Without him keeping me on track and gently prodding me in the right direction, carrying out the analysis would undoubtedly have been an overwhelming task. I am also grateful to Iver B. Neumann, who has read through and given valuable comments on a draft in the finishing stages of the process. I would also like to thank Prof. Jeffrey T. Checkel for an excellent introduction to social constructivism in International Relations, Prof. Werner Christie Mathisen for his course on textual analysis, and Sunniva Engh for introducing me to Norwegian development aid history. You have all inspired me in the choice of perspective and object of study. Writing this thesis would not be possible without support and encouragement to overcome the many small and big challenges I have encountered. I am indebted to my fellow students, particularly Jonathan Amario and Ruben Røsler; my friends; and my parents. Last, but not least, Synnøve deserves my most heartfelt thanks for her patience and loving support. All the viewpoints presented, and all errors and inconsistencies, are solely my own responsibility. First, I am grateful to the University of Tromsø that opened my path to an international academic milieu by admitting me to the Indigenous Master Programme where I met my classmates from all over the world, Saami professors with personal experience in the indigenous self-determination movement, and other researchers on indigenous issues. Moreover, the Centre for Sámi Studies played an active role in my educational process, by organising seminars (at Skibotn) and conferences (the Forum for Development Cooperation with Indigenous Studies), trips to Finnmark (Karasjok, Kautokeino, Alta) and to Kåfjord (Manndalen) and finally, funding my research project. My gratitude goes as well to the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen) and the Centre for Environment and Development (SEMUT) for their financial support that made this research possible. My greatest gratitude and thanks go to my supervisor Bjørn Bjerkli, Associate Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology at the Tromsø University, who devoted a great deal of his time reading and commenting on my work.

We have tried to make it more userfriendly by harmonising variable names in the codebook and data-set; by harmonising the treatment of missing values across the different national studies; and by adding a number of constructed variables that were found to be useful in previous work with the data. All changes that were made from version 1 to version 2 of codebook and dataset are documented in a voluminous appendix composed by Sascha Adam who was also in charge of implementing the changes in both dataset and documentation.
