest Villanovan (9th-8th century BC) phase are the necropolises with well tombs containing cinerary urns; between the end of the 9th and the beginning of the 8th century BC, the well tombs were enclosed within large stone circles, and the first trench or “fossa” tombs appeared, reflecting a gradual change in funereal ideology: the transition from cremation to inhumation In the late Orientalising period, starting from the last decades of the 8th century BC, the dominant form of burial was in trench tombs, set within circles of white stone and covered with mounds of earth. These have yielded very rich grave goods, comprising jewellery and pottery imported from the Eastern Mediterranean and sophisticated products of local metal-working.

She discovered the Maremma Tuscany as an English teacher in 2007. A sixth-month vacation became a lifelong love affair after she met her husband, a born-and-bred Maremmano. Now living in Manciano, Elisa discovers something new to love about the Maremma every day. She is still astounded by the pure beauty of the Parco della Maremma and infatuated with the quiet charm of Montemerano. She adores the humble grace of even the smallest festival and is constantly disarmed by the local hospitality. But it’s the little things that capture her imagination. The tiny differences that set every town and city apart from its neighbour. The infinitesimal elements that make discovering every town almost like discovering another world. It’s these differences that make the Maremma impossible to forget and impossible to tire of. This guidebook wouldn’t have been possible without the love, support and tireless patience of Giulio Detti, Maria, Elio and Anita Scarton, Gabriella Serafinelli, Fiorenzo Detti and Stefanie Markidis. A thousand thanks. INTRODUCTION The Maremma presses its back to the borders of Southern Tuscany and Lazio like it’s playing a game of hide and seek. It’s quiet, humble and, if you blink, you’ll most certainly miss it.

Untold Italy Episode 79 - Maremma - Exploring Tuscany's undiscovered coast This is the Untold Italy Travel podcast, and you're listening to episode number 79. Ciao a tutti and Benvenuti to Untold Italy, the travel podcast, where you go to the towns and villages, mountains and lakes, hills and coastlines of Bella italia. Each week your host Katy Clarke takes you on a journey in search of magical landscapes of history, culture, wine, gelato, and, of course, a whole lot of pasta. If you're dreaming of Italy and planning future adventures there, you've come to the right place. Ciao a tutti! Hello everyone! I hope all of our friends in the northern hemisphere are enjoying their summer and getting ready for their vacations. This year seems so much more hopeful than last year with restrictions easing so no doubt it’s going to be lots of fun. In Italy, summer means one thing - the beach! And of course there are miles and miles of coastline to enjoy - 7500 kilometers of coastline in fact - so that’s about 4,660 miles I think. And around half of that is beaches, the rest being rocky cliffs. So it’s unsurprising that with so much coastline, Italians love visiting the sea during their summer vacation and enjoying some time on the beach. But what is surprising is that most visitors from outside Europe dont really see much of the coast at all. Most visitors stick to Venice, the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre or maybe Sicily, Puglia and Sardinia and if they are clever, Calabria.
