While we praise the Lord for all the wonders of His power, tvisdom and love, displayed in a system which is to wax old and perish, loe may therein contemplate, as in a glass, those new heavens and that new earth of whose duration there shall be no end. The sun, that fountain of life and heart of the world, the moon shining unth a lustre borrowed from his beams, the stars glittering by night in the clear firmament, the air giving health to all things that live and move, the rain and the dew descending from above, the how which compasseth the heavens about with a circle of glory, the voice of thunder and the piercing power of lightning — all these are ready to instruct us in the mysteries of faith. They speak their Maker as they can. But want and ask the tongue of man. (Bishop Horne, 1771.) 20P3101 PHEI^ ACE I DESIRE to state at the outset what is, and what is not, to be expected from this book. My main purpose is to present a reproduction of thirty-two studies made by me in oil - colours of very important scenes in the Holy Land. These illustrate the record of my journey to many of the most sacred places in the world. The description is arranged according to the route taken in my journey. The geographical order of the places is in this wise : — Joppa — Ajalon — Jerusalem — Bethlehem — Jordan — Jericho — Bethel — Shiloh — Shechem — Samaria — Dothan -- Esdraelon — Jezreel — Tabor — Nazareth — Cana — Gennesareth — Tiberias. It will be seen, then, that the descriptive survey com- prises a part only of the Holy Land, though the most vi PREFACE. important part. It does not include the southern division of Hebron and Gaza, nor the northern division of CiBsarea Philippi and Merom, nor the coast of Tyre and Sidon. It does not extend to the region east of the Jordan. The record includes a general account of my journey, and fully explains the coloured sketches which I took on the spot. The affording of such explanation is indeed the primary object. But, in order that the explanation may be complete for each illustration, a resume is given of the Scriptural events relating to the scene which is depicted. The narrative, then, is so arranged as to set forth the subjects which are pictorially represented. Thus the purpose of the work is strictly limited to the representation of many important scenes as they appear at this time, and to the exposition of the sacred topography or history relating to them. I do not undertake to do any more than this in a matter which has been, and is being, investigated by the most recent authorities. But even this will be found hard of accomplishment. No pains have been spared to verify the authorities, and to embody the results of the latest researches so far as they concern the particular points which I adduce. I duly remember that Picturesque Palestine has of — PREFACE. vii late been most ably and fully delineated by wood - cuts and steel engravings. But these illustrations do not, of course, go beyond the exhibition of form with light and shade. Now my illustrations attempt something more, or something different, in that they display colouring. Such a task has not usually been undertaken by previous illustrators, and has something of novelty in it. Some passages in Ruskin's writings are so specially ap- plicable to colouring in sacred scenery that I will cite them here : " Of all God's gifts to the sight of man, colour is the holiest, the most divine, the most solemn. We speak I'ashly of gay colour and sad colour, for colour cannot at once be good and gay. All good colour is in some degree pensive, the loveliest is melancholy. God has employed colour in His creation as the unvarying accompaniment of all that is purest, most innocent, most precious ; while, for things pre- cious only in material uses, or dangerous, common colours are reserved. ... I know no law more severely without exception than this of the connection of pure colour with profound and noble thought. The ascertainment of the sanctity of colour is not left to human sagacity. The sacred chord of colour, blue, purple, and scarlet, with viii PREFACE. white and gold, as appointed in the Tabernacle, this chord is the fixed base of all colouring with the workmen of every great age. ...     T HE L EAFLET --- April 2018 Other news Whilst visiting Canberra in January, Jenny and Wallace Young The Leaflet made a trip across to Rosedale (Bateman’s Bay) to see Anne Coutts. Her late husband, Laurence, was Assistant Minister at No. 1069 Scots’ Church from 1994-96, and many members have fond April 2018 memories of their time amongst us. Late last year Anne had major surgery, but is well on the way to recovery, and sends her greetings to all. Anne Coutts with her rescue dog Charlie William Mackie, grandson of Gordon and Lois Taylor, has recently completed a major project for his Australian Scout Medallion (pictured). William will travel to Sydney in August for the presentation of the award, the highest in Scouting. Well done William! William Mackie with his Australian Scout Medallion project Welcome back to all those who have had holidays in Australia or further afield in recent weeks. As each edition of The Leaflet goes to print we are aware that some of our members are suffering from illness, both in their immediate families or amongst close friends.     Three Conquests of Canaan

    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

ITTLE explanation is required of the arrangement followed in this Volume, beyond calling L attention to the division of this Volume into two parts: the first forms a combined Index to the three Volumes of the Memoirs, the Special Papers, the Jerusalem Volume, the Flora and Fauna of Palestine, and the Geological Survey; and the second is an Index to the Arabic and English Name Lists. This division was considered advisable in order to avoid the continual use of reference letters to the Name Lists, which would otherwise have been required. The large number of entries rendered it absolutely necessary to make them as brief as possible; but it is hoped that it will be found that perspicuity has not been sacrificed to brevity. A full explanation of the reference letters used will be found on the first page. The short Hebrew Index at the end of the Volume has been kindly furnished by Dr. W. Aldis Wright. H. C. S.     NORTH SYRIAN MORTARIA1 (PLATE 73) C LAY mortaria,such a typicalfeature of Romansites in the West (Gaul,Ger- manyand Britain),are not at all commonamong the findsfrom Romanisites in the EasternMediterranean. Here they had been widelyused in Classicaland Hellenistictimes,2 but during the Roman period they seem to havebeen almost entirely supplantedfor culinarypurposes by vesselsof stoneand marble.3 Despite this general trend,however, there exists one classof claymortaria which circulated widely in the East duringthe thirdand early fourth centuries after Christ;this formsthe material for the presentarticle. Amongthe cataloguedfinds from the AthenianAgora excavationsare several piecesof largecoarse mortaria in a distinctivedark brown ware, clearly not of local manufacture.One of these (P 20013) is preservedin a relativelycomplete state (Fig. 1, P1.73, a-b). All sharethe samebasic form: flat base, high flaringwall, and broadslightly downturned rimn (to facilitatehandling) furnished with a shortshallow spout. The averageoverall diameter is about50 cm. On the inside,the floorcurves smoothlyinto the wall; in somecases a smallgroove is presentjust belowthe rim. All are stampedon the rim with the maker'sname or trademarkin Greek,generally consistingof two lines of impressedcharacters within a rectangularframe. In one casethe stampis repeatedat intervalsround the rim;this mayalso have been the case on someof the otherswhich are less well preserved.The wallsare unusuallythick, and the weightof the vesselswhen complete must have been considerable;that of the best-preservedexample may be estimatedat ca. 1112 kg. Most are hard-fired, as befitstheir function,the clay assuminga distinctivedeep chocolate brown color. An orangeor orange-browncolor, with a tendencyto a darkercore, also occurs. Surfacesappear to have beenwet-smoothed.

    247 LIEUTEN A.NT CONDER'S REPORTS. V. THE LAND OF BENJAMIN. G!BEON, 1st July, 1881. TAKING advantage of the delay occasioned by circumstances already referred to, we have revisited one of the first districts surveyed by the party employed in 1872, while under care of Mr. Tyrwhitt Drake, before my arrival in Palestine. The chief points of interest include the questions of Rimmon and Ai ; the vicinity of Gibeon and the battle of Ajalon ; and the ruins of Tellilia, and Deir esh Shebll.b, with some traditions connected with Tell 'Asftr, and el Jib, &c. The general result of our re-examination is satisfactory, insomuch as the nomenclature of the Map has been tested in many places, and found correct; while scarcely any ruins of even the least importance are found to be omitted ; all the really ancient sites and buildings having been plotted and described. This is specially satisfactory, inasmuch as the district is one of the most difficult to survey, on account of the rugged­ ness of the hills and the great depth of the valleys, while it was also one which was undertaken while the party were still new to the work, and unfamiliar with the archrnology of the country. The Rock Rimmon.-Until the year 1819, it was generally agreed that this site, in the wilderness (J udg. xx, 47) where the six hundred Ben­ jamites lived for four months after their defeat at Geba of Benjamin (Judg. xx, 10 and 33) was to be recognised at the ancient village of Rumm6n, on the edge of the cultivated hill-country, overlooking the desert ranges, above the Jordan valley.

    THE FIRST BOOK OF MACCABEES INTRODUCTION THE English Bible, as is well known, originally contained but two so-called Books of the Maccabees. ere are, however, three such books found in the Septuagint, and a fourth bearing the same title in connection with the works of Josephus. ese are all the Books of the Maccabees now existing in Greek. A work, sometimes called the Fih Book of Maccabees, is extant in an Arabic version, which is also known under the title, Historia Maccabœorum Arabica. Only the first two books actually treat of the Mac- cabæan family and their heroic efforts to free their native land from the Syrian yoke. e order in which these several works are usually enumerated is also that of their actual worth. e second book takes up the history at a point a lile earlier than the first (B.C. 176), but covers a period of only fourteen years. e first begins with the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes (B.C. 175), and closes with the death of the high priest Simon (B.C. 135), so including a space of forty years. e third book narrates the history of events which took place before the Maccabæan family appeared on the stage (B.C. 221–204). e fourth makes use of an incident or two found in the second book, the martyrdom of Eleazar with that of the seven brothers and their mother, introduced by an account of the aempt of Apollonius (Heliodorus) to rob the temple, in order to connect with it a philosophical disquisition on the Rule of Reason (Αὐτοκράτορος λογισμοῦ), or the supremacy of the ὄρθος λόγος over the πάθη.
