The Collapse of a Pastoral Economy
his research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and 15 Göttingen Series in Tnorthern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds Social and Cultural Anthropology from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general Samwel Shanga Mhajida trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by The Collapse of a Pastoral Economy the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? The Datoga of Central and Northern Tanzania Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled from the 1830s to the 2000s through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the “Datoga problem,” but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control. -

INSTITUTIONAL DETERMINANTS OF FOOD SECURITY IN TANZANIA: A CASE STUDY OF SINGIDA REGION BY HAMIS ALLY KINGU A THESIS SUBMITTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY OF SOKOINE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE. MOROGORO, TANZANIA. 2015 ii ABSTRACT Food insecurity is relatively high in Singida Region although there has been an influx of development related institutions, some of which deal with food security. The extent to which the two were linked was empirically unknown. Therefore, the research for this thesis was conducted in Iramba and Singida Districts of Singida Region to determine the role of institutions in improving food security. The specific objectives were to: (i) to appraise qualitatively the role of institutions in food security (ii) identify institutions dealing with food security and their key functions, (iii) determine food security at the household level, and (iv) establish linkages between some institutional factors and food security factors. The main indicator of food security was dietary energy consumed per adult equivalent per day, measured in kCal. Data were collected among 240 households between November 2010 and July 2011, mainly through a household questionnaire. It was found that there were various institutions; including Government departments, NGOs, CBOs and international organisations including FAO; which were related to agriculture and food security by providing support in terms of training communities on agriculture, supply of agricultural inputs, agricultural credit provision and construction of infrastructure. Food security status at the household level in the two districts was 2 179.86 kCal per adult equivalent per day as opposed to the national caloric poverty line that is 2 200 kCal per adult equivalent per day. -

MKALAMA DISTRICT COUNCIL DISTRICT COUNCIL HEALTH PROFILE …...tame FOREWORD The District Health Profile (DHP) offers insight into district health conditions by assessing priority health indicators that reflect the district health status of the population, status of health systems, and status of health service delivery. The DHP also tracks the progress in the district and highlights some of the challenges and successes the district has encountered. The DHP offers information through a reliable and transparent platform. It allows district health officials to monitor priority disease trends and adequately target relevant interventions. It helps the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children to determine what policies are needed to support work in the district, and in turn how to allocate resources to district efforts. It educates and empowers district health workers and in turn the community they serve. The District Health Profile (DHP) is a like mirror that enables the District to know what is prevailing in the area, its causes and what measures can be taken to grab the problems. The profile also allows the District to budget and allocate the resources based on the magnitude of the problem or disease. DHP is an essential tool for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of programs and knowing the impact of health interventions. Through observing the trend of diseases covered in this DHP document, it will be easy to note the success and failure of the efforts ever tried to alleviate or control the problems prevailing in the entire community. It is our expectation that planning of health related interventions for the control of diseases as well as health problems other than diseases in Mkalama DC this tool will be used at all levels starting with the community up to Council level. -
Mkalama District Council Profile
MKALAMA DISTRICT COUNCIL PROFILE 2.1 Introduction Mkalama District Council was established in July, 2012. This is one of the newly established councils which are in line with the Government commitment of ensuring that provision of goods and services is brought closer to the beneficiaries, i.e. local people. Mkalama District Council was therefore born after having divided the former Iramba District Council into two independent Councils namely Mkalama and Iramba District Councils. 2.2 Location (Geographical setting) Mkalama District Council is one among six councils forming Singida Region namely Singida District Council, Manyoni District Council and Singida Municipal Council, Iramba District Council and Ikungi District Council. Mkalama is situated in the North of the region between latitudes 4o and 4.30o south of the Equator and longitudes 34o and 35o east of Greenwich Meridian. The district is divided into three major zones, the eastern low land and the central – lowlands. The central zone is covered with hills and plateau with an altitude of 1,000m to 1,500m above sea level, with sandy loam soils. The eastern zone comprises at lowlands along the Great Rift Valley with scattered hills with red, black and sandy loam soils. It mounts an altitude of 1,000m to 1,500m above sea level. Mkalama District Council covers an area of 3,365.51\ square Kilometers of which 44% is arable land. 2.3 Climate Despite the variation of climatic conditions throughout the year, the weather is attractive because of its low altitude. Most of Mkalama area receives early rainfall. This is between 500mm - 850mm per annum. -

Tell. 026-2502089 Singida Tanzania, August, 2016. www.singida.go.tz i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Regional Investment Profiles cover a wide range of statistics and information on geography, population, economic parameters, economic infrastructure and the productive sector. Such information is important to policy makers, planners, researchers, investors, donors and functional managers. This summary therefore, provides information on the existing economic strength status of exploitation, challenges and possible investment opportunities. Economically, the Region depends on agriculture as the major source of income and food security. Other sectors include livestock, beekeeping, commerce, manufacturing, mining and services. Major crops grown include sorghum, sunflower, onion, cotton, legumes, cassava and sweet potatoes. Production is predominantly under small scale. The Region is endowed with various types of mineral deposits scattered in 46 different areas and categorised into six groups. The six groups and the associated minerals in each group are Metallic Minerals (eg. Gold, Copper ore, Iron Ore, Titanium), Energy (uranium), Germstones (Zircon, quarts, amethyst, amethyst and garnets’), Kimberlitic Diamonds, Industrial (Gypsum salt and red soil and Building materials (Rocks, gravel, sand and murram) Out of 46 mineral deposits only seven areas are under small scale mining. Two bring mining companies are finalizing preparations for stabling major gold mines. Livestock in the Region include cattle, goats, sheep and chicken. In the recent years production of honey and bees wax has increased and has high potential growth. The industrial sector is dominated by Sunflower processing industries. -

Huria Journal vol. 27 (1), March 2020 Assessment of Beekeeping as an Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change in Iramba District Ziwa Elia Yohana1 and Josephat Saria2 [email protected], [email protected] The Open University of Tanzania ABSTRACT: The effects of climate change in Tanzania affect rain fed agriculture and reduce the productivity in most parts of Tanzania. Indigenous knowledge and different agricultural strategies, on how to diversify to other agricultural activity like beekeeping has been adopted by different communities in Tanzania, especially in semi-arid areas. This paper focuses on assessing potentials of beekeeping as an adaptation strategy against impacts of climate change in Iramba District. The research used different methods in collecting information such as key informants’ interviews, focus group discussions and observation methods. Secondary data were collected through documentary review, while the questionnaire was administered to 150 heads of households from four villages namely: Kyalosangi, Galangala, Mdonkolo and Songambele. The results show that over a period of 30 years, about 77% of respondents reported decrease in maize and 78% decrease in sunflower productivity. In interviews, the respondents indicated that they have shifted to beekeeping which contributes more to household’s income than land tilling which is rain-fed. This is supported by 33.1% who were attracted in beekeeping for income purposes. The average honey production per hive ranges from 10 – 15 Lts/hive in top bar hives and frame hives, while traditional hives ranges between 5 – 10 Lts/hive. This study therefore recommends provision of appropriate capacity building and financial support to beekeepers in order to optimize production of bee products in the study area. -

Box 42 SINGIDA Mobile No. 0737-219611 2015 1 CHAPTER ONE Land, Climate, Agro-Ecological Zones and People 1.0: An overview Ikungi is a newly formed district council established on 8th March 2013 through Government gazette no 87 under section 8 and 9 of the Local Government (District Authorities) Act No. 8 and 9 of 1982 under the Ministerial establishment order and certification of establishment issued by the clerk of the National Assembly on 3rd May 2013. The council was formerly under Singida District council and come into effective operations in July 2013. It is one of the six councils within Singida Region. The other councils are Singida Municipal, Iramba District Council, Mkalama District Council, Singida District Council and Manyoni District Council. 1.1: Geographical Location The District lies between 40and 60Latitudes South of the Equator and 340 and 350 Longitudes East of Greenwich. It is bordered by Tabora (Uyui DC) to the West, Singida Municipal to the North, Singida District to the North-East, Iramba District to the North – West, Chemba and Kondoa to the South – East and Manyoni District to the South. 1.2: Land Area, Land Use Pattern and Administrative Units Ikungi District Council covers a total area of about 8,860 square km. under the following distribution; Agricultural land covers 2,580 km2; Grazing land is 2,887 km2; Forests and shrubs covers 1,815 km2, Water in the form of dams and rivers totals 13 km2 and others 48.3km2.
