In a brief article of 1993, Lucian Boia outlined the destinies of some Western models which had come in contact with the Romanian culture; a Belgian model, seen as an appendage of the French, an English one, which in his opinion was completely marginal, and others that enjoyed a more or less brilliant fate (German, Italian, etc.) 1. Please note that each of the topics mentioned above enjoyed special attention in Romanian historiography; see for instance the studies authored by Aurel Filimon, Gheorghe Platon and even my own, dedicated to the Romanian- Belgian relations; those by Dan Berindei, Pompiliu Eliade, Nicolae Iorga and Nicolae Isar for the French case; those by Zigu Ornea regarding the German influences on the political and literary thought of the Junimea group; those by Eugen Denize and George L ăzărescu, on the cultural and political interferences between Italy and Romania, etc. -

Transylvanian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research in Humanities Theodor Aman in the Sion Donation Roxana BĂLĂUCĂ Lucian Blaga Central University Library, Cluj Keywords: engravings, Theodor Aman, Gheorghe Sion donation of the Lucian Blaga Central University Library Abstract The paper presents the engravings made by Theodor Aman, a 19th century Romanian artist, preserved in the Special Collections Department of the Lucian Blaga Central University Library, donated by Gheorghe Sion to the institution in 1923. Theodor Aman, who learned the various techniques of engraving in Paris, was mainly interested in Romanian history and traditions, representing in his works prominent historical figures, scenes from national history, characteristic Romanian customs and figures. A pioneer of Romanian graphic art he elevated the art of engraving to the rank of art in Romania. E-mail: [email protected] * The Lucian Blaga Central University Library holds in the Special Collections Department a great number of engravings1 either received as donations or purchased by the Library. There are 8897 such documents in our institution. This valuable collection was based on the donation made by Gheorghe Sion in 1923. Besides the considerable number of books, manuscripts, maps, and coins he donated to the Library approximately 2500 engravings. The brothers Iuliu and Liviu Martian also contributed to the enrichment of this collection. Gheorghe Sion was preoccupied especially with collecting all types of documents connected to the Romanian countries, as well as to the Romanian territories under a foreign rule. Thus, during his travels abroad, he gathered a large number of documents referring to the Romanian provinces.2 In this way an impressive collection of engravings 1 General denomination of works imprinted by different processes. -

SESSION ABSTRACTS Session 1. Cultural and Sensorial Experiences of the Railway Journey Doru RADOSAV (Romania: Professor, Faculty of History and Philosophy, “Babeș-Bolyai” University, Cluj-Napoca): The Railway Station - Lieux de mémoire: Encounters, Farewells, Memories. A Historical Semantics Approach . Radu MÂRZA (Romania: Associate professor, Faculty of History and Philosophy, “Babeș- Bolyai” University, Cluj-Napoca) Romanian Train Travelers Discover Landscape “To Franzensbad, the train passes through a land of no beauty, barren and poor”. The quotation comes from a travel account to Franzensbad and Karlsbad, published in 1901. Many similar ones exist. They drew my attention to the fact that in 1900 a passenger could spend many hours at the train window, looking out heedlessly or carefully observing the landscape passing before his eyes. The traveler's concern for the landscape and nature he is crossing is recent. Until the 18th century and especially during the first half of the 19th century, travelers did not place much value on them. From the sources they have left us, travelers do not seem to be very concerned about the beauty (or lack of beauty) of the landscape. However, during the Enlightenment, and even more so during Romanticism, they discover nature and landscape and they associate symbolic values to them. The development of the railways also brings about a new relation between traveler and nature. The train runs through the wild nature, but the journey is fast and convenient. The traveler no longer makes an effort in going through nature, but rather looks at it comfortably from the window of the train. Sometimes he is observing it, sometimes not, sometimes he is observing the people and their settlements, villages, plants or train stations, or even the passengers aboard the train. -

The paper aims to show that O sută de ani de zile la Porţile Orientului [One Hundred Years at the Gates of the East], Ioan Groşan’s historical picaresque postmodern novel, can be seen – due the presence of different techniques and devices of humour – as a weapon in and against a totalitarian system . In order to do so, our approach takes into account the problem of an East European totalitarian system, the East–West antipode, the condition of the author and his possible intention in a totalitarian system, the condition of the reader and his horizon of expectations in the same system, and the sources of humour used by the author . Humour as a weapon can have a lot of roles, for example, cracking, evading, or surmounting reality, and we want to show that Ioan Groşan succeeds in doing all that. In our paper, we grouped the humour-generating incongruences and contradictions into several categories: composition, frame (space and time, situations), identity (social status, names, physical appearance, ethnic and religious belonging), and language to underline the wide range of tools used by the author . Keywords: Ioan Groşan, totalitarian system, Postmodernism, humour 1. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes. -
